MK Dichter has sponsored a Bill in the Knesset which aims to deprive Arabic as one of the two official languages in Israel on the grounds that Israel should be a Jewish State. The logic by implication is that the rights of the Israeli Arabs as enshrined in the Declaration of Independence by Ben Gurion in 1948 is superseded by this Bill.

Archbishop of Canterbury in Zimbabwe

Dr Williams has performed a huge "Mitzvah" by having the courage to confront Robert Mugabe on his own turf and point out on behalf of all the Zimbabwe Anglicans how they have been downtrodden and worse by the despotic regime which Mugabe heads. This was an incredibly noble and courageous act which fully justifies his election to high office in the Anglican Church.

Vera's draw 2-2 against AC Camden in Cup

Conditions today were much more suitable for soccer in England with temperatures about 17 C and the ground softened by rain last night (thankfully this prevented some injuries). Vera's went into the lead with a goal by man of the match Ollie Jones, But AC Camden recovered well and scored an equaliser before half time.

In 27 C heat and despite wanting to finish in time to watch the Arsenal Spurs game, Vera's proved again how dangerous they can be when top goal scorer Johny Erdman (no relation to his father who is writing this) scored another two goals as Vera's won 2-0.

Palestinians land body blow to Bibi

Bibi is rushing to New York to speak personally to the UN General Assembly. So far he has been totally outfoxed by the Palestinian Authority, and Mr Abbas prsonally has shown real leadership which has been much appreciated by the majority of the Palestinians. Even Hamas have been left out in the cold and marginalised.

Vera's win second league game

Veras came from 2-1 down to win 3-2 against AC Harpo at Home in their second league game of the season (Camden Musicians League). Jonny Erdman scored a hat trick and his first goal was a scorcher from 30 yards out. He was voted man of the match by player manager Jonny Erdman.

Vera Lynns win 2-1

Yesterday afternoon at Regents Park, the Vera Lynns won a good game against the Ultramarines in a game played under windy conditions. Player Manager Jonny Erdman scored an equaliser and Richard Mansell scored the winning goal in the second half. The wind favoured Ultramarines in the first half and they played very well particularly in midfield.

Yisrael Beiteinu attacks NGOs in Israel

Meretz UK notes with alarm the recent vote in the Knesset to investigate funding of Israeli NGOs on the grounds that they may be harming the IDF. This motion was sponsored by Yisrael Beitenu led by Avigdor Lieberman the current Foreign Minister of Israel. Many have called on Prime Minister Netanyahu to sack Lieberman from this post as he is regarded as a loose cannon and the Prime Minister's office is often issuing qualifying statements after one of Lieberman's non-diplomatic outbursts.

Chaim "Jumes" Oron resigns from the Knesset

Chaim Oron has announced his resignation from the Knesset after over twenty years service originally in Mapam and now Meretz. After Yossi Beilin stood down, Jumes was elected leader of Meretz and he has made a strong and determined contribution in opposition to the extreme right wing government led by Netanyahu. Zehava Galon will be taking her place as a Meretz M.K. and I wish her every success for the rest of the term of this Knesset.

Lunch in Jaffa

Today friends invited us to join them for lunch in Jaffa at a Christian Arab restaurant in the old part of town. It was wonderful to experience co-existence between Jews, Arabs (Christians and Muslims), in this very interesting town to the south of Tel Aviv. It is an up and coming area, showing many signs of regeneration whilst still maintaining the historic parts of a very historic place.

Facebook

Although I have been on Facebook for years, it was a fairly passive existence. Then I noticed that there were some marked changes and new developments. Some of my friends remarked that various campaigns were gaining momentum and much greater recognition by the general public by posting new sites on Facebook. Then i also became more aware that in Israel there was a much greater use of Facebook to enhance connectivity amongst young and even middle aged professionals with friends and colleagues.
