Maccabiah 2013 review: GB Junior Cricket

Team GB took silver at the 19th Maccabiah Games after succumbing to defending champions South Africa in a three-team tournament.

Wonderful Weitzman steers GB to bronze

An inspired spell of bowling from Saul Weitzman guided Team GB to bronze in the Open Cricket competition following a heated third place playoff match against India in Lod.

Having claimed back-to-back victories over Canada and Australia, GB had just missed out on a place in the final on run-rate after five of the six teams finished level on 12 points.

Golden boys spot-on in final

They made history just by reaching the final. But the Team GB Under 16s football boys went one better by winning gold after defeating favourites Israel 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out.

The pundits had predicted that the GB boys faced a thrashing, predicting 6-0, maybe 7-0 when they kicked-off.

Medals galore for GB in Maccabiah finale

They were written off from the start — told they would be “massacred” if they reached the final against favourites Israel.

But Team GB’s Under-16 soccer stars defied all odds to claim gold and make Maccabiah Games history by defeating Israel 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out.

And their efforts epitomised the spirit of everyone in Team GB in a glorious two weeks of sporting excellence.

Gershfield and Bolle take GB into last eight

TEAM GB have powered their way into the Open quarter-finals with a 2-1 win over South Africa on Tuesday.

Anything less than victory would have seen them exit the competition prematurely but it was nailbiting stuff right to the end when South Africa converted a penalty with just seven minutes to go.

Mixed fortunes for the Masters

TEAM GB Masters 35s kicked-off their campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over a typically resilient USA side. But from then on it went downhill with defeats by Brazil and Israel before rallying on Tuesday with a 3-0 defeat of Chile.

USA took the lead against the run of play on 55 minutes with a stunner from 30 yards finding the top corner.

GB stars flying the flag

A Maccabiah gold medal hero and a 17-year-old debutante had the honour of carrying the flags for Team GB at Thursday’s 19th Maccabiah Games gala opening ceremony in front of 32,000 spectators at Jerusalem’s newly enlarged Teddy Stadium.
