Guttman fears for Israel's World Cup mission impossible

Eli Guttman insists that Israel has been given its toughest ever challenge in the World Cup 2018 qualifiers.

Guttman was in Russia to see Israel paired with European heavyweights Spain and Italy in Group G.

Albania - who beat Portugal last year - along with Macedonia and minnows Lichtenstein make up the group.


European Maccabi Games - Day One review

Team Maccabi GB are in action in Open Futsal, Open Football, Masters Futsal and Tennis on Day One at the 14th European Maccabi Games in Berlin today.

Andy Landesberg expressed delight after Team Maccabi GB opened their account with a 13-1 demolition of France, with Russell Goldstein and Alfie Brooks scoring four apiece.

Eli Guttman insists Israel have been drawn into possibly the toughest World Cup qualifying group after they were paired with former world champions Spain and Italy in their bid to reach Russia 2018.

Having seen their hopes of automatic qualification deteriorate after a strong start, Guttman would have been hoping for a favourable draw, but he admits Israel have it all to do now.

It will be a poignant occasion for many people for many different reasons. Having covered previous EMGs in Stirling, Antwerp, Rome and Vienna, this one will be extra special for me too as I visit the hometown of my late father for the first time.

The format was criticised by teams from London after an overhaul at the beginning of last season, with former winners Faithfold withdrawing after being paired a team from the Manchester Jewish Soccer League in the early rounds.
