Wingate's Craig Ellis' testimonial dinner

Craig Ellis, one of Jewish football's great stalwarts, was described as a "great leader of men" by former Charlton Athletic manager Les Reed, on the night 150 people attended his testimonial dinner.

Reed, who worked with Ellis as head coach of last year's GB football squad at the Maccabiah, was one of several high-profile figures at the dinner, which included a question and answer session with Tony Adams.

AC Whetstone top of Under 13 Division One

AC Whetstone went top of the Under 13 Division One after inflicting HMH Purple’s first defeat in a nine-goal thriller.

David Clements, Sam Grossman, Alex Woffenden, Joshua Silverman and Jonah Gordon Boyd netted for Whestone. Hendon Hawks A overcame HMH Blue to reach the Under 10 Challenge Cup final.

Josh Weiler plus an extra time winner from Joel Gottlieb set up a final against HISHU Blue on March 21.

Spurs' Harry Redknapp: There’s no good young players

Harry Redknapp, the Spurs manager, has expressed his fears for the future of the English game.

He told a Jewish Care business breakfast: “Good, young British footballers are a dying breed. We’re seeing more and more foreign players and foreign owners. Soon it will come to the point where every Premiership club has foreign players and owners. They come from a background where they are all winners but the only problem is that there can only be one winner.

Nathan named GB Junior manager for Euro Games

Joel Nathan will manage Team GB’s junior football team at next year’s European Maccabi Games in Vienna.

Nathan has been involved in junior Maccabi football for more than 10 years and led the Under 16 squad at last summer’s Maccabiah Games.

Greg Bookman, manager of Redbridge Jewish Care A, will assistant Nathan. The former Wingate & Finchley player is widely regarded as one of the best young Jewish coaches on the circuit, having worked with a number of Professional Academies.

Peters appointed GB manager for EMFT

Phil Peters, manager of UJS Norstar A, has been appointed manager of Team GB, who will be looking to retain their European Maccabi Football Trophy competition in Torremolinos in May.

Peters and his assistant Jamie Slavin will spearhead the squad at the fifth European EMFT from the May 27-30 that will see teams from a number of Maccabi organisations all over Europe take part in a 'festival of football'.

Maccabi Lions Under 15s victory

London Maccabi Lions Under 15s continued their climb up the Watford Friendly League table with a 3-1 victory over Northwood.

Lions forged ahead when Adam Arnold slotted home a penalty. Zak Skry doubled the lead early in the second half after rising to head home a Danny Berschader corner.

Northwood pulled one back but Jamie Nagioff clinched the points.

Striker Jack Miller provided a brace of well-taken goals as the Lions Under Nine's move three points clear at the top after thumping Hemel Hempstead in the West Herts League.

I recently read that the league is 'in crisis' due to the demise of several teams this season. Nothing could be further from the truth. The purpose of the league is to provide football for the community and are here to serve the teams. In short we are here for the benefit of the teams and not the other way round.

Faithfold 5-4 North London Raiders

Faithfold player-coach James Bloom insisted Daryl Phillips is still "among the best finishers in Jewish football" after his four goals won a nine-goal thriller against North London Raiders.

Running the show in this Maccabi Masters Division One contest alongside his MSFL colleagues Zuriel Solomon and David Garson, Phillips' speed over five yards and opportunism proved too much for a Raiders team who until recently still harboured title ambitions.

Cole names JC MSFL Rep team against Turkey

Jamie Cole, manager of the JC MSFL Rep team, has named a 21-man squad for next week's London Inter-League Cup opener against the Turkish Federation League.

Ahead of next Thursday evening's match at Brimsdown Rovers FC in Enfield, Cole said: "We've never beaten this team in this competition so there's a massive incentive for players."

Daniel Stanton has been named captain. London Maccabi Lions defender Louis Basger missed out on a place as he is unavailable. Brady Maccabi striker Paul Hakim, who is the only player from outside the Premier Division is doubtful due to injury.

Israel beats Romania in friendly

Goals from Yossi Benayoun and Elyaniv Barda earned Israel a 2-0 victory over Romania in Elyaniv Barda in an international friendly on Wednesday night.

In a match featuring two sides who failed to qualify for this summer’s World Cup, it was captain Benayoun who put the visitors ahead on the stroke of half time. Collecting the ball deep inside his own half, the Liverpool midfielder played a one-two before skipping between three Romanian defenders before coolly slotting into the corner of the net.
