Last night Mitt Romney raised money in the Big Apple for his campaign. $1.4 million, he boasted, adding parenthetically and pathetically, I might note
parenthetically, that he was charging for the drinks so he could keep all the money. Long lines for a glass of wine were maybe a harbinger of what it
would like to be in the US with him as president.

In yesterday's El Diario/La Prensa, there is a story by Silvina Sterin Pensil about a rabbi in Queens. He has been in the US 40 years now, his name is David Algaze. He says people sometime stare when they see him in a kippa and then hear him speaking Spanish. His shul, located at 108-11 69th Street, is in the leafy neighbourhood of Forest Hills.
There is an empty Congressional seat being contested on Long Island, after Anthony Weiner had to resign for sending photos of his weiner around...odd situation, his wife is a Saudi, and works for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton...Weiner is pro-Israel. The Democrats seek to replace him with David Weprin, whilst the GOP wants to get Bob Turner in.
The next president of the US will be Ron Paul; in 2020 it will be not only a Jew, but a woman. Here is a scene of that day:
It was inauguration day, and it was the first inauguration of a Jewish woman president. There was her mother
seated proudly front and centre, with the chief justice of the Supreme Court on one side, and a senior senator on the other.
The candidates in the US are lining up to take a shot at Obama, whom most would say is the root of all the evils in the world. I would hesitate to blame him for what his GOP predecessors helped to make...but I would like to see him go all the same.
Last week many went out and bought quinoa in preparation for Passover. Some, however, want to know if this grain chews its cud or has a cloven hoof and are looking to their kashrut experts for answers. Two experts, three opinions. So they are waiting for the kosher inspectors to travel to remote mountains of Bolivia to get an answer.
The Chabad Lubavitch Synagogue in Santa Monica, California suffered an explosion which, intially thought to be an accident, has been linked to Ron Hirsch, a 60-year-old who was known to frequent synagogues and seek charity from them and other Jewish organisations in the area. No motive has yet been established.
Walking on West 16th Street yesterday, a number of Hebrew prayer books were out on the street, and with them a copy of Remember the Days: Essays on Honour of Cecil Roth, edited by John M.
Argentine born Shifra Lerer passed away on Saturday here in NY. She was 95. She was a darling of the Yiddish theatre scene who performed in such well known mainstream pieces as "Those Were the Days" and Avalon( both from 1990) and Woody Allen's "Deconstructing Harry" (1997); she portrayed a very Jewish persona in these films.
There are some nasty comments running around the Lower East Side against our tribe this week, as an art gallery, or porn shop, depending on your point of view, mine is much the latter, got some complaints from Miriam Katz, a teacher at the nearby Mesivtha Tifereth Jerusalem. "My students are innocent children and they walk by and shouldn't be exposed to this disgrace. This is pornography."
Paul Golin, an associate director of the Jewish Outreach Institute in Manhattan, has found the enemy and it is in his office: the chair. He suspected the device, and his fears have been found to be true.
Noy Aloosha, a 31yo Israeli journalist and musician, made a mockery of Qaddafi by dubbing in a song over his speech; so now we see him but hear "Hey Baby" by Pitbull. It is titled Zenga-zenga, in echo of the word zanqa, which means alleyway in Arabic. Qaddafi threatened to hunt down his opponents in alleyways.
Camp survivor Arnost Lustig passed away on 26 February after a five year battle with cancer.
He was an internationally acclaimed author, whose works include "Darkness Casts No Shadow." It is about
