An emotional return for son of tragic Aussie

Australia has always led the parade at the Maccabiah Games opening ceremony, and since the 1997 disaster when four of its participants were killed after the collapse of the Yarkon river bridge into the Ramat Gan stadium, extra emotion has been added to the appearance of the first squad alphabetically.

The first few days at the 19th Maccabiah Games have been something quite special.

Two days at pre-camp featured some incredible sights, as the majority of the 453-strong Team GB squad converged on Jerusalem.


Super Sunday for Team GB

Team GB produced a stunning streak on Sunday to secure 11 medals at the 19th Maccabiah Games in Israel.

There were four gold medals including a historic first ever triumph in the boy’s under-16 football tournament, which came following a tense penalty shoot-out win over Israel.


Athletes strike gold in Israel for Great Britain

Great Britain hit gold at the end of the first week of the Maccabiah Games 2013.

Sprinter Ellie Edwards won the junior girl’s 200m, Sam Shindler-Glass the junior boys 800m and golfer Tracy Capal claimed the master’s women’s net event.

Team GB also claimed silver medals in the master’s judo, boy’s javelin, fencing team sabre and boy’s 1500m track event.


Team GB on top of the world at Maccabiah Games

It has been a spectacular day for Great Britain’s Maccabiah team.

This morning, Chloe Jacobs, Hollie Fisher, Rachel Ayrton and Elisha Kramer won bronze in the girls' 4x100m individual medley.

Celebrations increased as Ellie Edwards won a bronze in the girls' 200m sprint and Sam Shindler-Glass delivered a silver medal in the boys' 1500m race.


Eight medals and climbing for Team GB

Team GB have made a strong start in an enthralling 19th Maccabiah Games in Israel with an eight medal haul.

With Israel and the US, the two biggest teams, battling out for top place in the medal table, British participants have also been frequently seen on the podium with medals won in fencing, badminton, rowing and swimming in the early days of competition.


GB humbled by India

Team failed to build on their opening day win over Sputh Africa after suffering a disappointing seven-wicket defeat against India at Hadar Yosef.

With Benjamin Lederman - the hero of match one out injured, Saul Weitzman and Joe Williams came in, with Yoav Lebens sitting it out in the only other change.


GB Open cricket stun South Africa

Team GB Open Cricket made a sensational start to the 19th Maccabiah Games in Israel with a 43-run win over defending champions South Africa in Lod, thanks in large to brilliant performances from Marc Reingold and young bowler Benjamin Lederman.


Peled: Maccabiah not far off Olympics

The largest-ever Maccabiah Games will officially start next Thursday at a gala opening ceremony in front of 32,000 spectators at Jerusalem’s newly enlarged Teddy Stadium.

More than 9,000 participants will compete in 46 sports, in Junior Open, Masters and Paralympic categories.
