Pluralism Shmuralism

I'm amused that Rabbi Gelfand's criteria for pluralistic enterprises (JC 10th October) contains one about personal choice. Surely anyone to the right of Reform regards themeselves as personally commanded and therefore severely restricted in their entitlement to choose. This shouldn't stop them engaging: Orthodox Jews can reasonably argue that their way is the only authentic one and yet still sit down to listen and debate with the rest of us.

Something's rather strange about Rosh HaShanah pavements
Certainly something going on somewhere down below
Perhaps the Magefah set to spring at any sinner
An evil decree crouching cat like on the ashphalt

The folk who I pass fix eyes firmly on the pavements
Refusing to shift their gaze from goings on below
And turn a glance toward my stranger's physiognomy
Exchange a smile and greeting with one they do not know

Fearful I'm some agent perhaps Malach HaMovet
A distraction from the menace lurking there beneath
Like David studying Torah as the Malach hovered

What makes a Great War Poet?

Three cheers for Judith Chernaik for getting a poem by Rosenberg onto the underground (JC 19th September). It was certainly appropriate of her to point out that he suffered in the infantry not only because life in the trenches was awful but also because "his soul was full of literature but he was surrounded by people who were not interested in that."
