This is a home-based, solely-owned and run business offering 'virtual' and 'face-to-face' assistance within a full spectrum of office and business services. The 'twist' is that unlike an 'off-the-shelf 'secretary', I am equipped to 'compose' correspondence, reports etc., rather than just offer simple dictation and transcription services, saving potential clients time and energy. Otherwise, I'm a committed member of Sha'arei Shalom North Manchester Reform Synagogue where I have been Secretary for Marriages for almost a decade. 'Comin' 'Ere, Takin' Our Jobs ...'

I had intended attending last week's Jewish Agency-sponsored tax conference in Manchester. But I didn't get there as I couldn't get any sense from staff at the internationally-renowned firm of accountants due to host the event.

I'm rather deaf and simply wanted to check if a microphone would be used. Instead I received a curt response at reception and was twice put through to the wrong person - once in London! - so I decided to give it a miss.

Why Is Jewish 'Abuse' Growing?

If ever the JC made an important innovation it was to encourage the community to give to less 'fashionable', smaller causes.

I had not thought too much about Jewish Women's Aid for some years and was glad to get a nudge in the group's direction this yomtov.

However, I was deeply saddened by the contents of the thank you letter Brian and I received by way of receipt.

Well, of course you can't. The price of kosher (Shabbat) candles being what it is, you could barely afford to light a match.

BBC Radio News has warned that the price of Xmas candles made in China is due to soar just in time for the holiday. It's a shame the bulletin did not add that the kosher variety, imported from Israel, has rocketed by a whopping 55.55% (recurring) as I discovered when I bought a box at a North Manchester deli this week. Yes, a box of '20s' has rocketed from 90p to £1.40 in only a couple of months.

Should MRJ 'Reform' Its Policies?

I am dismayed to learn that the Movement for Reform Judaism intends to close its northern office in Manchester and sack Belinda Copitch, Director of Northern Development. It appears that the plan is simply to save money in the (northern) provinces and to concentrate MRJ activities in London.

Ms Copitch has circulated an email appeal to the chairmen and rabbis of northern congregations asking them to intervene. She points out that the MRJ "board are proposing to close the Northern Office and make me redundant as a result of lack of funds and the need to make savings.

Why Gerald Lost His Stripes

I'm not surprised that the Jewish Chronicle's esteemed film critic has got himself into hot water over his review of "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas".

I'm sure Gerald Aaron did not go out of his way to be unkind - he never does - but this was a rare occasion when he seemed to be unaccountably wrong.

His love of the original book made him slip into a trap of which he should be more wary than most. He compared the film with the novel when he should have advised readers that the two are completely separate genres to be judged on their own merits.
