As jihadis flood in, Golan becomes a brand new kind of danger zone

Conflicting reports on the status of the Syrian army on the Golan Heights has increased concern over instability on what was for nearly four decades Israel’s quietest frontier.

Large Israeli and Syrian forces have eyeballed each other across the border since the end of the 1973 Yom Kippur War and, despite tension that almost escalated into fighting on a number of occasions, a ceasefire reigned.

According to a number of reports emanating from Syria in recent weeks, the Syrian Army forces in the Golan, which numbered over 20,000, have greatly dwindled due to a combination of desertions and redeployments of some units to areas where the embattled regime of Bashar al-Assad is trying to suppress the ongoing rebellion.

Some sources say that the two divisions, one close to the border and another on the foothills of the Golan ridge closer to Damascus, can no longer be regarded as viable fighting forces.

There have been some redeployments, but the two divisions remain largely intact, according to other sources.

And while Assad is not currently interested in an outbreak of fighting on the Golan, there has been a sharp upturn in the number of incidents in which Israeli patrols on the border have come under fire. In one such incident last week, the IDF took out a Syrian Army post with a guided missile after the Israeli side came under fire.

It was unclear whether the shooting from Syria was intentional or the result of ongoing skirmishes between troops loyal to the regime and mainly jihadist rebel groups.

Jihadists last month kidnapped 21 Filipino troops belonging to the United Nations Undof unit and, although they were released within three days, the peacekeepers have now dramatically scaled back their operations along the border.

“The Syrian army is large but for years it has been ill-prepared for war in Israel,” said a Syrian source with close connections to the Free Syrian Army. “The regime talked for all these years about the Israeli threat and the need to recapture the Golan Heights, but this was merely a justification for continuing conscription and for diverting a huge part of the country’s budget to the army. What they were actually doing was maintaining a main tool of internal repression.”

While some units, especially those made up of Allawite officers and soldiers, remain largely intact and loyal to Assad, the wider framework of the Syrian armed forces is in disarray.

The balance of power between the regime and the rebels is increasingly being determined by Assad’s foreign backers. The commander of Israel’s military intelligence, Major General Aviv Kochavi, estimated last month that as many as 50,000 Hizbollah soldiers are currently fighting for Assad, with the active assistance of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

While some rebel sources believe the actual number of Shia Lebanese in Syria is not that high, they agree that the foreigners have become a main reason for Assad’s survival.

In addition to the Lebanese and Iranians, there are growing reports of Shia fighters coming to Assad’s aid
from Iraq.

Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood official calls for 'holy jihad' against Israel

Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt Mohammed Badie said on Thursday that Arabs must deal with Israel “through holy Jihad, high sacrifices and all forms of resistance”.

In a public address, reported by Egyptian daily newspaper Al-Ahram, the leading official of the ruling political party said: “The time has come for the Islamic nation to unite around one man for the sake of Jerusalem and Palestine,”

He continued: “The Jews have dominated the land, spread corruption on earth, spilled the blood of believers and in their actions profaned holy places, including their own.”

“Zionists only understand the language of force and will not relent without duress,” said Mr Badie. “This will only happen through holy Jihad, high sacrifices and all forms of resistance. The day they realize we will march this path and raise the banner of Jihad for the sake of God, is the day they will relent and stop their tyranny.”

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi was a presidential candidate for the Muslim Brotherhood, but resigned from all official positions in the organisation when he took office. He has recently named an ambassador to Israel.

Mohammed Badie, 69, took office in January 2010. He has a degree in veterinary medicine from Cairo University, and in his youth was arrested for his political activity with the Muslim Brotherhood and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.

This is not the first time Mr Badie has spoken out against Israel, in a sermon in July he called Israelis “rapists” and called all Muslims to wage Jihad to free Jerusalem.

Rockets and mortar rounds fired from Gaza

More than 60 rockets and mortar rounds — the highest number since June — were fired from Gaza towards Israel over the Simchat Torah holiday following an Israeli strike on jihadist terrorists in the Strip.

The Israeli attack was carried out from the air in a joint IDF-Shin Bet operation last Sunday afternoon.
The targets, two World Jihad members, had been planning a large cross-border attack from Sinai on an Israeli target, according to Israeli sources.

The two men were targeted by a missile while riding a motorcycle in Rafah and were severely wounded. A Palestinian health authority spokesman said that eight other civilians were wounded in the blast.

Following the strike on Monday, members of the military wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad fired 55 rockets and mortar shells at Israel. There were no human casualties but a number of goats on a kibbutz were killed and damage was caused to building and cars. Seven more rockets were fired on Tuesday without causing any damage or harm.

In retaliation, the Israeli Air Force attacked Hamas positions and launch pads in the northern Gaza Strip, wounding five people.

Israeli security officials noted that, while Hamas has mainly kept out of the latest attacks and had promised the Egyptian government that it would not take part in any operations within Sinai, Hamas members were involved in this week’s rocket barrage against Israel. They explained that this was an attempt to avoid being seen as “less patriotic” than the Islamic Jihad movement.

Syria Islamists: 'next stop Israel'

As Bashar al-Assad fights for his survival, a new threat to Israel is crystallising across its northern borders.

What began in Syria as a limited but genuine people's uprising against a dictatorship has become contaminated with Saudi-funded foreign mujahideen who are driven, among other things, by an intense hostility toward non-Muslims - and an implacable hatred of Jews and Israel.

In Al Midan, a suburb in southern Damascus, Mateen, a fighter who claimed to have travelled from Afghanistan, shared his ideas for a post-Assad Syria: "We have to a build a society of respect and brotherhood in accordance with the Prophet's commandments," he said in Urdu. "We will treat non-Muslims kindly, but we have a big fight against the Jews ahead of us. We will take that up, God willing."

The threat to Israel comes not only from the large number of foreign jihadists currently amassing in Syria to take on Assad. Riyadh's monarchy is grooming Manaf Tlass as a possible replacement for Assad. A high-ranking official in the Syrian Arab Army and a once-close friend of Assad's, Tlass was seen as important enough to be smuggled out of Syria by French intelligence. Tlass has now adopted the vocabulary of the "moderate", but his family history should be of concern to Israelis.

Tlass's father, Mustafa, a former Sunni defence minister who wielded tremendous clout under Hafez Assad, is the author of The Matzah of Zion. Complete with a lurid cover depicting ravenous Jews draining the blood from the slit throat of a Christian priest, the book, a collage of discredited old documents, attempts to revive the blood libel. Tlass's cousin, Abdul Razzak, commands the notorious al-Farouq brigade of the opposition - the same outfit that expelled 80,000 Christians from Homs.

This view of an impending war with Israel was identical - almost word for word - to what Yahya Mujahid, a leader of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, the group charged with carrying out the Mumbai attacks in 2008, told me in Lahore in 2009: that the Lashkar-e-Taiba would take up the "fight" with the Jews after "liberating" Kashmir from Indian rule.

Neither Mujahid nor Mateen have ever met a Jew in their lives, although Mateen thought that Afghan president Hamid Karzai was "worse than a Jew".

However, both were united by a deep hatred that has been exported to their homelands by the Saudi Arabian theocracy.

In hijacking what could have matured into a genuinely inclusive people's uprising, Saudi Arabia has discredited this rebellion in the eyes of secular Syrians - the constituency that could, in a post-Assad Syria, play a role in building peace with Israel.

It is tragic that a Wahhabi monarchy that is pretending to be a friend of the West by observing peace with Israel while spreading noxious anti-Israeli ideologies throughout the Muslim world, is treated as a friend and ally by Western democracies.

Their victims so far have been Syria's Shiite and Christian minorities.

Regardless of the outcome of this war, the prospect of an Israeli settlement with Syria now looks dead.

Israeli soldier killed on Gaza border

An Israeli soldier has been killed after a Palestinian gunman crossed the border from Gaza early this morning.

The Palestinian was also killed after Israeli forces responded to his infiltration, which may have been made in an attempt to kidnap an IDF soldier.

Golani Staff-Sergeant Netanel Moshiashvili, a 21-year-old from Ashkelon, was named as the dead soldier by Israeli media. He was a member of the Golani Brigade 12th Battalion which was patrolling Israel’s southern borders.

In a statement the IDF said: “A terrorist who was identified infiltrating Israel from the southern Gaza Strip opened fire at IDF soldiers, who responded with fire. During the exchange of fire, the terrorist was killed, thus preventing a terror attack on Israeli civilians.”

IDF spokeswoman Avital Leibovich suggested Hamas was responsible for the attack, but no group has yet claimed responsibility. Other sources claimed the Palestinian gunman was a member of Islamic Jihad.

There were reports that Israeli forces responded to the killing by targeting a vehicle carrying three suspected terrorists in Gaza.

Camden Council giving al-Qaeda group freedom to preach

A leading local authority has refused to sever its links to a group which promotes the ideology of Osama bin Laden at a taxpayer-funded centre and encourages young Muslims to prepare for jihad.

Camden Council has repeatedly rejected the opportunity to take action over the Ministry of Dawah, which holds weekly lectures glorifying the al-Qaeda leader and extreme Islamist clerics such as Anwar al-Awlaki.

The Dawah group has been holding events at the Kings Cross Neighbourhood Centre in north London for more than two years.

The council has been asked to investigate the meetings and warned that in refusing to make a decision on the group's future it may be breaching the government’s Prevent counter-extremism guidelines.

Last year’s Prevent review included clear directives to local authorities, stating that “propagandists for terrorism and for ideologies taken up by terrorists should not be permitted to make use of publicly-owned venues” and that authorities “must be ready to take appropriate action”.

The Ministry of Dawah’s promotion of extreme Islamist organisations such as Hizb ut-Tahrir, and support for bin Laden and other al-Qaeda leaders on social networks and at the Kings Cross meetings, is in direct violation of those guidelines.

Events held by the group at the venue have included a “Maidens of Paradise” discussion about women, and “Deeds after Death” in which participants were told: “Did you know you can still get rewards even after your soul has departed from your body?”

A “Free Palestine” discussion asked participants to consider how “the Zionist Israeli state [is] using illegal weaponry such as white phosphorous to kill and murder innocent human beings including children”.

At another lecture the speaker tells the audience: “You are in a battle of ideas, a battle for hearts and minds, and it’s a battle that’s clearly about the West versus Islam.

“Your goal is to kick start [a] revival. It is to make sure that every single Muslim is talking about how we need to unite, how we will seek our progress with Islam alone. You know what to do, you know the work that is yours. You must publicly call for this.

“Realise my brothers you are part of this battle for hearts and minds and the battle will come to your door and you have to make a decision on what you are going to do.”

One lecturer claimed Israeli snipers were used to kill Palestinian children in Gaza and talked about his hope that Muslims would be able to pray at the Al-Aqsa Mosque with “no Israel, no occupation at all”.

“We should have the courage to say it here among Muslims. At work with non-Muslim colleagues and friends it is hard to say because they think ‘what are you going to do, wipe all these people out?’. No, we are going to return justice for the Palestinians. That is the aim,” he tells the young audience.

There is a further discussion on how Israel will be “wiped off the earth” by Allah.

The Ministry of Dawah claims to provide “activities and Islamic circles for youth, dealing with our issues, on the level, in a way we can understand. We hope to engage, entertain and excite”.

The centre is run by the King’s Cross Brunswick Neighbourhood Association (KCBNA), whose chief executive, Nasim Ali, was also the leader of the council until earlier this year. The council was the KCBNA’s biggest funder in 2010 and 2011.

Hasan Afzal, director of the anti-extremism group Stand for Peace, contacted the council earlier this month to warn that the Ministry of Dawah was using the centre to “whitewash the terrorist convictions of a number of Islamists”.

New council leader Sarah Haywood said in a statement this week that the KCBNA must take responsibility for the matter.

She said the council was aware of the concerns about the Ministry of Dawah and had encouraged KCBNA to “consider and review” its hosting of the organisation.

“Ultimately this is a decision for the KCBNA. We trust that they will make an informed decision,” said Cllr Haywood.

The council said it "always" followed the government's counter-extremism guidelines.

Mr Ali said he had been informed about the concerns last week and that the centre was now taking the issue “very seriously”.

“I have asked the council to give us the evidence. The Ministry of Dawah is an occasional hirer [of the room] and they did not tell the centre what they were going to be speaking about,” he said.

“Our trustees are looking into it to see if there is enough evidence to stop them hiring the centre. We hope the police will look into whether they might be promoting extremism.”

Mr Ali said that when he informed the Ministry of Dawah about the trustees’ investigation, the group had been “quite aggravated that these allegations have been made and said there was no evidence to back it up”.

He admitted that he was not aware how long the group had been using the centre, and said he had never attended any of the lectures.

Mr Afzal said: “It’s extraordinary that a council which witnessed terrorism in July 2005 has been so slow and unnecessarily politically correct to the extent that it is ignoring government guidelines which are there to protect Muslims and non-Muslims from non-violent extremism.

“If Camden Council is not doing its job then it is in violation of its duty of care to its residents.”

Extremists arrested in France as Toulouse gunman Merah buried

Nineteen suspected extremists have been arrested in a crackdown in France as the country reacts to the worst attack on the Jewish community in decades.

President Nicolas Sarkozy, currently campaigning for re-election, told French radio: "It's in connection with a form of Islamist radicalism.” A police official told Associated Press that the arrests were not connected with the investigation of a spate of Islamist murders in Toulouse.

Mr Sarkozy said that the police would continue efforts which would “allow us to expel from our national territory a certain number of people who have no reason to be here.

"It's our duty to guarantee the security of the French people. We have no choice. It's absolutely indispensable.” The arrests came as Mohammed Merah, the gunman who killed four people at the Ozer Hatorah Jewish school in Toulouse last week and three paratroopers before that, was buried in a cemetery outside Toulouse.

Merah’s Algerian father had requested that the killer be buried in his family plot in the north African country, but it is understood that Algerian officials refused permission. Toulouse mayor Pierre Cohen also objected to the gunman being buried in the city.

Al-Qaida making Islamic jihad cartoon to inspire children

Move over Foreskin Man; there's a new cartoon warrior in town.

Al-Qaida has revealed members are working on a cartoon to inspire children to follow the path of Islamic jihad.

The film, claimed to be in the final stages of development, will include lessons in the history of the terrorist network and "facts" about those who have gone against Islam. It was described as an alternative to "the poison" of other television programmes.

The project, tentatively titled Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula , was announced on an Arabic-language website. The plot description said it would feature a "very exciting story" and inform young viewers about "who let down the Islamic religion and the Prophet, and how the Arab leaders are agents of the West".

The statement said the cartoon would include live action footage of raids and assassinations and real examples of the "heroic actions" of the mujahedeen.

"It aims to catalyse the youth and the children to follow the steps of Islamic jihadist figures," the statement continued. "This movie is a religious effort to educate our sons and youth about how to live a noble life under the shade of the Sharia."

Noman Benotman, a senior analyst at extremism monitor Quilliam, said the planned film represented a shift in the organisation's attitude to the media and to recruitment.

He warned that such efforts to "make terrorism exciting to young people and even to children" should be recognised as ways for al-Qaida to influence those who did not read newspapers or attend political events.

Mr Benotman suggested that Muslim democrats adopted the same methods to improve "grassroots understanding" of society. But he said the cartoon could also backfire and hinted at al-Qaida's recruitment difficulties. "The al-Qaida brand is discredited and it is not clear that gimmicks like this will be enough to save it," he said.

Cartoons have been employed by other extremist groups in recent years as ways to influence children or transmit political messages.

In April 2010 Hamas released a cartoon film showing Gilad Shalit – the soldier kidnapped by members of the terrorist group in June 2006 – in a coffin.

In 2007 there was outrage when it emerged Palestinian children were being shown programmes featuring a cartoon mouse called Farfar, who bore a striking resemblance to Disney's Mickey Mouse but who sang about world domination, resistance and guns.
