Unlucky Lions beaten in extra time

London Lions 2 AET

It was a case of so close yet so far as London Lions were defeated 3-2 by Hoddesdon Town in the last couple of minutes of extra-time.

Other than the first 30 minutes of the game, this was a match Lions dominated in terms of possession, chances and fitness. Harsh lessons can be learned against opposition from higher leagues and Lions will have learned a lot about themselves after this match.

Three points, three goals, 3G for Raiders

North London Raiders B laid down a promotion gauntlet to their Division Two rivals with a dominant 3-0 victory over rivals Neasden C on the third-generation pitch at Brunel University, Uxbridge.

After a pulsating first half Raiders clinched victory with three goals in twenty minutes leaving Neasden shell-shocked and Raiders jubilant.

Coming off the back of a hard-fought 1-0 win over Rapid Banta two weeks previously, L’Orange made it two clean sheets in a row, with a display full of poise, craft and determination.

Lions keep title hopes alive

London Maccabi Lions A overcame Faithfold by the odd goal in seven in Division One, with Immanuel Ezekiel (2), Adam Brand and Adam Lee giving them a 4-3 win. Adam Barton (2) and Jason Rich replied for Faithfold.

Glenthorne A saw off EDRS Stonegrove with Jason Levy, Adam Lennard and Sid Shaw contributing to a 3-1 win, and an own goal providing the solitary consolation for EDRS.

Yossi's friendly fire

A 76th minute strike from captain Yossi Benayoun gave Israel victory in an international friendly against Hungary in Ramat Gan on Wednesday night.

With temperatures dipping as low as 11 degrees, the Liverpool midfield diverted Omer Golan’s shot into the net.

The Liverpool midfielder made amends for shooting over an easy chance just three minutes before the goal. Roberto Colautti should also have scored in the 39th minute when he headed a simple chance over the bar.

A new amateur football body has been set up that could help fast-track talented young Jewish players into the professional game.

The Non League Football Association enables players to take charge of their careers. Players register their details including a profile and playing history, before joining a website database accessible to prospective teams and managers.

Set up by Newport County manager Dean Holdsworth and directors Clive Pollard and Tony Marks, the NLFA also offers discounts on football boots, kit and merchandise.

Katan puts Haifa clear

Maccabi Haifa moved six points clear at the top of the Israeli Premier Division after beating Hakoah Maccabi Amidar 2-0. Former West Ham striker Yaniv Katan and Gustavo Boccoli earned them their 11th victory in 19 matches.

Nearest challengers Maccabi Netanya needed a late strike from Snir Geuta to claim a point at Bnei Yehuda. Eliran Atar had opened the scoring.

Haim Megrelashvili and Scott Sealy were on the mark as Maccabi Tel Aviv won 2-1 at Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona. Guy Tzarfati replied.

Cup games in fixture log-jam

The JC Cyril Anekstein Cup has been put on hold after the cold snap forced all but one scheduled match in Jewish football to be postponed last weekend.

For the first time in 46 years, the entire MSFL programme featuring 24 league and cup matches was wiped out with pitches deemed unfit as a result of the snow, frozen surfaces and waterlogging.

Wingate beaten by leaders

Despite being the better side for the large majority of the game, Wingate & Finchley eventually lost out to table-toppers Aveley.

The Blues attacked right from the very start; in a crowded box Chris Chase almost scored a spectacular goal with a deft back-heel but he narrowly missed the target.

Craig Ellis then had a free header from a deep corner, but his goalbound effort was cleared off the goalline.

Grant favourite to replace Adams at Pompey

Avram Grant is the 6/4 favourite to replace Tony Adams as manager of Portsmouth.

Adams was sacked on Sunday night, following the 3-2 defeat against Liverpool.

A Portsmouth spokesman said: "The priority is for Portsmouth football club to remain in the top flight and we feel the appointment of a new manager will give us the best opportunity to enable us to do this."

Pinner win

Pinner JFC Under 11s reached the final of the Watford Friendly League seven-a-side Challenge Cup after beating Oakhill Tigers Falcons 7-0.

Goals from Ben Graham (3), George Weston (2), Jeremy Ben-Nathan and Maxim Green set up a match against Eastbury Farm on May 10.
