ASHLEY Stokes had mixed emotions after a career-best finish at the ping pong World Championship.

Stokes won three matches before bowing out at the last 16 stage to Russian two-time winner Maxim Shmyrev at Alexandra Palace.

Burnt-Oak based Stokes, 26, eclipsed his previous best in the annual tournament won by defending champion Andrew Baggaley, who pocketed the £13,200 top prize.


Stokes ready to sparkle at World Championships of Ping Pong

Ashley Stokes is looking to move up the rankings in the World Championship of ping pong.

Burnt Oak-based Stokes, 26, begins his title assault at Alexandra Palace today.

Defending champion Andrew Baggaley is favourite but Stokes aims to eclipse his previous best in the annual tournament.

He said: “I’d love to win it and that’s the ultimate aim.

JCC Games latest news

Team Maccabi GB have made a flying start to the JCC Games in Fort Lauderdale.

Joe Kaye and Nathan Sonn secured bronze in the U14 Team event in Table Tennis.

Dylan Goldstein and Oliver Adler WIN Bronze in 15-16 Table Tennis Team Competition.

Rachel Ayrton won double bronze in the U16 Swimming competition, with Jacob Steinberg finishing third in the 200m relay.

Highlights saw Sam Cohen win silver in the Ladies Singles Tennis final, the U16 and 18 Futsal teams in action, while the Open Football squad were beaten in the semi-finals against Germany.

Marom at his majestic best, while Mencer makes a big impression

Top seed Rafi Marom won the Maccabi GB Men's Open title at the London Academy in Edgware.

Marom was the outstanding performer in a field of 32 players. He was pushed all the way in his semi-final victory over Dov Katz before overcoming Jeremy Banks 3-0 in the final.

Jack Josephs edged home 11-9 in the deciding game of the Junior Boys Singles final against Matthew Gold.
