Peace at Israel/Gaza fence as internet cables laid

For a brief period there was peace along a half kilometre stretch of the security fence between Israel and Gaza on Wednesday and Thursday, as Palestinian and Israeli companies worked together to lay high speed internet cables for Gaza.

News agencies publish Netanyahu 'Nazi' photo

The Associated Press (AP) and Reuters, two of the largest news agencies in the world, have been heavily criticised for publishing a photo of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a pose that echoes a Nazi salute.

The photos were taken of the Israeli leader addressing the United Nations yesterday, his left arm raised in what looks like a “heil Hitler” salute.

Germany draft bill allows circumcision

Germany’s Justice Ministry on Wednesday moved to protect the rights of Jews and Muslims to carry out circumcisions, issuing a draft bill which allows the operation.

The development follows months of uncertainty following a Cologne district court ruling in May which banned religious circumcision.

Shoah refugee fails to get UK charity’s help

A Holocaust refugee who is a British citizen has been refused help by the leading British charity in America.

Ruth Babat, née Schillaj, was born in Frankfurt in 1933. Her parents fled Nazi Germany in 1937, settling in Golders Green, north London.

Peace walk raises £90,000

A hundred people from all around the world including Israel and the Palestinian territories walked 10km across the bridges of London on Sunday, raising £90,000 for international summer camp Seeds of Peace.

The Bridges to Peace walk, now in its second year, was joined by 160 more walking across bridges in 16 other countries.

Drugsline goes into liquidation

The Ilford-based charity Drugsline was put into voluntary liquidation this week. The Chabad-supported drugs outreach organisation, run by Rabbi Aryeh Sufrin, who received an MBE for his work, has educated hundreds of thousands of schoolchildren in its 23 years of operation, as well as supporting drugs users and their families. Its closure was announced in the JC three weeks ago.

I was angry with my ex-lodger — so I sent her dog poo at work

Boy's death sparks anti-Hamas demonstration in Gaza

The death of a three-year-old boy in a fire has sparked a rare anti-Hamas demonstration in Gaza.

Over 500 protesters in the Bureij refugee camp called for the toppling of the ruling group after the child died when a candle, which had been lit during a power cut, burned down his family’s house, Reuters reported. The fire also caused critical burns to his infant sister.

National Front’s Le Pen calls for kippah ban

Marine Le Pen, leader of France’s far-right party the National Front, has called for a public ban of kippot along with Muslim headscarves and other religious symbols.

In an interview with French newspaper Le Monde released earlier today, she called for a ban of headscarves “in shops, on public transport, in the street…”

Woman posted dog poo in lodger row

A Golders Green woman has been convicted of harassment and assault on a police officer, after a sequence of events during which she sent dog excrement to a former lodger by post.

Yanina Heuberger, 53, was convicted of sending both an abusive email and a further offending letter to lawyer Lisa Hirsowitz following a small claims settlement over the lodger’s rental deposit.
