Are you too clever for your own good?

Even before the Duke of Gloucester had berated Edward Gibbon for his "thick, square book", the encouragement of ignorance was already a powerful force in the English speaking world.

Whilst it can be recognized that the Right get in a tizzy when the Left use the USA as a reference, the fact is our cousins across the pond do have some of the brightest and best examples. Such as Thomas Jefferson and John Quincy Adams, both accused of being unsuitable for political office due to their intellectual pursuits.

The following is an amended post I wrote on The Guardian on the 22nd June 2010, and before I had heard of the news of the death of Peter Walker.

Agua de Córdoba

This is, for the want of a better word, a draft rendering of a free style piece of music for guitar, part of a collection of themes that I am putting together/composing and which I hope to include with other pieces such Moviemiento, El jardin del mundo, and other themes related to Córdoba - the city of three cultures and the city of ideas. This one is day dreaming/reminiscing about flowing water, and just everyday things that we generally take for granted, sometimes, too much for granted.

Mario Benedetti, 1920 To 2009

The Uruguayan writer Mario Orlando Hamlet Hardy Brenno Benedetti Farugia, better known as Mario Benedetti, is no longer with us. Born in the small town of Paso de los Toros in the department of Tacuarembó, on the 14th of September 1920, he died in his home in the city of Montevideo, this last Sunday (17/5/2009), at the age of 88.

Financial Crisis and Subprime

Oh dear, whatever happened here? After years of over-borrowing and under-saving, the plentiful supply of cheap and easy money, the enthusiastic recklessness of a number of financial managers, and the complaisance of governments, the inevitable happened, and panic ensued.

It has not been edifying to see political leaders – people at one time we might have considered intelligent, cautious and wise human beings, falling over each other, in the courageous rush to identify scapegoats, to nationalise bad debt and to prop up failing companies.
