Salford second after taking on Manchester Maccabi

Salford clinched the runners-up spot in the NJCL by the narrowest of margins after beating Manchester Maccabi.

A low-scoring contest saw Salford run out victors by 40 runs. They claimed 18 points to Maccabi's seven.

Batting first, Salford posted 146-8. Maccabi were skittled for 106.

The day's other match saw Leeds beat Bury & Whitefield by 10 wickets.

Leeds put Bury into bat on a damp slow wicket and were made to work for their wickets.

LMV 2nd edged out by Crouch End

London Maccabi Vale were beaten by 10 runs by Crouch End in a friendly.

Following heavy overnight rain the Crouch End wicket was hard but a little damp and LMV captain Jonathan Lederman had no hesitation in deciding to bowl first on winning the toss.

Excellent opening spells from both Simon Renshaw and Jonathan Freedman, who also managed to nip out a couple of batsmen, immediately put Crouch End on the back foot.

Newly promoted Middlesex Sunday League Division Three outfit MAL were beaten by 24 runs in a friendly against Octopus in Highgate.

Skipper Gav Lebens won the toss and chose to field, with the outfield long and the pitch a little damp. Michael Klinger and Mark Lazar bowled well with the new ball, Lazar picking up a wicket with his first ball, a fine caught and bowled to dismiss Lamplough.

Vale maintain winning run

Newly crowned Division Two champions London Maccabi Vale 1st maintained their unbeaten Middlesex Sunday League record after recording a 108-run victory over SKPP.

Sent in to bat, LMV made full use of the 40 overs with captain Adam Brand (71) continuing his purple patch. Opener Danny Caro (30) anchored the innings with Mark Bott blasting his way to an unbeaten 46.

The wicket did not improve in the second innings as SKPP were dismissed for 127. Saul Weitzman (4-22) was the pick of the bowlers with Ryan Kangisser claiming 3-44.

Palester retires

Ronnie Palester, one of the stalwarts of Jewish cricket, is retiring after more than 40 years of playing and involvement in administration.

Palester, 70, founded Belmont Synagogue CC, where over the years he captained all four XIs. He is the current manager of Barnet Synagogue CC and also serves as President of Belmont & Edgware.

A former wicketkeeper-batsman, Palester of Barnet retired five years ago. His best performance saw him claim four catches and three stumpings in one match.

New boys MAL secure promotion

MAL clinched promotion to Division Two of the Middlesex Sunday Cricket League with a clinical display against Belmont & Edgware 1sts.

BECC skipper Ashley Connick elected to bat on a damp and green track but the decision backfired when he was trapped plumb in front by an inswinger from Mark Landau. Josh Burke picked up the second wicket - producing a snorter that clipped the top of Warren Averbuch's off stump.

The NJCL Rep Team maintained their excellent record with a hard fought victory over Ladybridge.

On a warm and breezy day in Cheadle, skipper David Glick lost the toss and the NJCL were invited to bat on a soft, damp track.

With a strong batting line up NJCL opened with veteran Harry Rosenblum and Shaia Rabinowitz.

BECC 1sts well beaten

Belmont & Edgware 1st were unable to build on last week’s memorable cup victory as MAL ran out victors by eight wickets to confirm promotion from Middlesex Sunday League Division Three.

The match started rather more successfully than it ended for BECC who were decimated by injury and lack of availability. Captain Ashley Connick won the toss, a rare occurrence in recent months. Although wanting to bowl, having only seven players at the designated start time necessitated a bat.
