For any new mother, taking their baby son to a restaurant is fraught with challenges, But actress Natalie Portman proved adept at dealing with a room full of disgruntled diners last week.

Her son Alef, who is nearly a year old, was apparently not as enamoured with the menu at a vegan deli in Los Angeles as his mother was, and refused to stop crying.

To placate the other diners, the Black Swan star offered to pay the bill of everyone in the room who was disturbed.

Meanwhile the Oscar-winning actress, who celebrated her 31st birthday last week, stayed to enjoy her meal.

Natalie Portman is now wearing a wedding ring

Natalie Portman is now a married woman, according to a jeweller who designed rings for the star and her partner.

The Jerusalem-born actress sparked rumours after walking the red carpet at Sunday's Academy Awards with a ring on her finger.

The 30-year-old, who won the Best Actress Oscar a year ago for her role in Black Swan, has not confirmed the speculation.

But jeweller Jamie Wolf told Us Weekly magazine that the ring was indeed a wedding band, designed for the actress to match one made for her purported husband, choreographer Benjamin Millepied.

The couple met on the set of Black Swan and have a seven-month old son called Alef.

Ms Wolf told the magazine: "The rings were made with recycled platinum and conflict-free diamonds."

Portman planning Safran Foer animals documentary

Natalie Portman will no longer be eating cheesecake on Shavuot - because reading Jonathan Safran Foer's novel Eating Animals persuaded her to become a vegan.

The Oscar-winning actress is now planning a documentary, based on the book.

Jonathan Safran Foer told a French website: "Natalie Portman is going to make a movie of it. She wants to make a very personal documentary.

"She contacted me, she told me that she loved the book. I know her now, I will help her eventually, but it will be her vision. She's only at the very beginning."

After 20 years as a vegetarian, Ms Portman was spurred by Mr Foer's reasoning to turn to veganism. She wrote a review of the book for the Huffington Post.

"I've always been shy about being critical of others' choices because I hate when people do that to me," the actress wrote.

"But this book reminded me that some things are just wrong."

Eating Animals stems from Mr Safran Foer's personal decisions about his child's dietary needs, leading to a quest to discover the effects of food on the environment.
