Reform Judaism is living Judaism. It is a religious philosophy rooted in nearly four millennia of Jewish tradition, whilst actively engaged with modern life and thought. This means both an uncompromising assertion of eternal truths and values and an open, positive attitude to new insights and changing circumstances. It is a living, evolving faith that Jews of today and tomorrow can live by.

Rosh Hashanah 5770: A message from Rabbi Bayfield

By reformjudaism, September 18, 2009

Head of the Movement for Reform Judaism, Rabbi Dr. Tony Bayfield shares his reflections on Rosh Hashanah 5770.

It bothers me a lot that we still teach childish notions of faith whilst missing the genuine article.

I never cease to be appalled by how much I read and forget. But some things at least do stay with me. An example comes from a book of short stories called 'In the Reign of Peace' by the American author Hugh Nissenson published forty years ago. When I took it down from the shelf recently, I was reminded that the word shalom is wrongly spelled in Hebrew on the dustcover!

Historic Victory for Jewish Pluralism in Israel

By reformjudaism, May 22, 2009

This week marks a very important moment for Progressive Judaism and the cause of Jewish pluralism in Israel. On Tuesday 19th May the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) won a precedent-setting case in the Israeli Supreme Court which says that the State has to provide equal funding for Reform and Conservative conversion classes.

The case itself may seem inconsequential but the implications are huge. This is the first time that the Court has declared that government funding must be provided to non-Orthodox Jewish religious services in Israel.

Two firsts for Reform Judaism: A Jewish Lord Mayor and a Shabbat service at the Guildhall

By reformjudaism, November 17, 2008

Jewish Lord Mayors are not new in London. Sir David Salomons was the first one in 1855, but it took until last week for the first one from a major Reform Community, West London Synagogue, to aspire to the position of the 681st incumbent. He is Alderman Ian Luder, who took up his post on Friday 8th November.

As West London already boasts as members both the Lord Mayor of Westminster, Louise Hyams and the Leader of Westminster City Council, Simon Milton, the position of the Reform Community in the life of the metropolis is on a firm and acknowledged footing.

Reform Jew to become Lord Mayor of London

By reformjudaism, November 12, 2008

Ian Luder is set to become the first Reform Jew to serve as Lord Mayor of London. He will be the first Jewish Lord Mayor of the century and only the 9th ever since the 1300s.

Alderman Luder will be admitted in a special “Service of Unity” at West London Synagogue at which he will formally become The Lord Mayor, to be held on Friday 7th November. A Shabbat morning service will then be held the next day in the Guildhall for all those Jews participating in the traditional Lord Mayor’s procession through the streets of London, which attracts thousands of well-wishers every year.

Members of Reform and Liberal communities have raised over £30,000 in aid of the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism (IMPJ). Menorah finds a new home

By reformjudaism, November 12, 2008

‘Inspirational… Stunning… Amazing.’ These were just some of the reactions from hundreds of Jewish worshippers attending the first service at the new Menorah Synagogue on Altrincham Road in Sharston, home to Cheshire Reform Congregation.

Menorah Synagogue's new buildingContractors worked day and night to complete the state-of-the-art structure in time for Yom Kippur. Its high pitched roof features clear glass panels that let natural light flood into the central area where services are held, whilst white walls and halogen spotlights complete a truly modern place of worship.
