Senior rabbi says age of consent in 'arbitrary'

The senior rabbi who counselled abuse victim Yehudis Goldsobel and then gave character evidence for her abuser in court has stood by his claim that the “age of legal consent is somewhat arbitrary” because “whether a girl is 15 or 16 does not mitigate the religious misdemeanour” or determine “whether the relationship was exploitative.”

A woman who was sexually abused by a close family friend has spoken out about her betrayal, first by her abuser and then by the Orthodox Jewish community.

Yehudis Goldsobel, now 27, from Edgware in north London was sexually assaulted by Menachem Mendel Levy from the age of 14. Three weeks ago he was jailed for three years.

Kerry wins Arab League support for peace talks

Prisoner’s suicide over kosher food

A convicted murderer has taken his own life in prison following a dispute with prison authorities over his demand for kosher meals that were also gluten free.

Simon Benson, 58, who was convicted of stabbing a man to death in 2003, had been on hunger strike at Maidstone Prison, and had not eaten a meal for a month before hanging himself in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Orthodox man appeals against his conviction

An Orthodox Jewish man who was jailed for three years for indecent assault of a child under the age of 16 is appealing against his conviction.

Menachem Mendel Levy, 41, from Golders Green, was found guilty on two charges of indecent assault against the girl.

He was acquitted on seven other charges, including rape and attempted rape, after the jury failed to reach a verdict.
