Dean Furman went wild in the aisles after securing his place in South Africa’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Oldham Athletic captain was out doing the grocery shopping when he was inundated with messages and tweets congratulating him on being selected for the tournament in the land of his birth.

Tal Ben Haim is on the verge of joining QPR on loan for the rest of the season, manager Harry Redknapp has confirmed.

The Israeli defender, 30, has been a free agent since leaving Portsmouth in August and Redknapp is keen to add the experienced Ben Haim to his squad who last night boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation with a 1-0 victory over Chelsea.

D-day looms for injured Benayoun

Yossi Benayoun has returned to Chelsea after his loan spell at West Ham ended prematurely due to injury.

Benayoun’s agent Ronen Katsav says that the midfielder will use the period of rest to consider his next move.

“The first priority is to get Yossi fit and we hope by the end of the month he’ll be healthy and we can weigh up his options for the January window,” Katsav said.


Euro U21 Championships schedule confirmed

Uefa this week confirmed the schedule for next year’s under-21 Championships, with hosts Israel kicking off the tournament against Norway in Petah Tikva on June 5.

Israel’s second match takes place against Italy at Bloomfield three days later, when group rivals England play Norway in Netanya.
