Glory for Gate as Nomads roll over

Southgate moved to within one point of top spot in the Maccabi Sunday League, following an 86-run win over Casual Nomads.

A low-scoring contest saw Smokler and Morris make a fluent start until Nomads’ young left-arm spinner, Peter Sulzbachern, changed the game.

Turning the ball in both directions, he accounted for the last five wickets in quick succession as Southgate were dismissed for 150.

Youngsters show great character

CRICKET Team GB’s Maccabiah juniors gave a good account of themselves in a warm-up match against Middlesex Sunday League Division One Harrow St Mary’s 1st.

Against experienced players, GB were soon up against it as HSM raced to 170-2 off 22 overs. Matters improved immensely as in the past 18 overs GB conceded 100 runs and took seven wickets. Daniel Cohen and Seb Schusman claimed two wickets apiece with Jacob Reza, Jordan Godden, Huddy Lieberman and Josh Hershowitz also taking scalps as HSM closed on 270-9.

Southgate back in the race as champions MAL-function

League title race was blown wide open after Southgate inflicted a first competitive defeat in two years on defending champions MAL.
Put in to bat on a good wicket with short boundaries, Southgate made a fluent start and good partnerships throughout saw Southgate post a highly respectable 210-8 from their 40 overs with Ashley Smokler (49) top scoring.

MAL’s reply got off to the worst possible start, losing the highly talented Avi Kestenbaum and Tony Wise early, both to opening bowler Rob Apple.

Super siblings head over heels

ACROBATICS Sisters Ashleigh and Amanda Tropp continue to take the world of acrobatics by storm.

Ashleigh paired up with Sophie Ryan to take bronze in Prep A Ladies Pairs at the Inter-Regional Club Championship in Southampton.
Representing London in the 2009 British NDP Acrobatic finals in Stoke-on-Trent, Amanda and her partner Jessica Gordon-Brown came fourth. After winning the London Preliminaries in March, they competed in Grade 1 Ladies Pairs and performed a 2.5 minute routine, scoring 26.25 in a high-class field. They missed out on the bronze medal by 0.10.

Klinger in the A-team

Prolific batsman Michael Klinger has been selected to represent Australia A for the first time.

Klinger, 28, will play two four-day matches against Pakistan in July.

The selection comes shortly after the South Australian star won the 2009 State Player of the Year award after scoring more than 1,600 runs.

“My dream is to play Test cricket for Australia,” said Klinger. “But this is definitely a stepping stone to where I want to get to.”

Brilliant Brand reaches landmark

Maccabiah-bound Adam Brand has reached 12,000 runs for London Maccabi Vale. The right-handed batsman recently scored a century for the MCC.

LMV chairman Terry Hyman said: “It is a phenomenal achievement. Adam has shown such wonderful commitment to the club for such a long time and this is an example to all who play for the club.”

Richard Black (39) top-scored as LMV 1st beat Eastcote by six wickets in a friendly. Ryan Kangisser took 5-21 as LMV dismissed Eastcote for 138.

Cricket revolution a big hit with Israel kids

In the region of 100 children aged six and upwards, from Zichron Yaakov in the North, Be’er Sheva in the South, and central areas descended on Hadar Yosef Sports Stadium as the Israel Cricket Association launched their revamped development program.

The scheme will be spearheaded by former Belmont & Edgware all-rounder Herschel Gutman, who recently arrived in Israel to take up his position as national coach and development officer.

South destroy Bury

A brilliant all round team performance meant that South Manchester kept their title ambitions on track. Put into bat by Bury on a difficult batting wicket, South lost Rosenblum early, but that just brought Akiva Lieberman to the crease, who with Andrew Feldman, tore into the bowling attack.

No bowler was immune as Akiva Lieberman hit 10 fours and 3 sixes in his knock of 80. His dismissal just brought brother Dan Lieberman to the crease who continued where Akiva left off.

No go for Nomads

Casual Nomads were beaten in a friendly by Mill Hill Village. A stylish knock of 37 from Andy Finlay, playing his first game of the season, and a breezy 30 from Andy Landesberg saw Nomads post a competitive total. Despite a marvellous spell of controlled aggression with the ball which brought teenager Moshe Sulzbacher 4-36, Nomads could not remove the home side's hard-hitting opener who brought up his century in the penultimate over, leaving the visitors four wickets short of victory.

LMV up against it

A poor batting display led to London Maccabi Vale 2nd losing their third league match of the season in the Middlesex Sunday League Division Three.

Jonathan Lederman (33 not out) was the top-scorer as they were dismissed for 125 against Haryom. An excellent spell from Jeffrey Permutt proved in vain as Haryom won with several overs to spare.

Maccabiah-bound Adam Brand has reached 12,000 runs for LMV. The right-handed batsman recently scored a century for the MCC.
