Catholics, Jews, Teather and Ward

By MatthewHarris, February 12, 2013

Top marks to the gay Jewish parents who have written to the Lib Dem MP Sarah Teather to dissent from Ms Teather's opposition to equal marriage ( Slightly lower marks, perhaps, for the headline about "Catholic MP" - or am I being over-sensitive?

Ethical lobbying does not an all-powerful lobby make

By MatthewHarris, October 4, 2012

As conference season unfolds, the role of interest groups in the political process is again under the spotlight. For the Jewish community, the term "lobby" rarely has favourable connotations.

Kaddish in Homeland on the Hoover

By MatthewHarris, July 4, 2012

Please don't read this if you have not yet watched Homeland and if you therefore don't want to know what happens. I'm watching it on my PVR, a Humax that my friends and I call the Hoover.

The Chief Rabbi and gay marriage

By MatthewHarris, June 22, 2012

I hope that there will be a measured, decent and respectful reaction to Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks' views on marriage equality (gay marriage) (, both inside and outside the Anglo-Jewish community.

Pentecost and Shavuot

Pro-Palestinian Tory and local Jewish community

By MatthewHarris, May 22, 2012

I have never wasted much time blogging about Barnet Council. I have wasted lots of time blogging about other things, but rarely about that. There is a band of bloggers who spend all their time blogging about the Council as if it was Parliament and they were Private Eye...One such is Mrs Angry (I know, I know).

I'm in the kosher pub

By MatthewHarris, May 3, 2012

Arriving early for some 'telling' (don't ask) at a nearby polling station, I couldn't resist stepping for the first time into Cricklewood's The Castle, which has some claim to be the world's only kosher pub, and which seems pleasant enough as pubs go. I have long wondered what makes a pub kosher. Is a kosher pub one in which it is cheaper to buy the beer wholesale?

Well, I have voted by post in the 2012 GLA elections. It will not surprise you that I voted Liberal Democrat, given that I am, you know, a Liberal Democrat. Move along. Nothing to see here. Dog bites man, Sun rises in morning, Lib Dem votes Lib Dem - so what?

Brian Paddick at London Jewish Forum

By MatthewHarris, April 20, 2012

I thought that Brian Paddick did well at this morning's breakfast meeting organised by the London Jewish Forum, which is organising similar meetings with other major London mayoral candidates. I'm not just saying that he did well because I am a Lib Dem; I honestly thought that it was more interesting than such political meetings (regardless of party) often are.
