WIZO AVIV is embarking on a challenging adventure in Israel in order to raise vital funds for WIZO’s work. The ‘Aviv Challenge’ is a sponsored challenge exclusively for women that takes place in Israel from 25th – 30th April 2010. This unforgettable mission for women aged 30 – 45 will see 20 British volunteers working hands-on for WIZO UK’s flagship project - The Rebecca Sieff WIZO Centre in Jerusalem, a threefold centre that encompasses Europe's largest day care centre, a vocational centre and also provides a refuge for women suffering from domestic violence. The UK team will be taken completely out of their comfort zones with a variety of different tasks – creating a tranquil garden for the women and children in the refuge, developing a separate outside eating and play area, decorating the centre with paintings and murals, and taking on all sorts of other jobs. The team will also take it in turns to work with the youth in the vocational kitchen teaching them traditional English recipes and working in the day care centre running arts and crafts activities. The team have already raised in excess of £35,000 but are planning to raise much more to help WIZO provide essential social welfare services. Follow the blog to see how they get on in Israel and how they help make a difference to the lives of women and children in Israel. Nicky Miller and Emma Yantin AVIV WIZO UK

The Challenge Continues

By WIZO Aviv Challenge, April 29, 2010

We started our day at the Rebecca Sieff Centre visiting the new therapeutic garden that we had spent two days preparing.

We listened to the director of a Wizo Shelter and a social worker told us how the shelter works taking in women who come from abusive marriages where their and their children’s lives are at risk. They come in as an emergency from areas outside the city. They are given legal advice are taught how to overcome their lack of self esteem, and given the tools they need to get their lives back on track.

Day Three In The Beit Heuss – An Emotional Rollercoaster!

By WIZO Aviv Challenge, April 28, 2010

Our first stop was the Phoebe Leon Welcome Centre, a safe haven for over 80 children half of whom are considered at risk at home.

The centre is open from 7am – 7pm, the children aged from 6 months to 6 years are there to receive three nutritious meals a day and are taught how to interact and have loving relationships.

They receive emotional and educational lessons that their parents are unable to give as well as offering them a home away from home. Many of the parents are single parent families, drug users or new immigrants.

Aviv Challenge Day One Draws To A Close

By WIZO Aviv Challenge, April 27, 2010

The day ended in mass hysteria - laughing not crying! We had a fabulous day, achieved so much at the Rebecca Sieff centre and had a great deal of fun together.

We began our day at the RSC as we split into two groups. One went straight to work on the garden painting railings, benches and converted an old slide into a beautiful flower display. As the renovations progressed two children came with their therapists to begin using what will be a tranquil, peaceful garden.

The Aviv Challenge Lands In Israel

By WIZO Aviv Challenge, April 26, 2010

After kissing goodbye our families and loved ones, we landed in Israel during the early hours of Sunday morning and travelled to Beit Heuss in Herzliya Pituach, which would become our base for the next five days. After a few hours sleep, Cheli the director of the hostel explained that Beit Heuss is a unique centre set up in 1967 for people to come for respite and refuge from their everyday lives to help them cope with severe problems they may be facing.

Helen Glaser, President of Worldwide WIZO welcomed us and told us how happy she was to see young women volunteering for WIZO.

By WIZO Aviv Challenge, April 19, 2010

Last night, a group of girls came together to meet at a crowded Orange Tree pub in Totteridge, all taking time out from the televised Election debate to talk about raising money for a worthy cause and the trepidation of going on the WIZO Aviv Challenge – a week’s mission in Israel that starts next week.
