Maccabi Lawn Bowls to tour Israel again

Following successful lawn bowls tours to Israel in 2011 and 2012, the Maccabi Lawn Bowls Association will be returning to the region in this autumn.

Tour organiser, and Maccabi GB Vice President, Stuart Lustigman said: "The last two tours were so successful that I could not accommodate everyone that applied for this year's tour. Consequently, I have organised two back-to-back tours and, so far, a total of some 60 places have been reserved".

The tours will take place from September 29 to October 7 and October 7-15. Each tour will play four matches against local opposition and seven of Israel's lawn bowls clubs have agree to host the visitors.

In addition to competing, the groups will enjoy a full programme of educational, cultural and social activities with visits to places of interest not always frequented by tourists in Israel.

Lustigman said: "We still have a few places available and non-playing partners are also very welcome. As always, sport is a great vehicle to expose people to the Israel experience both young and not so young.

“This will bring to 12 the number of sports tours to Israel that I have organised since the year 2000 and it's great to know that the participants and the State of Israel both derive mutual benefit.”

A group of 34 people including 26 players from the Maccabi Lawn Bowls Association GB have completed a week-long tour of Israel.

The delegation played matches against the bowling clubs of Ra'anana, Ramat Gan, Haifa and Jerusalem. The matches proved very challenging but were not without some success.

The top GB triples team in the two-day match against Ra'anana were Stuart and Sheila Rose, together with John Laurence and Ruth Harris, Michael Allen and Elaine Rees had success in Haifa.

There was a team victory by 36 shots for Great Britain over Jerusalem with Michael Baum, Ruth Allen and Gerald Diamond taking top spot and Ray Harris, Hilary Burns and Anthony Goldwater in second place.

GB captain Ruth Harris said: "This whole trip was a great experience and in lawn bowls the more you play, the more you learn."

The tour was organised and headed by Stuart Lustigman who has for many years taken masters football delegations to Israel.

"This trip was another example of how sport can be used as a vehicle to support Israel and give players who might not make the Maccabiah a similar experience,” he said. “I am now looking at other possibilities.”

'Fantastic response' for JRDA

The Jewish Racing Drivers Association (JRDA) will be officially launched on September 11 at an event hosted by Lotus Silverstone during the Le Mans Series and Intercontinental Cup.

The JRDA announced earlier this year that they were forming an organisation which they hope will find a Jewish Formula 1 champion within five years, and they have attracted attention from the US and Europe.

Paul Burns of the JDRA said: "We've had a fantastic response from like-minded racing enthusiasts from far and wide and now have a great launch event."

Israeli driving prodigy Alon Day, who has teamed up with the JRDA, will be racing at the launch event and addressing attendees as a speaker afterwards.

Day, 19, currently races in the German Formula 3 series for HS Techneck Motorsport and is currently fifth in the 15-man championship with just under half of the season remaining.

He harbours ambitions of competing on the senior Formula 1 circuit and said: "Having the JRDA logo on my car acts as a visible reminder to our community that anyone with enough ambition and drive can achieve anything."

For information about the event, contact Paul Burns at info@jrda.co.uk.

Success could come at a price

Team GB's performance at the European Maccabi Games has been described as a huge success, and rightly so.

The bar was clearly raised in several sports with the Open and Junior footballers proving a cut above the rest. It was also the Games where our futsal players put themselves on the map. There were also excellent performances in golf, table tennis, tennis, badminton and ten pin bowling among others.

It now appears that we have formed a conveyor belt for success for future international events, although one aspect could prevent budding athletes from playing a part. Cost.

I've heard that it could cost up to £4,000 for GB athletes to compete at the 2013 Maccabiah Games in Israel.

I was part of the cricket team in 2005, and in 2009, athletes were asked to raise around £2,795 for representing their country. The price for a three-week trip, which includes pre-camp, kit, transport, accommodation, food, round-the-clock security and admin charges also sees GB subsidise some of the poorer nations. But rest assured, it was worth every penny. Spiralling costs mean that some very good athletes will be priced out of the Jewish Olympics. Maccabi's ethos is Sport for All and I hope they find a way to get everyone worthy of a place on the plane.

● The GB delegation received advice about nutrition although this seemed to go out of the window when footballer Michelle Keller mistakenly put sugar instead of salt on her chips before the flight home. Sounds like a bit of a sweetener if you ask me.

Ellis bowled over by kingpin Loberman

TEN PIN BOWLING Michael Loberman was the star turn at the Maccabi GB Tenpin Bowling tournament.

He exacted revenge over 2010 winner Gary Ellis over two games in the final of the scratch division at the Airport Bowl, in Harlington.

The opening round saw every bowler bowl five games, with the top eight qualifiers in the scratch division and the top eight qualifiers in the handicap division going through to the knockout stage. Ellis took home the Freddie Loberman Memorial Trophy after winning the first five games of the tournament. His handicap score of 1153, averaging 205 scratch, saw him beat another Team GB bowler, Jack Nesbit, by 12 pins.

Loberman finished in third place, averaging an impressive 208 scratch, leaving him as the top seed in the scratch knockout finals.

Having overcome scares against Robin Bluston and Larry Handworker on his way to the final, Loberman averaged an incredible 231 over six games. He took the high game with his first game of the tournament, 257 scratch, or 273 handicap.

Ellis bowled two games over 250 – 257 and 277 in his semi-final win over Patrik Goldberg of Sweden.

Goldberg won the 3rd/4th playoff after beating Handworker, who had earlier bowled a 265 game.

Ritchie Kneip, Ellis and Nesbit, all members of GB squad competing at the European Maccabi Games in Vienna, also posted high scores. Honourable mentions also go to Handworker and Robin Bluston. Handworker bowled a 234 in qualifying and in the knockout stages bowled a 265 game. Bluston bowled a 232 in qualifying.

The handicap knockout rounds proved to be just as epic. Maccabi stalwart Geoff Isaacs eventually came out on top, defeating top seed Gary Nesbit in a very close run final match.

Nesbit had beaten current GB captain Ian Davis and former squad member Paul Hart on his way to the final, but lost out to the very experienced Isaacs who accounted for Paul Sassienie and newcomer Craig Grant, who averaged 160 in his first tournament, on his way to the final.

Five of the six members of the GB bowling team for Vienna were represented.

Competition organiser Russell Sniper said: "This was a good chance for the players to practice on conditions similar to those in Austria, and will hopefully have shown them where adjustments and corrections need to be made prior to the Games."
