Interview: USA World Cup star Jonathan Bornstein

Five years after competing at the 17th Maccabiah Games, USA left-back Jonathan Bornstein is relishing the prospect of locking horns with Wayne Rooney and co when he lines up against England tomorrow night.

Bornstein, 25, is one of 23 American players who have the added incentive of earning a bonus of £617,000 should the team ranked 14th in the world win the competition. The £13 million payout was negotiated by Washington lawyer Mark Levinstein.

Grant confirmed as West Ham manager

Avram Grant has secured a work permit to start work as manager of West Ham.

Mr Grant, 55, agreed a four-year contract last week to succeed Gianfranco Zola

“I’m proud and honoured to be the manager of West Ham,” said Grant, who has been on holiday with Tzofit in Austria. “It's an exciting challenge and I'm ready to do my best.”

The Israeli has already begun the task of strengthening the West Ham squad, signing German midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger.

Basger wins MSFL Player of the Year

London Maccabi Lions earned a win double at the JC MSFL end of season awards on Monday night with two players scooping the top individual awards.

Defender Louis Basger won Player of the Year while midfielder Yoav Lebens claimed the Young Player title.

'Yellow River' singer's World Cup bid

A top songwriter hopes to spur on England's footballers by adapting a version of his classic 70s hit as a World Cup anthem.

Jeff Christie's Yellow River topped the charts in 26 countries, including three weeks in the UK.

Now it is being re-released under the title Hat Trick of Lions on Monday, refreshed with a ska beat, a rap and a new chorus: "Come on England".

There may be no official English theme song, but Christie hopes the team will remain in the tournament long enough for the song to catch on.

Keterman lifts NW Neasden

A four-goal blast from TJ Keterman helped North West Neasden B clinch the runners-up spot in Division One after they demolished Brady Maccabi 8-1.

Needing a draw to finish behind champions North London Raiders A, Keterman put Neasden ahead early on. Lee Platt levelled things up with a sublime strike from 35 yards but Keterman soon restored Neasden's advantage, completing a first-half hat-trick. Bradley Sharpe, Ryan Sher, Alex Bowman, Nicky Skone and Keterman completed the rout.

NWN joint-manager Sammy Carr said: "We blew the league ourselves but are now back where we belong."

The writing was on the wall for Nazareth long before their 7-0 capitulation to Hapoel Ramat Gan on a remarkable last day of the Israeli season. Relegation was assured a week before, but the signs had not looked good for a while.

Teetering on bankruptcy, losing heavily every week on the pitch whilst enduring the racism that follows clubs like Bnei Sakhnin, who proudly claim an Israeli-Arab identity, it had been a miserable season.

But there was one shining light, one that has enthralled fans, not to mention the media: the tongue-in-cheek stoicism of their English manager.

MSFL Rep team stripped of cup and manager sacked

● Rep Team boss sacked after fielding ineligible players● His players are told to give back the cup and medals
● The league is fined and warned about its conduct

The MSFL Rep Team's recent London Inter-Cup success has been wiped from the record books after they were found guilty of fielding ineligible players in the final and ordered to return the trophy.

As revealed on May 21, MSFL chairman David Wolff reported the Rep team after Sam Sloma and Aron Barnes played in the 3-2 victory. Prior to the decision, the MSFL management committee dismissed Jamie Cole as Rep team manager.

It's been another long, hard season but we got there in the end. London Lions, North West Neasden A and London Maccabi Lions were the top dogs down south, while up north, Haroldeans and Oakhill Lions added silverware to their trophy cabinets.

Grant confirmed as West Ham manager

West Ham this morning confirmed the appointment of Avram Grant on a four-year contract, subject to being granted a work permit.

As reported, Grant, the former Israel and Chelsea manager, will join the club fresh from leading Portsmouth to the FA Cup final. He was unable to save them from relegation after they went into administration and incurred a nine-point deduction.

Ahead of being officially unveiled later this month, Grant said: “I am proud and honoured to be the manager of West Ham. It will be an exciting challenge and I am ready to do my best.
