WJR Mission to Rwanda: Week 6

Our last week here has been just as eventful as the past five weeks. Despite it being rainy season we have had two days of sunshine so we have taken advantage of this by sitting on our porch. The locals seem to think this is an invitation to come and speak to us and so consequently come onto our porch completely uninvited and unannounced.

We realised we have neglected to inform you about our diet whilst being out here so thought we should compensate. All our food is brought from the local market which happens twice a week. The market is loud, buzzy and completely different to everything we have at home.

Our second week began with a torrential downpour which continued for three days. This was not the African weather we hoped and prepared for! Yet on Monday we saw how important rain really is for Rwanda. When we arrived at the Kayonza Boys’ Centre, the children were dancing and washing their clothes with water from the rain gutters which they had substituted for a tap.

Hello from Rwanda! We are two third year students from the University of Nottingham, Karin Woolfe and Hannah Layton, and we are spending six weeks in Rwanda working for the Charity SACCA (Street Ahead Children’s Centre Association). We are both here to gain an experience of a lifetime by helping the Children to learn English and to bring a bit of happiness into their lives.
