Alex Ullmann has urged his Leeds Maccabi 2nd side to target the MJSL league title following their stunning cup triumph.

Ullmann’s team became the first from Leeds to win the Tony Cohen Memorial Cup since the Judeans triumphed in 1987.

Republic of Flixton seal MJSL treble

Republic of Flixton wrapped up the MJSL crown – but the new league champions won’t be around to defend their title next season after announcing a move into the world of non-Jewish football.

The club, which will compete alongside South Manchester Sports 1st in the Premier Division of the Manchester Accountants League, will instead enter a reserve side into the MJSL.

Republic has enjoyed a sensational season; winning the treble and celebrating in style following Tuesday’s 10-0 win over Oakhill Lions.

Jon Berens (3), Dan Garman (2), Jacob Shapiro (2), Adam Tauber, Saul Shapiro and Adam Wilson were the scorers against Oakhill, a victory that followed Sunday's 6-0 success over FC Cosmos.

Jonny Lewis was named as MJSL Player of the Year and Rob Jacobs took home the golden boot as Republic bowed out at the top.

Joint-manager Stuart Delmonte revealed that the club will simply be known as ‘Flixton’ next season, while Flixton reserves will compete in the MJSL.

“When Tony Rosenberg and I took over last summer, we wanted to win something, but I don’t think we’d envisaged this success,” said Delmonte.

“We’re now going to compete in non-Jewish football and hopefully we can continue to be successful and attract a few more players.

“We’ve got a great set of lads and we feel we can compete at a higher level, but we’re still planning to enter the Peter Morrison Trophy, while the reserves will play in the MJSL."

Co-manager Tony Rosenberg said: "We’ll have a new pitch for next season at the Accounts Direct Stadium and the facilities are fantastic.

FA Award a big boost for Jewish soccer, says Myer

Brian Myer says he is proud to be associated with the Manchester Jewish Soccer League after it received a silver award from the FA.

The MJSL has been recognised as the best grassroots league in the region following the accolade which is part of the FA’s Respect and Fair Play Award.

League chairman Brian Myer said: "It’s an excellent achievement to be recognised by our governing football body and to be described as ‘one of the best Leagues in the country for fair play’ is indeed something that we can all be proud of.

"Recognition in the wider community is always very welcome. Much of this recognition is due to the very hard work put in by our Secretary and vice-chairman, Paul Rose, who liaises constantly with the Manchester FA in his dual role on our League Executive and on the MFA committee.

"So whilst we might be small in numbers, we are well known and recognised in football terms not only in our own community, but throughout Greater Manchester and the rest of the country.

"Now we need to maintain our high standards and, as usual, it is up to the managers, secretaries, players, referees and all who play any role in our League to ensure that we stay in this position."

The MJSL will be rewarded with the choice of hosting the FA Cup or a guest speaker at an event, funding to improve coaching or hospitality tickets to see England at Wembley.

FA Respect manager Dermot Collins said: "Achieving the Silver Award has marked the Manchester Jewish Soccer League out as one of the best league’s in the country. Through education, promotion and dogged perseverance, it has changed the behaviour of teams and individuals and in doing so helped to ensure the continuing health of our national game."

Something to be really proud of

I’m sure many of you remember that gag in the film Airplane about the book on famous Jewish sportsman being a light read. Not any more it isn’t. In fact, now is probably about the perfect time to update and extend the notional volume.

There is a certain wow factor about the level of achievement and sporting firsts dominating the back pages of your favourite Jewish newspaper this week, and I’d like to highlight three stories in particular.

It has been something of a Herculean effort from Tony Gold’s London Lions to win Spartan South Midlands League Division One title. They have come through an energy-sapping fixture pile-up that has seen a special group of players show great commitment, both on and off the pitch — leaving work early and travelling up and down the country to get to matches — and make huge sacrifices.

On the pitch, they have shown hunger, passion, commitment, mental and physical strength and recovery, not to mention the talent to win games, but the rewards are there for all to see.

Tomorrow, they will collect the trophy in front of their family and friends in what will be a proud moment for everyone connected to the club.

When Stanley Perlman asked Herschel Gutman to become Israel’s National Cricket Development Officer four years ago, he knew exactly what he was doing. He picked a real gem. Herschel knows his cricket and is a class act on and off the pitch. He made a big impression on English cricket during his time with Belmont & Edgware and his ICC European Coach of the Year award really is big news for the sport in Israel.

Hats off to the Manchester Jewish Soccer League for their special award from the FA. Numbers continue to fall in 11-a-side football across the land, but Brian Myer, Paul Rose and the rest of the league deserve a huge pat on the back for their starring role in helping to give Jewish football the recognition it deserves. The 10-team league also goes to show that size isn’t everything.

* Referee Ken Goldman praised players from both Waldaf Town and Scrabble FC after giving the teams perfect marks for sportsmanship in Sunday’s Maccabi Masters League. Goldman said: "Incredibly, I only gave one foul in the first half. That is a record for me. Excellent sportsmanship all round."

* Faithfold A need just a point against defending champions Hendon to win the JC MSFL title this weekend. The Superhoops have three games remaining, but manager Zuriel Solomon is determined to win it at the first attempt. They last won the title in 2005 and there’s every chance they will be toasting double delight on Sunday.

Northern Football round-up: March 24

South Manchester Sports 1st are on course for a historic double after booking their place in the semi-finals of the Peter Morrison Trophy.

Laurence Newman's men built on their impressive league win over Miam Miam last week by defeating reigning MSFL champions and cup holders Hendon United Sports Club A 3-1 after extra-time at the Armitage.

South, who are currently top of the Manchester Accountants League, look set to retain their title following last week's success against their nearest challengers.

And the confidence of that victory gave them an extra edge as they produced another impressive performance.

Jack Lee had given South the lead before the visitors took the contest into an additional 30 minutes thanks to Avi Korman's fine strike with just six minutes of normal time remaining.

But South refused to be denied with Harvey Kaye's stunning effort and a customary Adam Lavin goal sealing victory for the northern side.

South are the only Manchester-based club left in the competition and manager Newman is delighted that his team is restoring some northern pride by making it through to face Camden Park in the last four.

"We know Hendon are a really good side and we were missing a few players too, but our tempo, and concentration was excellent particularly the second half," he said.

"I felt we were really good value for our win. Thanks to Hendon for making the trip and I wish them well in their remaining league games.

"We are delighted to still be representing Manchester in this competition."

Elsewhere, Manchester Maccabi 1st crashed out following a 1-0 home defeat by MSFL Premier Division side Brady Maccabi A.

Jonny Ellis scored the only goal of the game against 10-man Maccabi, who had Oliver Gilbert sent off.

In the MJSL, Jamie Harris hit a hat-trick as Haroldeans crushed Leeds Maccabi 2nd.

The defending champions were too hot to handle and eased to a 6-2 win in a game which was switched from Leeds to Manchester following snow showers.

Harris’ treble and strikes from Alistair Goldsmith, Zach Goodman and Josh Silverberg keeps the Merseysiders within eight points of leaders Republic of Flixton.

Daniel Herschovitz, Aviv Levy and Ben Ullmann got the goals for Leeds, who sit fourth after slumping to their sixth defeat of the season.

Raffy Klyne was the hero for Crumpsall after his hat-trick inspired a 4-1 win over Broughton.

Gavriel Bolel was also on target with Avi Libbert claiming a late consolation for bottom of the table Broughton.

Republic of Flixton remain top of the table after being awarded three points after South Manchester Sports 2nd failed to field a team for their league fixture.
