1. James CASTLE (Southgate Harmen) - "was outstanding against Camden Park, and I can honestly say that it was the best goalkeeping perfromance I have ever seen on a Sunday morning. James saved a penalty in the first half and made countless quality saves to keep us in the game. He is going to the Maccabia in the summer and on Sunday he showed why"

2. Alex LEWIS (North West Neasden A) - an unsung hero in the draw against Faithfold, hardly put a foot wrong

3. Adam KOSKY (London Maccabi Lions B) - "played in left back for the majority of the matches and was a real class act"

4. Barnett HORWITZ (London Maccabi Lions) - MOM in the Henry Swerner Cup final. Did an excellent job marshalling NLR pace ace Gary Cohen

5. Jordan SAPLER (Glenthorne United B) - "back to the Sapler of previous seasons, controlled the Glenthorne defence winning the ball in the air and on the floor on at least 6 or 7 occasions to restrict Redbridge attack to half chances. A composed tough tackling performance"

6. Laurence LEIGH (London Maccabi Lions) - led NLR a merry dance with his pace and movement out wide

7. Yoni RAEBURN (Faithfold B) - hat-trick hero in the draw against Neasden, including a rare header!

8. Greg MORRIS (Glenthorne United B) - EDRS Stonegrove couldn't live with the speedster who capped an excellent performance in the Nathan Horwitz Cup final with a goal

9. Daniel LASSMAN (Glenthorne United A) - two goals to win the game against Chigwell

10. Daniel SIMONS (Blizzard Storm) See PLAYER OF THE YEAR

11. Guy MARKS (Camden Park) - capped a stunning display on the left flank with a sublime finish in the draw against Harmen

Winning isn't everything

I've been inundated with emails about teams winning various football competitions over the past few weeks, but the cup isn’t so full for quite everyone. The season is almost over so it’s with great sadness I report the demise of two clubs.

UJIA have struggled since Darren Rolfe stepped down as manager. Ben Radstone did his best to see the team complete the JC MSFL Division One season, but in the end it got too much.

"Getting a team together every week was becoming a real challenge and we were having to cancel games at the last minute, which was embarrassing for us and unfair on the team we were supposed to be playing,” Radstone told me.

"We'll use the summer to decide if we are going to start again in the third division next season.”
The U’s are the second Maccabi League team to fold this season and the question of a ‘player loan system’ must be considered again.

Another club to fold are South Mancunians who have dropped out of the Maccabi Masters League. MMFL press officer Jeremy Silverstone said: "We are all sad to see South Mancs pull out of the league and hope that it won’t be long before the players are once again enjoying Masters football, if not for a revitalised South Mancs team, then under another badge."

* It's a pretty depressing stat to think Israel won’t have a player in the main Singles draw at Wimbledon. Clearly Dudi Sela and Shahar Peer will need to raise their respective games. Several qualifying matches await them and it could be game, set and match before you know it.

* These really are exciting times for everyone at the all-conquering Republic of Flixton FC. Joint-manager Stuart Delmonte told me they’ve already had enquiries from "two top players" for next season in the Manchester Accountants League. The battle between them and South Manchester Sports Club will undoubtedly be one to watch.

* Hendon United Sports Club A boss David Garbacz was in fighting mood after the 3-2 victory over North London Raiders A. After watching his team cement second place behind Faithfold A, Garbacz said: “We will be strengthening in a number of positions in the summer so get your bets on early.”

* Wingate & Finchley will be the place to be on Sunday with four teams from the Maccabi Masters League in cup final action.

EDRS Stonegrove hope it's a case of third time lucky as they take on double-chasing Glenthorne United B in the Nathan Horwitz Cup. Then North London Raiders take on second division London Maccabi Lions in the Henry Swerner League Cup. It promises to be a great afternoon.

Thornes make it unlucky 13 for Brady

MACCABI MASTERS LEAGUE DIVISION ONE
BRADY MACCABI A 0 GLENTHORNE UNITED A 13

One of the most remarkable matches ever played in the Maccabi Masters League may have signalled the end of an era.

Champions of Division One for the past five seasons, and winners of both league and cup double for the past three years, Brady Maccabi A had – by their own standards – an unspectacular start to the season, but seemed to have recovered their form, and were steadily and ominously moving up the table, like a middle-distance runner who had timed his attack perfectly, cruising into the lead round the final bend.

But that was until Wednesday evening, when they met fellow title hopefuls Glenthorne United A.

The odds against the match ending in a 13-0 victory for Glenthorne may have troubled even the most dedicated bookmaker, but finish that way it did.

A stunning six-goal salvo from Danny Sugarman steered the Thornes towards double figures. Adam Kaye chipped in with a hat-trick, while Jason Levy, Steve Faye, Marc Radzan and Paul Allen completed the rout.

And whilst it might be argued that Glenthorne are now in pole position for the title, they will need to win their remaining two games. Given that these are against the other two teams in the top four – Southgate Harmen, and the current leaders, North London Raiders – the outcome is by no means a formality.

Indeed, Brady themselves are definitely not out of the running either, and won’t give up their title without a fight.

Nevertheless, Brady manager Daniel Collins was generous in his praise of Glenthorne after the match, saying: "Glenthorne were fantastic and never allowed Brady to get into the game; for 90 minutes they pressed and outfought Brady and thoroughly deserved the win."

It’s going to be a fascinating climax to the season.

Maccabi Masters round-up: May 5

In possibly the most intriguing and exciting finish to the Maccabi Masters League Division 1, Brady A moved ominously into the top two after a battling 2-1 win over Southgate Harmen, who will now feel that their title hopes are all but over.

Nick Collins scored both Brady goals, with Alex Bourne replying for Harmen.

Brady are scheduled to play table-topping Glenthorne A on Wednesday evening in a match which might go a long way towards determining the destination of this season’s trophy.

But still not out of it, and one of four teams across the two Divisions chasing a league and cup double, are North London Raiders, who reinforced their credentials with a 6-1 demolition of Scrabble, with goals from Ashley Davidson (3), Gary Cohen, Tony Plaskow and Kevin Lotzof. Steven Moss scored Scrabble’s consolation.

The race for the Division Two title has been equally compelling, and as two more of the double contenders locked horns, EDRS Stonegrove twice came from behind to goals from Glenthorne’s Greg Morris to win 3-2 with goals from Mark Kingston (2) and Phil Silver.

Whilst that defeat put a huge dent in Glenthorne’s title ambitions, London Maccabi Lions took full advantage to hit the front at exactly the right time, and make themselves clear favourites.

A 9-3 victory over Ashlodge was notable for the fact that, for once, Marc Morris wasn’t on the list of scorers, but Lawrence Leigh (2), David Price, Lawrence Swerner (2), Robert Sharpe, Simon Black, Frank Steinberg and Stuart Coutts ensured that they went to the top of the table in style, even if they did concede goals to Steve Bogen, Ian Sumray and Vince Goodman.
Meanwhile, Marshside also came back from a goal down to earn a 4-2 win against Glenthorne C, with goals from Fara Moghim (2), Ashley Marks and Nigel Shaffer.
Goals from Graham Meyer, Jon Dubiner and Paul Herszaft earned Temple Fortune a 3-1 victory over Brady B. Brian Deal registered for Brady.
