Anelka ‘hate gesture must lead to long ban’

A leading adviser to the Football Association, and the head of a body representing European Jews, have attacked West Bromwich Albion football club for its response to Nicolas Anelka’s quenelle gesture.

Alex Goldberg, who set up the FA’s commission on antisemitism, told the JC that the club’s behaviour since the incident had been “foolish and weak”.

EU warns Israel over settlement pledge

The EU has hit out at Israel after a Jerusalem official said that tenders for new settlements would be announced following the release of Palestinian prisoners on Sunday.

An EU diplomat told Israel’s Channel 10 news that Jerusalem should expect a “harsh response by the European governments if it intends to go in this direction”.

When he arrived to speak, the packed lecture hall greeted Rabbi Mirvis with rapturous applause, and his speech also prompted a standing ovation.

Limmud's ethos of volunteering

How Limmud has grown

From its humble beginnings at a provincial boarding school in 1980, Limmud has grown into a global phenomenon spanning 60 Jewish communities across five continents.

1980: The first Limmud Conference takes place at Carmel College, Oxfordshire, with 80 people in attendance. Lord Sacks, before he becomes Chief Rabbi, is one of the participants. He does not return during his time in office.
