Easy as 1-2-3 for Redbridge JC

PETER MORRISON TROPHY QUARTER-FINALS
NORTH LONDON RAIDERS A 0 REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE A 3

Cup kings Redbridge A romped into the last four thanks to goals from Richie Caplin, Steve Summers and Adam Stolerman.

RJC boss Eilon Kennet told JC Sport: "Raiders were never going to be a push-over; nobody is at this stage of the competition.

"Coupled with their insightful knowledge of how to play on their worn out 3G pitch, they were always going to be tough opponents. In fact, we have a poor record at Brunel, so we had to careful.

"Again, getting the first goal settled us down and we pretty much dominated the game until the last minutes when they threw everything forward.

"So now its home to a resurgent Brady which will no doubt be another tough game."

RJC coach Danny Berg told JC Sport: "It was a very comfortable win - it took us 10-15 minutes to get going but apart from that we played some good football all over the pitch.

"All the lads are buzzing to be in one cup final already - we have never won the national cup so everyone can't wait to play Brady in the semi's which im sure will be a very good game. "All in all another strong win from us."

Raiders chairman Jonny Adelman, who took charge of the team in the absence of manager Rob Richman, told JC Sport: "We kept compact and battled well, but were undone by the direct ball against a well-drilled Redbridge. I couldn't have asked any more from the boys, especially with our wide players missing.

"We're very motivated to finish the league season strongly and most importantly we wish the gaffer a huge mazel tov on the arrival of baby Jake!"

Heartbreak drives Furman’s fight

Dean Furman is desperate to soothe the pain of his Africa Cup of Nations heartache by leading Oldham to FA Cup glory.

The South Africa midfielder was left close to tears after missing his spot kick in the quarter final penalty shoot-out defeat by Mali just three weeks ago.

But the 24-year-old bounced back to help the League One side claim a replay against Premier League Everton last weekend and is now targeting a shock win on Wednesday.

“Missing that penalty was heartbreaking and I was very sad, but the good thing about football is that there’s always another game around the corner,” he said.

“It was a shocking feeling. I’d practiced the day before and was always going to stick my hand up to take a penalty.

“I knew where I was going to stick it but the keeper has saved it. These things happen.

“But to come back to a game like that against Everton was amazing.”

Furman was on international duty while his Oldham teammates were busy dumping the might of Liverpool out of the FA Cup in the fourth round.

But he returned with an all-action cameo role as a 66th minute substitute to help his side fight back to claim a 2-2 draw and secure a money spinning replay at Goodison Park with the further prospect of a quarter final tie against Wigan on the horizon.

“That game against Everton was fantastic and we always knew we’d have a chance,” he said.

“Now we’ve got a replay at Goodison and it will be a great occasion under the floodlights there.

“Do we have a chance? Of course we do. The odds have been against us throughout the FA Cup from the very first game at Doncaster.

“If we can go there and put on a performance then we’ve got a good chance of surprising a few people.”

Furman also revealed that he spoke with Everton and former South Africa international Steven Pienaar after the game, even managing to get his hands on the player’s shirt.

“It was the first time I’d met him,” added Furman, who scored for Oldham in the 2-1 win at Stevenage last Tuesday. “We had a good chat and it was nice to meet him.

“He’s a great player, but they’ve got so many great players and we’ll have to be on form to stop them in the replay.”

Spare a thought for Corney

Who’d be a manager … but more to the point, who’d be a chairman? It’s been quite a week for Oldham Athletic’s Simon Corney, you could say. Beating Liverpool was beyond his wildest dreams and now his team has a chance to claim the scalp of another Premier League giant in the shape of Everton.

However, I can sense Simon doesn’t feel lucky right now as he knows his club won’t win the FA Cup and he realises the importance of League 1 survival more than most.

Having given his manager the dreaded vote of confidence this week, Corney has been looking on proudly as his captain, Dean Furman, flies the flag at the African Cup of Nations. And as young Dean sets his sights on a dream semi-final against Didier Drogba’s Ivory Coast, Corney and co are preparing for a not so glamorous game away at Walsall.

* Talking of managers, two men with the midas touch will be back in the spotlight on Sunday as the ambitious Republic of Flixton tackles Chigwell Athletic in the national round of the Peter Morrison Trophy.

Stuart Delmonte and Tony Rosenberg will look to repeat their heroics of 2011, when they steered Manchester Maccabi to the trophy, as they take on the east Londoners at the Accounts Direct Stadium.

Chigwell must watch out for Republic hotshot Rob Jacobs who has fired 25 goals in 11 games, while keeper Dan Garman has only conceded two goals in 11 games this season.

Chigwell are missing Rob Shepherdson, skipper Daniel Castle, Russell Brill, Glenn Davis, Jonathan Swead, Simon Felstein, Lee Hyams and Alex Norman, but manager Richard Slater can call on stalwarts Jonathan Raven and Darren Kay, both of whom are now based in Liverpool.

There’s also a north versus south tie in London where Camden Park take on Haroldeans. The Merseysiders have not played for a month due to the bad weather, but manager Fraser Saville is confident his team can progress. He said: "Last year, Hyde Park went to London and beat Shirley Park so we know it is possible."

* Jewish-owned greyhound Muzzle Tov is determined to go out with a bang after claiming his fifth win in nine races at Romford. Now, the syndicate, which includes Eliot Pollak, Edward Schwab, Daniel Hanstater and Aryeh Berkley, are looking to push him back into some A4 races.

Pollak said: "He’s got around six months left racing as he’s coming up to his fifth birthday. We’re looking to give him a good send-off before he retires gracefully and keeps the residents of Nightingale House entertained."

Corney savours 'best win'

Simon Corney has described the FA Cup win over Liverpool as the best result since he took over the club 10 years ago.

Two goals from Matt Smith and one from Reece Wabara earned Oldham a memorable 3-2 victory.

And after booking their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup for the first time in 19 years, the League 1 strugglers will again have home advantage when they take on Everton in round five.

Corney said: "I would say it is probably our best win as we were at home and also against the biggest club we have played and knocked out. We deserved to win and weren’t lucky as we scored three goals.

"It was fantastic, not just for me but also for the fans, everybody who works at the club and also for the town.

"The place was rocking and I have no doubt the atmosphere gave the players a lift."

Now Corney hopes the win will be the turning point of the season for his team. He said: "I’m fed up of talking about relegation the whole time, but staying in League 1 is much more important than beating Liverpool."

Having assured manager Paul Dickov his job is "safe for now," Corney hopes his team are able to improve their league form ahead of the next round.

He said: "Days like Sunday are fantastic but you can get carried away and you have to make the right decisions for the club.

Corney: We can beat Liverpool

Oldham Athletic chairman Simon Corney says it feels like he has won the lottery after his club pulled Liverpool out of the hat for the second time in 13 months in the FA Cup.

Victory over Nottingham Forest set up a fourth round clash against the Reds at Boundary Park at the end of the month.

Beaten 5-1 by Liverpool last season, Corney believes that home advantage can help his team record a famous cup upset.

He said: "It’s great for the fans to bring a club like Liverpool to Oldham because I think we’ve got a chance, I really do. Liverpool’s eyes are on the Premier League and although I’m not expecting to win, anything is possible in a one-off game.

"It would have been more lucrative to be drawn away from home, but it’s not always about the money. It’s been really tough financially this season, not just for us but all the lower league teams as all the money is directed to Premier League clubs. But it is a relief to get some extra cash coming through the turnstiles.

"It’s a struggle every year, we make a loss and when you get a run like this, to get a draw like this it’s just fantastic. It promises to be a wonderful day.

"We made in the region of £350,000 from our game at Anfield last season and with the match live on television, I hope it will bring in £250,000 this time."

Oldham captain Dean Furman produced an excellent display in the win over Forest but is likely to miss the match as he is on international duty with South Africa at the Africa Cup of Nations.

He said: "It’ll be a big challenge for the lads to reach the next round. I wish I could stick around but my duty lies elsewhere."

Latics manager Paul Dickov said: "We’ll miss Dean – he’s my captain and a character."

Elsewhere in the competition, Hastings’ Bradley Goldberg scored the goal of the game but it could not stop his team from tumbling out 4-1 against Middlesbrough at the Riverside, while Nick Blackman was on target in Sheffield United’s 3-0 victory at Oxford United.

Ben Haim back with a bang

Tal Ben Haim marked his QPR debut by setting up Kieron Dyer for the stoppage-time equaliser against WBA at Loftus Road.

The Israeli defender, 30, has signed a contract until the end of the season after being without a club since leaving Portsmouth in May.

Ben Haim said: “It’s great to be back and my first game after so long was not easy. After one or two more games I think I’ll be playing better.

“I worked hard during the months I was out of the game and kept myself fit, but I always believed in myself and waited for my chance.”

Ben Haim came through an awkward first match after being asked to play out of position on the left side by QPR boss Harry Redknapp. Nevertheless, he added steeliness to the QPR defence that has been sorely lacking in
Tal Ben Haim marked his QPR debut by setting up Kieron Dyer for the stoppage-time equaliser against WBA at Loftus Road.
Nevertheless, he added steeliness to the QPR defence that has been sorely lacking in
recent weeks.
Ben Haim thinks the Premier League’s bottom club can avoid the drop. “The team has great players and an excellent manager so I believe we can stay up."
Redknapp said: “Tal’s attitude is first class and the fact he can play anywhere across the back four is obviously a big bonus for us. He just wants to play. He’s not here for the money or anything like that. He just wants to come in and do his best for the club."

Lions will learn from FA Cup defeat, says Gold

FA CUP FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND
LONDON LIONS 2 AFC DUNSTABLE 4

London Lions' run in the FA Cup came to an end on Sunday losing for the first time this season in a spirited game against AFC Dunstable 4-2.

Lions will have no complaints about the result, on the day AFC Dunstable punished the home side for their mistakes. The away sides front two caused problems all afternoon but they were helped by at times lapses in concentration at the heart of the Lions back four.

On a glorious day the 180 or so spectators witnessed what at times was a terrific game of football played in a competitive spirit.

Both sides started cagily prodding and probing trying to get the upper hand but neither keeper had much to do in the first 20 minutes.

Then the game really came alive. Lions had the first chance of the match as Adam Bolle worked some space in the box. Dragging the ball past the onrushing keeper he shot towards the empty net. Unfortunately for Lions he didn’t get the connection needed to force the ball home and a covering defender managed to get back and clear off the line.

Then the visitors hit the crossbar from a free-kick with Mario Cenolli well beaten but thankful for the little bit of luck. With the game etching towards half-time AFC Dunstable once again crashed the crossbar this time from a shot just inside the 18-yard box.

Having ridden a little bit of luck at that stage, the Lions surged in front. Josh Kennet finished off a terrific passing move involving several players.

But their celebrations were cut short on the stroke of half time when AFC Dunstable, who had been threatening to score, finally delivered. Allowed too much time to receive the ball on the edge of the box, a quick one-two was played around the Lions defence and with time and space the no. 7 ghosted in and slotted home.

The game was very much still in the balance but arguably the Lions were a little fortunate to be level going in at the break.

The higher up the football chain you go the more your mistakes are punished. In the second half Lions paid the penalty for three individual mistakes which in the end were to prove costly.

AFC Dunstable took the lead when poor defending allowed the visitors no. 9 to break free and lob the ball over an exposed Cenolli in goal.

With Lions seemingly unable to step it up and break back into the game changes were needed. Sam Sloma, who arrived back from holiday 30 minutes before kick-off, replaced the hard working Daniel Stanton and Ben Ellis took over from Daran Bern.

Within 10 minutes of the change and Lions having their best spell of the game, Sloma drew Lions level with a stunning individual effort.

With the impetus in their favour, Lions looked a good bet to go on and win the game. However, celebrations were halted almost instantly when 10 seconds after the restart AFC Dunstable were back in front. Literally from kick-off they burst straight through the middle and with Michael Sacks and Adam Myeroff at sixes and sevens, a deflected shot saw Cenolli go one way and the ball the other, that moment killed the Lions revival dead.

With 10 minutes remaining Lions still created a few more chances to get back into the game but were very sloppy when well positioned, highlighted when three free-kicks were carelessly wasted.

In the dying moments AFC Dunstable sealed victory with another defensive lapse contributing to their cause ensuring their safe passage through to the 2nd round qualifying.

Lions manager Tony Gold summed up his teams first experience of playing in the FA Cup and his side's performance on the day. "The shame of today is that we didn’t do ourselves justice defensively. It was frustrating because we have actually been defending very well thus far, but the old adage is true, against better sides mistakes more often than not are punished. Today we just make too many individual mistakes.

"I’m immensely proud of the players and I hope they are too. They have etched forever a little bit of history, being the first-ever all Jewish side to compete in the FA Cup that is something to look back on with enormous satisfaction.

"These are the sides we want to be playing week in and week out, continuously testing ourselves, so we know what we have to do moving forward if we want to realise that dream.

"I said before the game we will found out a lot about ourselves today and we did."

Red-hot Lions storm past the Jets

THE FA CUP
LONDON LIONS 3 OXHEY JETS 1

London Lions made more club history by making the first round qualifying of the FA Cup beating Oxhey Jets from the Spartan South Midlands Premier League 3-1.

Sam Sloma, Daniel Stanton and Adam Bolle were all on target in a cup tie that had it all.

And so the adventure continues ... They say winning FA Cup are what dreams are made of, well it worked for Roy of the Rovers and Melchester Rovers so you never know.

London Lions moved into the FA Cup first round qualifying, making further history in the realms of Jewish football beating Oxhey Jets from the league above 3-1. Lions now face a mouth-watering home tie against AFC Dunstable.

Lions' fantastic start to the season continued with another dogged performance which quite simply blew their opponents away.

Some magnificent individual performances contributed to a phenomenal result with Guy Morris, Michael Sacks, Craig Ellis, Andy Glynne and Daran Bern catching the eye. However, it was the performance of Lions keeper Mario Cenolli that stole the show. When called upon he stood up and was counted and made three incredible saves one in particular from the penalty spot which was a big turning point in the game.

The home side believe it or not were missing several key players, leading marksman Aron Barnes, left back Jake Gottlieb and wingers Josh Kennet and Ben Ellis were all on holiday. TJ Keterman started up top for the first time this season with Sam Sloma dropping into midfield. Adam Myeroff returned from holiday and Adam Bolle made up the Lions bench.

Oxhey Jets have in recent seasons built up a reputation as somewhat of a specialist cup team. In the two teams time in the Herts County League, Jets always seemed to have the upper hand on the Lions so there was never going to be any love lost between the two sides.

Lions manager Tony Gold and coach Darren Yarlett had done their homework and there side were well prepared as to what to expect in the forthcoming 90 minutes.

Lions were expected to start fast and get at Jets early doors. However, it was the visitors who came steaming out the blocks and within minutes were 1-0 up following an uncharacteristic mistake by Daniel Stanton on the edge of the Lions box.

Cenolli, having rolled the ball to Stanton with acres of space, soon saw his roll out turned into a nightmare as Jets closed down quickly catching Stanton in two minds. Unable to move the ball out of the danger zone, Stanton lost the ball to the Jets forward whose shot was saved by the exposed Cenolli only for the rebound to be tapped home to the other spare player in space. It was the worst possible start for Lions and now it was imperative they regrouped and started again.

The tempo of the game was high helped by the slick surface following a heavy downpour. Both sides were probing, Oxhey searching for a second goal and Lions looking for an important equaliser.

Thankfully for Lions it was the latter and down to an unstoppable run from Daran Bern which resulted in the Jets defender scathing him down in the box giving the referee no choice but to award a penalty kick. Sloma stepped up and with pin-point precision dispatched the spot-kick past the keeper and into the goal. It was game on.

The game was now simmering nicely with both sides showing a competitive edge. Jets thought they were back in front 20 minutes before half-time but Cenolli made an outstanding save to claw the ball away from danger to divert what was without doubt a certain goal.

The match then boiled over following a strong challenge from Sloma on one of the Jets players following an alleged racial comment. Ignorance is bliss but there is still no place in the modern game for antisemitic remarks.

The referee handled the situation strongly but fairly and showing three yellow cards two to Jets and one to Lions the game resumed whole heartedly.

Then 10 minutes before the interval Stanton more than made up for his earlier lapse in concentration by firing Lions in front. Twenty yards from goal he turned on a six pence and lashed the ball home sending the Lions faithful into raptures.

The visitors were left shell-shocked and the home side dug in for all their worth to see out the half with the goal advantage.

The second 45 minutes was to have everything you would want from a high-octane cup tie. Oxhey Jets came out smelling blood desperate to get back into the game which for all intense and purposes was still very close despite the Lions one goal advantage.

Then came the turning point of the match which undoubtedly gave Lions the remaining impetus. A vicious shot from the Jets forward was blocked by the out-stretched arm of Guy Morris leaving the referee no choice but award a second penalty.

Cometh the hour cometh the man. With the penalty heading for the bottom left hand corner of the goal with some considerable power, Cenolli dived full-length to his right and pulled off arguably one of the best penalty saves seen in recent memory.

With the game still in Lions favour and with 25 minutes remaining the weary Matt Stock was replaced by Adam Bolle. Bolle, who was sent-off on his debut in midweek, was to redeem himself with a superb finish to put the tie beyond Oxhey Jets.

Sloma found the space and time to slot a super pass into Bolle’s stride, not needing a second invitation he pulled clear of his marker and calmly and coolly slotted the ball past the keeper into the empty net.

The 3-1 result was fully deserved. Lions worked incredibly hard and played superbly well to set up a mouth watering tie with high flying AFC Dunstable.

A delighted Lions manager Tony Gold was full of praise for his players. “Once again the players raised the bar," he said. "Today’s performance was one of the most accomplished I have seen from a Lions team in many a year.

“Forget Terry Venables and Wembley, the FA and ESPN should get there cameras down to Hemel on September 9 because it is going to be one hell of a game against AFC Dunstable. They are an excellent footballing side from what I remember, they have some very dangerous players and it will be a cracker.

“The FA CUP adventure is still alive when it ends who knows, but one thing is certain the players will look back on this journey in years to come with very fond memories."

Lions: Mario Cenolli, Ricky Engleman, Michael Sacks, Guy Morris (capt), Andy Glynne, Daniel Stanton, Sam Sloma (sub: Adam Myeroff), Craig Ellis, Daran Bern, Matt Stock (sub: Adam Bolle), TJ Keterman. Sub not used: Tony Gold

Four-midable Lions march on in FA Cup

Goals from Daniel Stanton, Aron Barnes, Ben Ellis and Sam Sloma helped London Lions turn on the style to win their first-ever match in the FA Cup following a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Clapton at Hemel Hempstead FC.

FA CUP EXTRA PRELIMINARY ROUND
LONDON LIONS 4 CLAPTON 0

It was an historic day all-round for the Lions who were also the first ever all Jewish team to win a competitive match in the FA Cup.

Playing their first game at Hemel Hempstead on a lovely summers day, Lions arrived at their new ground share in fine spirits and were looking forward to making a little Lions history.

The crowd of 80 were in for a football extravaganza as Lions produced a footballing display way above the level they currently play. Mario Cenolli started in goal with Morris, Michael Sacks, Ricky Engleman and Jake Gottlieb filling the defence. Andy Glynne, Daniel Stanton and Aron Barnes slotted into midfield with Josh Kennet, Ben Ellis and Sam Sloma driving the attacking force.

Clapton who have a rich history and lots of experience playing in the FA Cup arrived buoyant and full of confidence. Following the final whistle they left perplexed wondering what had just hit them.

As the whistle went getting the game under way Lions went straight for the jugular. Playing some fantastic possession football the home side had Clapton chasing shadows. Settling into a good rhythm Lions opened proceedings with Daniel Stanton going down in Lions history as the first player at the club to score in the FA Cup.
The Lions were the better team throughout and it came as no surprise when Stanton opened the scoring with a powerful finish at the far post following a dangerous, low cross from the impressive Josh Kennet.

The goal helped Lions settle further and they started to turn it on with some neat exchanges. The move of the game saw a wonderful Kennet shot tipped onto the cross bar following a build up involving no less than 12 passes and six different players.

Barnes doubled the lead minutes later when a speculative effort from distance was spilled into the net by Clapton keeper Mason Durrell.

The visiting management team didn’t hold back at the break as the rollicking coming from the away dressing room could be heard for miles. For Lions it was more of the same in the proceeding 45 minutes.

It was crystal clear that the next goal was going to be very important. Clapton needed it to feel they were making some contribution to the game and finding a way back in, and Lions to pretty much kill the contest off.

Two goals to the good at the interval, the Lions continued to take the game to their opponents from Essex and their perseverance was rewarded when Ben Ellis curled home a low shot from 20 yards.

Sloma was another thorn in Clapton's side throughout and his hard work was rewarded with a stunning finish, as he curled a shot into the top corner from 20 yards.

With Lions leading 4-0 going into the remaining 30 minutes changes were made. Daran Bern, Adam Myeroff and Kyle Bentwood were all introduced to replace some tired legs.

Clapton looked most dangerous at set-pieces but Mario Cenolli in the Lions goal and his defence were equal to everything they had to offer with Cenolli showing great hands and his defence making good early decisions to alleviate any unnecessary pressure.

Lions manager Tony Gold said: "What a marvellous day for London Lions and the Jewish community. The players were a credit to themselves and this fantastic club.

“A lot of people from the backroom staff, players, directors and administrators have put an awful lot of time, effort and hard work into this club especially over the last five years. Within that five year period we have made small but significant steps. Today’s result and occasion was dedicated to all those individuals who have been on that journey from day one of my appointment as manager with special mention going out to Steve Grenfell, Basil Wein, David Kyte, Neville Zeller, Neil Myeroff, Darren Yarlett, Paul Wise and David Snelman.

“I am extremely proud of all my players today and am honoured to be involved with such a tremendous group of lads who may not realise it, but have developed and grown into some very good footballers.

"Playing in the manner we did today and the way in which the players applied themselves makes all the hard work worthwhile and shows how much certain players have really improved their overall games”.

“No matter how long we have left in this competition we will make sure we make the most of every single second of every round.

“Our football at times today was unplayable and our finishing was on another level again testament to the work put in by the players, Steve and Darren at training.

“We will enjoy the next few days and then turn our attentions to Wednesday night where we start our long league campaign away at Welwyn Garden City”.

The Lions will take on Oxhey Jets or Leverstock Green in the next round.
