Peled: Maccabiah not far off Olympics

The largest-ever Maccabiah Games will officially start next Thursday at a gala opening ceremony in front of 32,000 spectators at Jerusalem’s newly enlarged Teddy Stadium.

More than 9,000 participants will compete in 46 sports, in Junior Open, Masters and Paralympic categories.


Team GB ready for lift-off

The GB Head of Delegation says there is an overriding feeling of excitement throughout the 443-strong squad, the majority of whom will fly to Ben Gurion Airport on Sunday.

Maccabi GB's Maccabiah Masters over-35's completed their training for the 19th Maccabiah Games with a three-day camp in Spain, based at the outstanding Marbella Football Centre in Spain.


Cubans filter in for Maccabiah

The first overseas athletes have started to arrive in Israel ahead of the Maccabiah Games.

Siblings Rafael and Roxana Gonzales flew into Ben Gurion airport yesterday. The archers are from Cuba who are competing at the Games for the first time. The delegation will also participate in table tennis, softball, karate and futsal.


Five-star GB tear Cheshunt apart

Team GB warmed up for the Open Football competition at the 19th Maccabiah Games with a 5-2 victory over Cheshunt FC in a friendly.

David Pollock’s troops came from a goal down to run out worthy winners. A Jordan Marks strike was sandwiched in between two Cheshunt goals, but GB then stepped up a gear, with Adam Bolle making it 2-2 after good work from James Gershfield.


We’re on the top table, says Katz

While Team GB has high hopes for Table Tennis at the 19th Maccabiah Games, the event will do well to surpass the 2009 event for Dov Katz.

The joint-manager was going for gold in Israel four years ago, but returned home with much more.
He met his wife, Perry, and they now have a 15-month-old son, James. "These Games will be an emotional one for me," said Katz.


GB Rugby boys on track for Israel

Maccabi GB’s Open Rugby Squad put in a resounding performance to see off Saxons RFC 47-31 on Sunday in their latest warm-up game before the 19th Maccabiah Games.

The side was made up of 16 players who are part of Team GB’s squad for Israel this summer, with five guest substitutes.


Warner 'ready' for Maccabiah

Maccabiah-bound Adam Warner finished 25th out of 88 in a high quality field at the international German open water championships in Duisburg.

Competing in the 5k event, Warner produced a strong performance against some of the top swimmers in Europe.


Aston to lead Israel's Maccabiah cricket challenge

The Israel squad for the 19th Maccabiah to be held in Israel from July 18–30 has been announced.

Raymond Aston, a veteran of the national team who made his debut back in the ICC Trophy in Kenya in 1994, takes over as captain from Herschel Gutman, allowing the latter to concentrate on his dual responsibilities of player and coach.


My wildest dream just came true

I may not have won the £157m Euromillions lottery this week, but being called up to represent Team GB at next month’s Maccabiah Games is simply beyond my wildest dreams.

This all appeared little more than a pipe dream 12 months ago when I was lying on a hospital bed following surgery, but I like a challenge …
