Perfidia --- as sung and danced by Benben and Holly

By Trevor Fox, October 26, 2009

I think this is a great clip from You Tube. Perfidia performed al aire libre. Benben looks like someone out of a James Bond film. Like cool, man

Zwarte Piet and Jews' biscuits

By Trevor Fox, December 14, 2008

About 7 years ago I was sitting in an office in Amsterdam mid-morning on 6 December when a guy in a funny costume with his face blackened up rushes in with a sack full of presents for the staff.

Some kosher places in Paris 1983 - 2008

By Trevor Fox, December 6, 2008

Before the Channel Tunnel opened we used to fly on the early morning redeye from Gatwick to Orly, on the south side of the city, to implement accounting systems in French subsidiaries of UK companies.

As in other places kosher restaurants come and go. Here are some of my preferred ones in Paris :

1. Les Ailes at 34 Rue Richer next to the Folies Bergere. You should ensure that you enter through the right door otherwise you could end up on stage.

Jewish-Piemontese cooking recipe

By Trevor Fox, November 23, 2008

This recipe is possibly a fusion of Ashkenasi cuisine, as it contains chicken soup, and Sephardi cuisine. The recipe was given to me by Roberta Anau, an Italian Sephardi lady who runs a small hotel and restaurant, north of Turin, specialising in Sephardi cooking.

Kosher misunderstanding in Zurich - 2005

By Trevor Fox, November 23, 2008

One evening in Zurich I tried the kosher meat restaurant at the Israelitisches Gemeinde Zentrum ( Jewish Community Centre ). You are asked questions at the front door through an intercom by a young Israeli security chap called Erez. He did a good job. He asked if I had a photo on me and I said that I had a old photo of Sharon Stone in the newspaper that I was holding and would he like to see it. This was all totally lost on him.

Madrid kosher - La Escudilla and Naomi Grill - 2002 -2004

By Trevor Fox, November 15, 2008

After the pre-Pesach cemetery visit on Sunday morning we had booked a table for lunch at the new kosher restaurant, Naomi Grill, under the supervision of the Madrid rabbinate. Kosher restaurants in Madrid are like buses. You wait 500 years and then 2 come along at once. La Escudilla opened in December 2002 in Santissima Trinidad ( most Holy Trinity Street ), round the corner from the main synagogue and run by the son of Elias el carnicero ( the butcher ), Naomi opened in December 2004. Prior to that Madrid had been a kosher culinary backwater.

El Judio in Santiago de Compostela, Spain - 2005

By Trevor Fox, November 8, 2008

Standing in the sun in the great Plaza do Obradoiro in Santiago de Compostela my wife saw a street actor wearing medieval costume and wearing a false hook nose. He had a small sign around his neck that said “ Tome su foto con El Judio” ( have your photo taken with The Jew). A real-life Borat. Tourists were paying 2 Euros to have a photo taken with El Judio. I offered to stand in for him so at least they could have their photographs taken with an authentic Jew in shorts and sunhat but my gesture was rejected.

Turkiz at Bet Yitzhak - December 2003

By Trevor Fox, November 2, 2008

My wife wanted to buy some tagine dishes and Moroccan tea glasses. The manager at the Dan Caesarea told us about a shop called Turkiz in Beit Yizhak just outside Netanya between road numbers 2 and 4.

We meandered down to Netanya in heavy rain, turned left on to the road between road 2 and the ladies prison at Beit Lid and then turned left again to Beit Yitzhak about halfway along. We proceeded through Beit Yitzhak moshav heading north, round some bends until we reached a sharp right hand bend at which point a sign for Turkiz was indicated to the left.

Park Grill kosher restaurant - Melbourne, 2006

By Trevor Fox, November 2, 2008

We ate at Park Grill, the only kosher meat restaurant of any note in Melbourne. Park Grill is at 58 Hawthorn Road, Caulfield, at the junction with Inkerman Road. Last orders are at 8pm and it shuts at 9pm so if you are planning a late night out don’t go.

Last Yom Ha’atzmaut I was having dinner with colleagues in Antwerp when they told me to visit the synagogue in Ostend if I had the chance. I was told that it was modelled on the Dutch synagogue in Antwerp.

Cafe Eilat - Warsaw 1993 - culinary anti semitism

By Trevor Fox, October 27, 2008

As expats in Warsaw in 1993 we used to go to the Pink Elephant Club at the British Embassy once a month . I don’t know whether the embassies still do this but Thursday night was open night for UK expats and all you had to do in pre-global terrorism days was to show your blue hardback passport to the barman who made a note of its number and your name, not for security purposes but to ensure that you paid your food and bar tab.

Helenas in Caesarea old port - March 2007

By Trevor Fox, October 26, 2008

We ate at Helenas in Caesarea on Thursday night. I had called them earlier in the day to make a reservation ( which was unnecessary as it turned out as the place was half empty ), the girl had asked for my name and phone number and on arrival there was no record of the reservation. I had also made a reservation at Decks in Tiberias for Tuesday night but called to cancel and they had no record of a reservation. Is this fairly typical in Israel ? Otherwise what's the point of making a table reservation ?

New York and Atlantic City kosher restaurants - June 2007

By Trevor Fox, October 26, 2008

Friday lunchtime we ate at the Chart House, a large restaurant at Pier D on the waterfront at Weehawken, next to the Lincoln Tunnel on the New Jersey shore opposite Manhattan. Poor road signing as is usual in NYC, poor maps but we found it. We got a table for two straight away and sat by the window with a tremendous view of the Manhattan skyline. Good fish menu, good service, in and out within an hour as we were tired, straight up and down food with some Brooklyn lager, a bit over-priced but then you're paying for the view as well.

Ukraine - April 2008

By Trevor Fox, October 26, 2008

I spent three nights in the Ukraine this week for a client based in Brussels.

I flew to Kiev and then on to Chernigov, about 90 miles north on the way to Belarus. Wikipedia writes that Chernigov is famous for having the highest rate of thyroid cancer in the world.

Kehillat Zion kosher restaurant - Kowloon, Hong Kong

By Trevor Fox, October 25, 2008

On Saturday morning I was directed to a Sephardi synagogue in Kowloon on the first floor of a shopping plaza. Sephardi Jews are those of Mediterranean or Oriental extraction and usually sing jolly little songs compared with gloomy dirges sung by Ashkenasim or those of Eastern European or Russian origin. However this synagogue had a number of dour unfriendly Israelis living in Hong Kong. After the service I was about to leave when I noticed a number of Chinese ladies preparing lunch in a side kitchen.

Pinto kosher restaurant, Amsterdam - December 2006
