GB players unite in memory of Seltzer

Players from the Maccabi Great Britain team are in action this weekend in an exhibition match against SSE National League 3 side Barking RFC.

The contest is expected to be the first of an annual fixture to commemorate former Maccabi GB player Jonathan ‘Jock’ Seltzer who died of pancreatic cancer in June, 2010, aged 56.


Katz and Henry impress

Sam Katz and Jake Henry guided England Students to a memorable 30-16 victory over the Portugal national team.

The Maccabiah stars scored 25 out of England’s 30 points against the team placed 22nd in the IRB World Rankings.

Fly-half Katz led the way with 15 points, consisting of a try, two penalties and two conversions, while winger Henry went over the line twice.


Holland end Israel's World Cup aspirations

Ra’anan Penn says Israel were outclassed as they saw their hopes of qualifying for the 2015 World Cup quashed by a rampant Holland team at the Wingate Institute in Netanya.

Israel, who play in Division 2B of the European Championships, were blown away by the Division 2A leaders, with the visitors cruising to a 52-8 victory.


Israel ready for Dutch test

The Maccabiah champions will be boosted by the recent week’s 18-6 victory over Serbia in Belgrade, which consolidated its position at the top of Europe’s Division 2B.


Radley joins his Czech mates

Aaron Radley expressed pride after making his debut for the Czech Republic in the 60-17 friendly defeat against Germany in Heidelberg.

A star of the Team GB squad at the last two Maccabiot in Israel, Radley qualifies to play for the Czechs as his grandmother was born in Prague and he meets the IRB player eligibility rules.

Just over a year ago David Nash began his association as a cricket coach with Maccabi GB by promising "to bring home the bacon".

It was perhaps not the most diplomatic expression to use in the circumstances, but the sentiment was well meant and in the end proved to be correct.


GB Rugby boys on track for Israel

Maccabi GB’s Open Rugby Squad put in a resounding performance to see off Saxons RFC 47-31 on Sunday in their latest warm-up game before the 19th Maccabiah Games.

The side was made up of 16 players who are part of Team GB’s squad for Israel this summer, with five guest substitutes.


Spurling on top of the world

Scott Spurling was this week celebrating international glory after helping the England under-20 team win the IRB Junior World Championship.

The dual-registered Saracens and Bedford Blues hooker played the last 11 minutes of the final as England completed a stirring comeback to beat Wales 23-15 at Stade de la Rabine in Vannes, France.


GB going for Maccabiah gold

Team GB will be going for gold when they line up in the Open Rugby competition at the 19th Maccabiah Games in Israel next month.

The squad will be managed by Jon Tyler, the Maccabi GB Rugby chairman and manager, in what will be his fifth Maccabiah as player or manager.
