Even if you do not like sport you cannot help but be immersed in the European Maccabi Games, which commence in Berlin on Tuesday.

It will be a poignant occasion for many people for many different reasons. Having covered previous EMGs in Stirling, Antwerp, Rome and Vienna, this one will be extra special for me too as I visit the hometown of my late father for the first time.

Peter Morrison Trophy to remain national from round one

This season’s Peter Morrison Trophy will remain a national competition from round one, organisers have announced.

The format was criticised by teams from London after an overhaul at the beginning of last season, with former winners Faithfold withdrawing after being paired a team from the Manchester Jewish Soccer League in the early rounds.

David Wolff admits he is deeply concerned about the future of the MGBSFL after only 34 teams registered for the forthcoming season.

Former champions North West Neasden are the biggest casualties, while AC Whetstone, Jewdinese, King Crown, KS Reunited and Shacharit Donetsk have also disbanded, which means the league has been restructured with just three divisions.

Blizzard Storm and Camden Park have profited from the new format and accepted the offer of promotion into the Premier Division.
