Hague says Iran deal 'enhances Middle East security'

Foreign Secretary William Hague defended the Iran nuclear deal in a speech to Parliament today.

He described the six month deal - to curb Iran's nuclear programme and lift some sanctions - as a “significant step towards enhancing the security of the Middle East and preventing nuclear proliferation worldwide.

Split over using synagogue resources to help new immigrants

Divisions in the community over its attitudes to immigrants have been revealed in the wake of Baroness Neuberger’s comments about the Bulgarians and Romanians expected to arrive in the UK next year.

Baroness Neuberger, rabbi of the West London Synagogue, said last week that British Jewry should speak out more on behalf of new arrivals, given its own history as an immigrant community.

Fashion world split over Galliano job at Vogue

The fashion world is split over Vogue UK magazine’s decision to use disgraced designer John Galliano as guest fashion editor for its December edition.

British Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman described Mr Galliano — who faced criminal charges after a drunken antisemitic rant in 2011 — as a designer “informed by a richness of imagination and history”.

300-year-old haggadah expected to fetch £150,000 at auction

An eighteenth century Hebrew manuscript in expected to fetch between £100,000 and £150,000 when it goes on auction on Friday.

The 1726 haggadah was discovered by an auctioneer at a Jewish home in north Manchester, inside a large Osem cardboard box that originally contained kosher food.

France 'uses all it strength' to fight antisemitism, Hollande tells Knesset

French President François Hollande has told Israeli politicians that France "uses all its strength combating antisemitism".

In a speech to the Knesset today, the French leader also expressed concern over Iran’s nuclear programme and reiterated his support for a two-state solution between the Israelis and Palestinians.

Apple in £200 million deal for Israeli tech company

Apple has bought an Israeli company for more than £200 million.

The telecommunications giant bought PrimeSense, a Tel Aviv-based maker of micro chips for 3D technology, for £214 million this week, according to Israeli financial newspaper Calcalist.

But other sources say the reported deal has not yet been signed and is still in the process of negotiations.

The BBC Trust has upheld a complaint against presenter Dan Snow that he implied that Israel started the Six-Day War. During the BBC2 documentary, A History of Syria, which aired in March, Mr Snow said that “Israel launched a series of strikes against Egypt, Jordan and Syria”.

Man spends record £51m on ‘Pink Star’ diamond

A Jewish man from New York bought a 59.60-carat pink diamond for a record £51 million at an auction in Geneva last night.

It is believed to be the largest sum ever paid for a gemstone.

The buyer, diamond cutter Isaac Wolf, named the flawless, oval-cut diamond “Pink Dream”. It was previously known as the “Pink Star”.

IDF heads to Philippines to help storm survivors

Israeli rescue forces and Jewish aid groups have been dispatched to the Philippines to help those affected by Typhoon Haiyan.

The storm swept through the eastern seaboard of the Philippines, before heading west and hitting six central Philippine islands. At least 10,000 people are believed to have been killed.

Man films hate attack in Montreal coffee shop

A Canadian Jewish man was attacked and racially abused by two Muslim women at a popular coffee shop in Montreal earlier this month.

The unidentified man, who was dining at Tim Horton’s cafe, filmed the attack on his phone.

He reportedly asked the women what they thought of the proposed ban on religious clothing.
