JC MSFL DIVISION ONE
CHIGWELL ATHLETIC 2 GLENTHORNE UNITED A 1

Glenthorne United's promotion hopes suffered a blow as they were beaten 2-1 by local rivals Chigwell Athletic at the Met Police Sports Ground.

Two wonder free-kicks from Paul Hizer did the trick for Chigwell.

Fabio Rivieccio scored for Glenthorne who were unable to repeat last week's 2-1 win over Richard Slater's men.

And to make matters worse, Glenthorne had Adam Shafron and Jake Barnett dismissed - both last men on seperate occasions.

Chigwell player-manager Richard Slater told JC Sport: "We were the better side overall and deserved the win. We started the game with quick tempo, but yet again we wernt clinical enough in front of goal for the amount of chances we missed.

"They had a 15-minute spell in second half after their goal, but thankfully we put the game to bed and ended our season with a win."

Glenthorne boss Sam Rosenthal told JC Sport: "We 'can't argue with the sending off's but we still had the chances to win the game, even when we went down to nine men.

"Credit to the boys for a great season, shame that teams pulling out and forfeiting games have decided our fate in the league."

Six-hitting Harmen give Uzan perfect send-off

JC MSFL DIVISION ONE
FAITHFOLD B 0 SOUTHGATE HARMEN 6

A stunning hat-trick from BEN MURRELL saw Southgate Harmen finish the season on a high after hitting Faithfold B for six to register their eighth win of the season.

Further strikes from Sam Castle, Alex Bull and Josh Franklin ensured outgoing manager Dan Uzan received the perfect send-off.

An emotional Uzan told JC Sport: "Sunday was the perfect send-off. After five seasons, it was my last game in charge and we came up against a tough Faithfold side, with a few Premiership players in the squad. We scored six and kept a clean sheet, I couldn't have asked for any more.

"I feel happy and in some ways relieved that I am leaving behind a great squad that will push on under new management and take this club back to the Premier League.

"The last five years at Harmen have been incredible. It's a special club that was set up by Jon Hirshler, Marc Cohen and Simon Lyons 12 years ago. I have tried my best to keep the team together, to keep them challenging, and most improtantly to have a squad of players we could be proud of.

"It has been humbling working with Stuart Cohen, who is the heartbeat of Southgate Harmen. Big Stu runs the club the way every club should be run, and he knows that he and Harmen can rely on me whenever they need.

"Thank you to all the players I have managed over the last five years, and everyone involved at the club."

- Simon Linden (Blizzard Storm) - commenting on Dan Simons' third goal against Raiders B, he told JC Sport: "The celebration was awful"

- Rob Richman (Raiders A) - "I'm pleased for Phil that, in his last game as Norstar chairman, he managed to score the last Norstar goal, but hopefully he won't be revealing his bare chest in celebration ever again"

- Motty Korman (Hendon B) - "It's been a long season and boys are looking forward to the summer break. Management will be sitting down over next few weeks to discuss how we can improve squad next season"

- Mike Shorvon (Temple Fortune A) - "I think Lions will be disappointed to drop two points, but we deserved something for the effort alone"

- Dan Curtis (Loughton Orient) - "over the second half of the season we have shown that we are a good team and with some hard work in pre-season, and we'll be looking to push on next year and be challenging at the top"

WINNER: Jamie Kyte (Lions B) - "I think today's games, across the league, show why the MSFL Division One is so special. There aren't many leagues across Europe where three teams can win the league on the last day of the season and I'm very proud to be in that league"

YOUR WEEKEND PREVIEW STARTS HERE:

JC MSFL PREMIER DIVISION

SEE LEAGUE TABLE

18 - Lee Cash (LM Lions A - 10 for Neasden A)
17 - Adam Stolerman (Redbridge JC A)
14 - Daryl Phillips (Faithfold A), Brad Wine (Oakwood)

-------------------------
-------------------------

DIVISION ONE

SEE LEAGUE TABLE

TOP-SCORERS
35 - Jamie (Shirley Park)
16 - Richard Silver (Camden)
15 - Yishai Last (Hendon B), Max Kyte (Lions B + 2 for A)

CHIGWELL ATHLETIC vs GLENTHORNE UNITED A
Dan Lassman was Glenthorne’s matchwinner in last weekend’s derby win that finally put daylight between his team and Shirley Park, and he will be looking to shoot down local rivals Chigwell in the team’s final game of the season, a win that they hope will land them the title.

Indeed Glenthorne will hope that local rivals Woodford Wanderers can do them a massive favour and take points off Camden Park in a double-header, but they have a match to win first.

Glenthorne bossed the first half against Chigwell last weekend, but manager Sam Rosenthal was concerned that his old club enjoyed large chunks of possession and left Glenthorne fans biting their nails up to the final whistle.

Ahead to kick-off, Rosenthal told JC Sport: "We're looking forward to another battle. We were pleased to have secured local bragging rights in the league last week and anything else we can get out of Sunday will top off a brilliant 1st year in Division One.

"All credit to the boys, we will go out and enjoy ourselves Sunday come what may."

The top four teams in the division have been the model of consistency, but the same can’t be said of Chigwell. Player-manager Richard Slater started the season in confident mood that he had the players to challenge for a top two finish.

Maccabiah training sessions have meant they haven’t always been at full-strength, but Slater this week offered no excuses for his team’s failure to become serious promotion challengers.

Ahead of the game, he told JC Sport: “It’s been a disappointing end to the season, but hopefully we can finish with a win, although we’re slightly low on numbers for our final game.”

Glenthorne go into the game nice and fresh and I expect them to finish an excellent campaign in style.

Venue – Chigwell Met Police Sports Ground, Ref – Andy Myerson, KO – 10am

JC star man: Josh Wynne (Glenthorne)

DC Prediction: Chigwell 1 Glenthorne 3

-------------------------------
-------------------------------

CAMDEN PARK vs WOODFORD WANDERERS (DOUBLE-HEADER)
I’m sure there’ll be a drink or two on the line at Faces if Woodford can take points off Camden Park on Sunday.

Leaders Glenthorne are praying their east London rivals will look to make life difficult for a Camden team gunning for the title.

It’s squeaky bum time for Camden right now, with Josh Marks’ troops having dropped points against Harmen last weekend.

They were denied maximum points by a keeper in top form in James Castle and Marks hopes his players find their shooting boots in what are two must-win games.

Guy Marks and Jake Saunders earned Camden a point last weekend, and back-to-back wins on Sunday would lift them two places, guaranteeing a top three finish.

Camden have named a full-strength team for Sunday’s marathon, with Marks telling JC Sport: “There’s a real urgency for the six ponts this weekend.”

Woodford were down to the bare bones in the latter stages against Hendon last Sunday and Marks hopes this is a good omen. They led 2-0 but injuries forced them to finish with just nine men.

Camden have only lost twice at home this season, to Glenthorne and Lions and, as long as they hold their nerve, I’d back them to do just enough in both games, but it’s crucial they play the game rather than the occasion.

Venue – Ark Academy, Ref – Tony McEvoy, KO – 10am

JC star man: Guy Marks (Camden)

DC Prediction: Camden 3 Woodford 1/Woodford 1 Camden 2

-------------------------
-------------------------

FAITHFOLD B vs SOUTHGATE HARMEN
There’s a real feel-good-factor about Harmen at the minute and I’m backing Dan Uzan’s men to finish the season in style against relegated Faithfold B.

James Castle was the star of the show against title-chasing Camden Park last weekend. He produced some top quality saves to earn his team a point in a four-goal thriller. Wing wizard Alex Bull and the evergreen Adam Osper also caught the eye against one of the division’s fancied teams.

The Castles have shown real star qualities since moving to Ashmole and the Harmen heroes will be looking to give keeper James the perfect send-off before he prepares to represent Team GB at the 19th Maccabiah Games.

This has been another steep learning curve for everyone at Faithfold B. Keeper Grant Waissel has needed to be in top form, while Leor Harel has impressed once more. Assistant-manager Ben Lewis believes this is a result of training with the club’s double-winning first team.

Dan Harris has also earned some rave reviews and manager Rob Shooman will face another battle trying to keep hold of him once the summer transfer window opens.

Harmen executed their game-plan to perfection against Camden, and I can see them having too much for Faithfold on the day.

Ref – Neal Cohen

JC star man: Alex Bull (Harmen)

DC Prediction: Faithfold – Harmen 3

-------------------------
-------------------------

DIVISION TWO

SEE LEAGUE TABLE

TOP-SCORERS
28 - Reiss Mogilner (Brady B)
25 - Adam Hersh (Los Blancos)
16 - Dan Hildebrand (Brady B)

NORSTAR B vs LOS BLANCOS
Sunday is D-day for Los Blancos. Win and they’re up, draw or lose and their destiny would be out of their hands.

Whatever the outcome, it’s fair to say that tears will be shed on Sunday as Blancos keeper Josh Cohen bids farewell to the JC MSFL. Cohen has enjoyed an outstanding final season in goal for the club and no doubt, he’ll be determined to bow out on a high.

Blancos boss Adam Hersh was the hat-trick hero in the first meeting between the teams this season, as the boys in white romped home 8-0. There were also goals for Mikey Mendelsohn, Aryeh Marks, Sami Birnbaum, Adam Waters and Joel Kutner.

Hersh and Kutner were on target again in last weekend’s 4-2 win over FC Team B, and now they are just 90 minutes away from cementing Division One football next season.

I caught up with Hersh earlier in the week and this is what he told JC Sport. “It’s a massive game on Sunday where we hope to end our season on a high and claim a well earned second place.

“The excitement building up to the match is running through the whole squad resulting in nearly a full squad of 18 players making themselves available.

“A win is the target and if our pride, passion and determination is anything to go by then come 12:30 on Sunday the celebrations will be very much underway.”

But any Blancos fans expecting Norstar just to roll over and have their bellies tickled can think again. The Stars are much-improved from the first meeting, and in striker Rob Blackman they have a player who can really hurt them and potentially ruin their promotion party.

Plus, A-team boss and club chairman Phil Peters is also in contention to feature following his wonder goal against Raiders last weekend. He made the headlines for all sorts of reasons last weekend and knowing him as I do, will demand that standards are sky high for the club’s last-ever game in the JC MSFL before the merger with Raiders.

It’s definitely one to watch!

Venue – John Lyons, Ref – Steve Levy

JC star man: Josh Cohen (Blancos)

DC Prediction: Norstar 2 Blancos 3

Ready to go that extra mile

As many of you will know, rarely has a day gone by that I didn’t mention an injury, niggle or pain since completing the 2001 London Marathon.

Well I can confirm that three operations down the line, and with my latest sporting comeback complete, that will all stop following what I can only describe as an uplifting, no inspiring, meeting with Israel’s most famous Paralympian.

Noam Gershony wasn’t comfortable talking about the day he was involved in a fatal helicopter crash at London 2012, but he gave a warts and all tale to a captivated audience, relieving how he overcame all the odds following an accident that saw his co-pilot killed.

He told me this week that virtually every bone in his body was broken and the memory of two of his closest allies inspired him to come back from the dead and win gold.

Few people know the real meaning of the word pain like Noam. He is an inspiration to us all, a wonderful ambassador for Israel and proof, if ever there was, of the motto ‘impossible is nothing’.

He has overcome every hurdle in life, and done it with great dignity.

The hairs on the back of my neck stood up watching Noam watch himself receive gold at Stratford and break down in tears during Hatikvah, when the enormity of what he had achieved hit home. It has been one hell of a journey.

As for me, I’m back playing cricket and, due to Noam’s words of wisdom, have agreed to participate in the Maccabi GB Fun Run later this month. If you’re able to, I believe everyone should try to go that extra mile.

* North West Neasden A have started the search for a new manager after Daniel Hodes told the club he will be stepping down at the end of the season. Club stalwart Hodes has helped NWN survive a testing campaign in Division One of the JC MSFL.

He said: "My decision isn’t based on the fact that it’s been hard, at times, to get a team out, nor because we have struggled when we have turned up. It’s purely and simply because I can’t bear the heartache and torture of turning up, being so close to the pitch and not being able to get on it.

"My back has deteriorated to near chronic at times and until it gets fixed I’ll be away from Sunday morning football."

* Having stepped down as first-team coach at London Lions, it’s great to see the highly-regarded Darren Yarlett join David Pollock’s squad for the Open Football competition at the 19th Maccabiah Games.

Kayal: Israel must believe at Euro finals

Beram Kayal is confident Israel’s youngsters will give a good account of themselves at next month’s Euro under-21 finals.

The host nation has been drawn against England in Group A but the Celtic star believes Israel can progress.

"It’s a good chance for Israel to prove themselves on the big stage," Kayal said. "I missed my opportunity at that age group but it’s important the team plays their own game, enjoys the tournament and believes in themselves.

"It will be a very strong competition and it won’t be easy for Israel but everything is possible. Just look at Celtic – no-one gave us a chance against Barcelona in the Champions League but we proved everyone wrong.

"It’s a great chance for Israeli players to show they have the talent to play in the big leagues."

Having helped Celtic retain the SPL title, Kayal is now concentrating on Israel’s World Cup campaign. "The national team is doing well," he said. "It’s great to be back in the squad after injury and we believe we have a great chance."

A 3-3 draw against strongly fancied Portugal has left them on course for the playoffs as Eli Guttman’s men look to become only the second Israel team to reach the finals.

Kayal said: "It would be the best moment for everyone in Israel if we can do it. It’s been too long and the fans deserve to go to Brazil."

Gershony undecided over 2016 Paralympics

Noam Gershony says he has yet to decide if he will defend his Wheelchair Tennis crown at the 2016 paralympics in Brazil.

Gershony made history in London last summer when he won Israel’s only paralympic gold. But he confirmed this week that he will take a break from the tour to consider his options.

"I need to take some time off as the tour is very demanding," he said. "I’ve had an injury and I’m exhausted by all the training and travelling involved. People want to know if I will defend my title but I’m still undecided as I wouldn’t qualify automatically, even as the champion."

Gershony, who is 30 and lives in Tel Aviv, returned to the capital this week to address an audience about the work of the Tikvot programme which helps Israeli citizens and soldiers wounded in military action rehabilitate through sport.

<link2_title>Gershony undecided over 2016 Paralympics</link2_title>

He said: "Since winning gold, it’s amazing how many people recognise me in Israel. My achievement has really helped encourage young children with disabilities to take up sport, not just tennis but swimming as well."
A former IDF Apache attack helicopter pilot, Gershony also teaches maths to underprivileged children.
Recalling his heroics last summer, he said: "The Paralympics were such a huge event. They were very well-organised and I’m lucky to say I have competed at one.
"I love playing sport; it gives you a feeling like nothing else."

NORTHWOOD 1 BRADY MACCABI 2

A last-ditch effort from Sam Meisel helped Brady Maccabi under-nine Red’s complete the league and cup double after winning the Watford Friendly League Spring Shield.

A dramatic 2-1 victory over Northwood helped the team end their first season in non-Jewish football on a high.

Cheered on by their biggest crowd of the season, a first-half strike fro Ben Barnett put Brady in front against a Northwood team who play two divisions above them.

Northwood equalised three minutes from time but Brady won the match with the last kick of the game when a goal-kick from Sam Meisel looped over the Northwood keeper and into the back of the net.

Brady joint-manager Wayne Meisel said: “For a debut season, these boys have exceeded all expectations. We’ve beaten three teams from higher divisions to lift the trophy. It’s a big achievement.

"We asked the boys to enjoy the game and give it their all - they certainly did that and more. They are a great bunch of boys and a credit to Brady Maccabi and we all look forward to the challenges of next season.”

Co-manager David Tibber commented: “The boys were amazing. They battled every second of the match. We played a formation to contain the opposition in a game that we knew would be tight It was the perfect ending to the perfect season."

Danny Caro's MSFL TOTW: May 12

1. James CASTLE (Southgate Harmen) - "was outstanding against Camden Park, and I can honestly say that it was the best goalkeeping perfromance I have ever seen on a Sunday morning. James saved a penalty in the first half and made countless quality saves to keep us in the game. He is going to the Maccabia in the summer and on Sunday he showed why"

2. Alex LEWIS (North West Neasden A) - an unsung hero in the draw against Faithfold, hardly put a foot wrong

3. Adam KOSKY (London Maccabi Lions B) - "played in left back for the majority of the matches and was a real class act"

4. Adam OSPER (Southgate Harmen) - typically solid display as he helped keep things together against a rampant Camden

5. Jordan SAPLER (Glenthorne United B) - "back to the Sapler of previous seasons, controlled the Glenthorne defence winning the ball in the air and on the floor on at least 6 or 7 occasions to restrict Redbridge attack to half chances. A composed tough tackling performance"

6. Matt BERKLEY (Redbridge Jewish Care B) - worked his socks off in the derby against Glenthorne B

7. Yoni RAEBURN (Faithfold B) - hat-trick hero in the draw against Neasden, including a rare header!

8. Phil PETERS (Norstar A) - the powerful striker rolled back the years and changed the game with a barnstorming performance capped off by a stunning equaliser, appropriately the final goal of the current Norstar era

9. Daniel LASSMAN (Glenthorne United A) - two goals to win the game against Chigwell

10. Daniel SIMONS (Blizzard Storm) See PLAYER OF THE YEAR

11. Guy MARKS (Camden Park) - capped a stunning display on the left flank with a sublime finish in the draw against Harmen
