The prisoner exchange involving Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit and 477 Palestinian prisoners highlights the need for the humane treatment of all detainees in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT), Amnesty International said today.
“I have come gradually to see that, in a dangerous and largely hostile world, it is essential to Jews to have some country which is theirs, some region where they are not suspected aliens, some state which embodies what is distinctive in their culture.”
No place on Earth is completely safe for anyone. Israel has lost upwards of 20,000 citizens and soldiers in wars and terrorist incidents since 1948. However, the Jewish people lost six million members in the Holocaust of World War II; hundreds of thousands of Jews were killed in pogroms in the Ukraine and Russia.
The Merriam Webster dictionary defines ethnic cleansing as the expulsion, imprisonment, or killing of an ethnic minority by a dominant majority in order to achieve ethnic homogeneity - just how does that square with Israel rehousing Bedouin currently living illegally on state land in unrecognized villages with no facilities and placing them in recognized villages with full facilities.
