Bank of Israel governor Stanley Fischer resigns

The governor of the bank of Israel, Stanley Fischer, has submitted his resignation.

Mr Fischer, who was once tipped to lead the International Monetary Fund, has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he will be stepping down on June 30, The Bank of Israel has said.

John Kerry plans to restart peace process as secretary of state

US Senator John Kerry plans to restart the peace process in the Middle East if he becomes secretary of state, the American Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro told Army Radio on Friday.

This announcement confirms what Mr Kerry said in his US Senate confirmation hearing on Thursday, where he said he hoped the Israeli elections would allow for a renewal of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks.

Satmar sex abuse counsellor Weberman given 103 years

A Satmar counsellor found guilty of 59 counts of sexual abuse of a young girl has been sentenced to 103 years in jail.

Nechemya Weberman, 54, of Brooklyn, New York was found guilty of abusing a girl for three years, which began when she was 12 years old. The girl had been sent to him for religious counselling because she was deemed “rebellious” by her Orthodox school.

Michael Winner has died aged 77

Film director Michael Winner has died aged 77, his wife has said.

Born in Hampstead, north London, in 1935 to a Russian father and a Polish mother, he started writing as a film critic aged just 14. He studied law and economics at Downing College, Cambridge, where he was the first Jewish editor of Cambridge University newspaper Varsity.

Netanyahu rejects Palestinian state within 1967 lines

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the idea of a Palestinian state with pre-1967 borders, saying it would lead to “Hamas 400 metres from my home”.

Mr Netanyahu told Israel’s Channel 2: “When they say, 'Go back to the 67 lines,' I stand against. When they say, 'Don't build in Jerusalem,' I stand against."

Nightingale House residents group submission
