Family run Hotel Brigitte: a pleasant idyll during the ski season.

The four star superior hotel in Ischgl is a family run business that offers a very pleasant idyll just a stone's throw away from the centre of this lively resort.

Its rooms, suites and apartments are equipped with television, free internet access, minibar, safe and the usual array of smellies in the bathroom.

My room was at the very top of the hotel and was spacious with a large balcony offering views of the town and mountains. Had it been summer I would happily have spent an hour or two sitting there, quaffing coffee.

Breakfast was designed to set you up for a day's skiing and is served in the first floor dining room which is big enough to allow you to avoid any unwelcome morning 'chat' with other residents - strangers basically - something which has ruined many a breakfast for me in the past.

Evening meals can also be taken here and the hotel offers a wide ranging menu and a fine wine list, served up, for the most part, by Herbert, a delightful waiter who I have no doubt will still be there in thirty years time.

Just don't ask him about music, I did and found the answer overlong by about twenty minutes.

There's a very pleasant and most welcome spa at the hotel with three different saunas, a couple of steam rooms and an ice cave, the latter of which I didn't experience because frankly you'd have to be slightly insane to do so.

Be warned though, the locals are not shy and do like to let it all hang out when getting a sweat on, I trust you get my drift.

Elsewhere there's a challengingly nippy pool, which I was brave enough to brave, a gym, which I didn't go anywhere near, and a beauty parlour with the usual menu of treatments available.

I had a great massage which, at 59 euros for fifty minutes I thought was pretty reasonable. (Or have I just lost touch with reality?)

You can also store your ski equipment in the basement ski room, which means once you've rented your equipment you don't have to shlepp to the ski shop to pick it up every morning, a great boon in my book.

Rates: from 110 euros
