Critics of Wiesenthal

By itsjeremy, September 3, 2009

In my view there are few people who sit more highly than Simon Wiesenthal.
I have huge regard for him not only because of his mission, but of the WAY he carried out his mission.
And by that, I mean that he was (or seemed) tireless, painstaking, wholly committed and would stop at nothing to try to find nasties, wherever in the world they'd tried to hide.
The man - while utterly driven - appeared to me to be a gentle man, too. A gentleman, if you will.
And yet his steel and resolve was without question.
I have no criticism of the man at all.

The question to Axe..... (sic) (sick)

By itsjeremy, April 2, 2009

OK, so this is a Jewish blog in a Jewish publication - ok, in a largely christian (oops, muslim!) country that has its share of anti-semites.

But whatever is written here, by and large, is going to be pro-Jew, pro-Israel. Preaching to the converted, if you will.

That said, I think most people of Jewish faith in a mixed faith society have to learn knowledge of, respect and understanding of and for other beliefs - as we have to live in and around peoples from varying backgrounds and with varying value systems.

Auschwitz memorial day

By itsjeremy, January 27, 2009

The debate over whether to 'let things rest' or 'maintain a memorial' at Auschwitz-Birkenau seems to have reared its head again.

This, obviously, is a matter that stirs up strong feelings on both sides. It has been said that the survivors should have the casting vote - in deciding what happens to the shell of the camp. And I can see the logic in that. But I think if one were to listen to the survivors, why not listen to the relatives of the survivors who are no longer alive? Or to the relatives of those who did not survive?

The BBC's stand on Gaza

By itsjeremy, January 25, 2009

January 25, 2009

It's always tricky being the odd one out.
Whether that means being the only Jew, the only black person or the only one to hold a particular point of view. Particularly if 'everyone else' holds that diametrically opposed view.
On the face of it, not screening the DEC campaign's video - ostensibly an appeal for funds to help the innocent victims in Gaza - seems hard to comprehend. After all, are they not simply doing 'good' and channeling aid to homeless, starving people?
