Jacobson looking to overcome the odds at Oldham

The futures of two top Jewish footballers are up in the air at the moment. Joe Jacobson, the former Wales Under 21 captain, has been told that he can find another club by Oldham Athletic. In 2006, Jacobson became the first British Jew to play in the Football League since Barry Silkman. He moved to Bristol Rovers a year later and was then signed by former Oldham manager David Penney just over 12 months ago. But new boss Paul Dickov decided to release him.

Hapoel Tel Aviv close in on Champions League group stages

Hapoel Tel Aviv remain on course to reach the group stage of the Champions League after earning a 6-0 aggregate victory over Željezničar in Sarajevo on Wednesday night.

Leading 5-0 from the first leg in Israel last week, the Israeli champions earned a 1-0 win in the away leg with a 76th winner from Brazilian defender Douglas da Silva the icing on the cake.

New signing Ben Sahar, the former Chelsea striker, did not feature despite having recently signed a one-year loan deal from Espanyol. Nigerian keeper Vincent Enyeama, who has been linked with a move to Porto, was another absentee.

LMV 2A edged out by West Harrow

London Maccabi Vale 3rd XI made its first appearance of the season but a team combining youth and experience were edged out by one wicket by West Harrow.

No matter what level you play your cricket, as long as the opposition are well-matched you can have a great contest; which is what we had on Sunday. A match that went the full 80 overs and finished just after half past eight was played in an excellent spirit on both sides and hopefully gave LMV's youngsters valuable experience of how to deal with pressure.

Sager steers BESCC home

A captain’s innings from Joel Sager helped BESCC secure their second victory after beating Barnet Synagogue in the latest Inter-Synagogue friendly.

Two early wickets from Phil Lassman soon had Barnet on the back foot. Tight spells from Jamie Kaye and Freedman kept Barnet in check and after two well executed run-outs, Barnet were dismissed for 113.

BESCC overcame the early losses of Freedman and Turek. Wobbling at 18-3, Sager carried his bat, despite not having played since last August, to make 47 not out as BESCC eased home with four overs to spare.

Lederman jnr sparkles again

A man of the match display from Benjamin Lederman helped London Maccabi Vale 2nds earn a credible draw against Wembley at Vale Farm.

Playing in a timed match for the first time this season, LMV had the better of the result, but were unable to break through the determined defence of the experienced tail end of Wembley.

David Freedman and Lederman opened the batting for the third week in a row. Freedman was undone by an excellent in-swinger early on. Jeremy Harris came in and hit a couple of boundaries but was completely undone by another excellent swinging delivery.

Gutman leads Israel to first victory over Germany

A fine all-round performance from Israeli captain Herschel Gutman has led Israel to their first ever win over Germany as they ended their ICC European Championship Division Two campaign with a 56-run win.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Israel started their innings steadily but lost wickets, reaching 51 when the danger-man Eshkol Solomon was the fourth wicket down in the 14th over. This brought Herschel Gutman to the crease and he played what was very much a captain’s innings.

South Manchester wins NJCL T20

South Manchester Maccabi won the NJCL Twenty20 Cup after beating Salford in the final.

A hotly contested competition at Scholes Field in Gatley featured South Manchester, Manchester Maccabi, Salford and Leeds Maccabi.

South met rivals Maccabi in the first semi final of the day. The decision to insert Maccabi looked to have paid dividends as the Lieberman brothers, Akiva and Huddy, ripprf into the Maccabi top order, leaving them in a perilous state of 27-5, with Huddy taking 4-7.

Belmont & Edgware CC round-up

Belmont & Edware 1sts recorded a thumping 167-runs over West Middlesex in the Middlesex League Division Three.

This was a victory built on a platform provided by Daniel Abrahams (47) and Jonathan Evans (66), well-supported by the rest of the team.

Everyone chipped in, with every batsman reaching double figures, and key performances from Warren Averbuch (24*) and Ami Wynbourne (19*, including eight from one ball) at the death taking the total over the 300-run mark.

MAL within touching distance of promotion

MAL’s promotion hopes were given a boost as they claimed a crushing eight-wicket victory over promotion rivals Kensington & Chelsea in the Middlesex Sunday Cricket League Division Three.

Skipper Gav Lebens won the toss and chose to field on what is always a very quick scoring ground at Old Camdenians.

BECC youngsters prove that the future is bright

Belmont & Edgware 3rd XI suffered a 92-run defeat against Weldon.

Stand-in BECC captain Blasebalk won the toss and looking at the short boundaries and glut of young bowlers, decided to field. Based on the performance of the young team featuring six Under 17 players, it was the right decision as the strength was in the bowling.

Solomon century helps Israel end losing streak

Israel bounced back from three consecutive defeats at the ICC Europe Division 2 Championships in Guernsey with a 30-run victory over Gibraltar.

Batting first, Israel's Eshkol Solomon became only the second Israeli to score an international century, playing a lone hand in guiding Israel to 200.

Earlier, Shailesh Bangerra (27) and Josh Evans (17) gave Israel a useful start, adding 44 for the first wicket, before a dramatic collapse left the Israeli innings in tatters at 102-7.

Ben Haim set to join West Ham

West Ham manager Avram Grant has been reunited with Israeli defender Tal Ben Haim after agreeing to sign him from former club Portsmouth.

The Hammers agreed a deal with the cash-strapped club, relegated from the Premier League last season, after agreeing a compromise on Ben Haim's wages.

West Ham originally offered £30,000 a week, around £8,000 a week short of what the Ben Haim was earning at Portsmouth but they have improved their offer.

GB cricketers will always be batting on a sticky wicket

The European Maccabi Games are less than a year away. Proceedings get under way in Vienna at the opening ceremony on July 6 with Team GB and Austria expected to field the largest delegations. Guest teams from Israel, primarily juniors, USA and Canada will also feature with one or two possible additions.

Nineteen sports are currently on the schedule, ranging from badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, bridge, chess, fencing, field hockey, football, futsal, golf, judo, karate, squash, swimming, ten pin bowling, table tennis, target shooting, tennis and volleyball.

All change at Oldham

Simon Corney has taken over as chairman of Oldham Athletic after Simon Blitz left the club, along with director Danny Gazal.

Blitz cited personal and economic pressures for ending his seven-year association with the Latics after reportedly running up an eight-figure loss in that time.

Blitz said: "I don't feel I'm able to give the supporters the contribution they are looking for in the future."

Israel well beaten by Guernsey at Euro Championships

Israel lost its second consecutive match at the European Division 2 Cricket Championships, going down by eight wickets to hosts Guernsey.

Following yesterday’s three-run defeat against Norway, a poor batting display saw Israel dismissed for 86 after 35.2 overs at Port Soif.

Guernsey cruised home, finishing on 90-2 after 23 overs with Stuart Le Provost finishing unbeaten on 42.

Israel have a rest day on Thursday before games on consecutive days against France, Gibraltar and Germany.

Sassienies seal Maccabi Tenpin Bowling title

Last night saw the final round of Maccabi Tenpin Bowling’s second league season at Dunstable.

The top two teams, The Sassienies and Little & Large, were neck and neck with only pinfall separating them. With Little & Large taking the first game 4-0, The Sassienies fought back to take the second game by the same margin.

Going into the last game, it was all to play for but The Sassienies, represented by sibling pair of Darren and Charlie Sassienie, held their nerve to take the final game 3-1 and win the match 11-5 to win the 2010 title.

Late collapse costs Israel at Euro Championships

Israel suffered an agonising three-run defeat in their ICC European Division 2 Championships opener against Norway in in Guernsey.

A dramatic late order collapse saw Israel lost five wickets for just 10 runs to fall just short at College Field. Chasing what looked a slightly below par Norwegian total of 204, a 6th wicket partnership of 61 between Gabriel Schachat and Yanik Razporker looked to have set up the win, before the intervention of Zaheer Ashiq.

Lederman hat-trick inspires Vale 2nds

A hat-trick from Benjamin Lederman earned London Maccabi Vale 2nd a 48-run victory over Olympians.

After a slightly belated start due to the late arrival of the opposition, LMV were asked to bat first on a very dry Rowley Lane wicket.

David Freedman and Benjamin Lederman opened the innings together for the second consecutive week. Freedman did not last long as he was bowled in the second over. Jeff Permutt came in at No. 3, and he and Lederman played carefully against accurate bowling.

Benayoun: Benitez forced me out

Yossi Benayoun has revealed that former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez to be the reason behind his departure from Liverpool to Chelsea., accusing the Spaniard of trying to break him and treating him with disrespect.

In an interview with the News of The World, Benayoun said: " Everyone asks me why I left Liverpool. There is only one reason - Rafa Benitez. I agreed to join Chelsea before Roy Hodgson was appointed Liverpool's new manager.”

“I made up my mind to leave a long time ago as he never treated me with the respect I deserved. If I played well, I never felt he gave me credit."

MAL retains Maccabi T20

MAL retained the Maccabi GB T20 in emphatic style after crushing Southgate by nine wickets with more than nine overs to spare in the final in Bushey.

A 20-run victory in the semi-final over Belmont & Edgware was followed by a one-sided final where, having dismissed Southgate for 86, an 83-run partnership between captain Mark Landau and Yoav Lebens eased them home.
