A Holocaust survivor who addressed the England football squad about his time in Auschwitz has called for a clampdown on racism at Euro 2012, which is being staged in Poland and Ukraine.

Zigi Shipper, 82, joined Ben Helfgott, 81, at a session with the players and manager Roy Hodgson at The Grove in Hertfordshire.

Israel's hopes of qualifying for the 2012 European Championship finals are over after they were beaten 3-1 by Croatia in Zagreb on Tuesday night.

Having lost 1-0 at home to Greece on Saturday, Luis Fernandez's troops knew that nothing less than a win at the Stadion Maksimir would keep alive their hopes in Group F.

A second-half strikes from Sotirios Ninis was all that separated the teams at the Bloomfield Stadium.

Supersub Ben Haim puts Israel back in contention

A second-half strike from supersub Tal Ben Haim lifted Israel to joint-second in Euro 2012 qualifying Group F as they overcame Georgia at the Bloomfield Stadium.

Having beaten Latvia 2-1 on Saturday, Luis Fernandez's men ran out deserved winners in a match that featured the comeback of captain Yossi Benayoun following a lengthy injury lay-off.


Kayal late show keeps Israel alive

An 81st minute strike from Biram Kayal kept Israel's hopes of qualifying for the Euro 2012 finals alive as they overcame Latvia in Tel Aviv.

Luis Fernandez's men forged ahead in what was a must-win game after 16 minutes when striker Elyaniv Barda fired home.

But the Bloomfield Stadium was thrown into a stunned silence just after the hour when Latvia captain Kaspars Gorkass equalised.

Two first-half strikes from Spurs’ midfielder Niko Kranjčar helped Croatia move two points clear at the top of Euro 2012 qualifying Group F as they beat Israel 2-1 at the Ramat Gan National Stadium.

Israel went into the game without captain Yossi Benayoun and Celtic midfielder Biram Kayal as the absence was felt as the visitors took the game by the scruff of the neck in the first 45 minutes.

The hosts were given an early warning when Ivan Rakitić fired a shot against the base of the post inside seven minutes.


Benayoun blow for Israel

Yossi Benayoun has been ruled out of Israel’s crucial Euro 2012 qualifiers against Croatia and Greece after scans revealed he requires surgery on an Achilles injury.

The Chelsea star is set to be out of action for several months and joins Celtic midfielder Berem Kayal on missing the upcoming fixtures.

Benayoun sustained a calf injury in last month’s Carling Cup defeat by Newcastle but had made encouraging progress after undergoing placenta treatment in Serbia.

EURO 2012 Israel began a new era under Frenchman Luis Fernandez with four points from its opening two matches in the Euro 2012 qualifiers.

A 3-1 victory over Malta was followed by a goalless draw in Georgia to leave them second in Group F behind Croatia on goal difference.

Captain Yossi Benayoun looked to the positives from the stalemate in Tblisi. "This was the kind of game we would have lost in the past against a poor team who were playing better than us. Now we face Croatia. They will be favourites but we can win."
