Maccabi crowned European champions

Shimon Peres led the tributes to Maccabi Tel Aviv Electra who overcame all the odds to claim their sixth Euroleague title.

A 98-86 victory over Real Madrid saw Maccabi send their 9,000 supporters into dreamland at the final four competition in Milan.

Maccabi eyes a final shot

Maccabi Tel Aviv will strive to recapture the glory days of the last decade in this weekend’s Euroleague basketball final-four in Milan.

The five-times European champions have not lifted the Euroleague crown since back-to-back triumphs in 2004 and 2005, and have not reached the final-four since 2011.

King Casspi shows true colours

Omri Casspi hit top form in the NBA, leading the Houston Rockets to a 119-98 victory against Sacramento Kings, his former club.

Houston marketed the match as ‘Israel Day’ in honour of Casspi who rose to the occasion, scoring a season-high 20 points. In the region of 450 Israelis attended the game, 3,000 Israeli flags were handed out and Casspi spoke about Israel at half-time.

Dinner to spearhead EMG basketball medal bid

Team Maccabi GB’s Basketball set-up for the European Maccabi Games 2015 has been announced.

Sport Chair Marc Dinner will be oversee the Management Team which includes coaches Tamir Grant, Craig Harris and Jason Rosenblatt. Team managers to be appointed at a later date.

de Hond was the true star

He gave an emotional account about how he went from a fit, happy-go-lucky youngster with a big sporting dream to rock bottom overnight following a spinal cord injury.

NBA stars in top form

Two of Israel’s leading stars took centre stage in the NBA when Omri Casspi and Gal Mekel went head to head in the second game of the season.

Houston Rockets star Casspi scored 12 points in the 113-105 win over Dallas Mavericks before limping off with a twisted ankle. Rookie Mekel contributed 11 points for the Mavericks.

Israel fires blanks at Eurobasket

Arik Shivek says Israel only have themselves to blame after they crashed out of Eurobasket 2013 following three defeats in four matches in Slovenia.

The Israel coach cut a dejected figure as his players lost 75-71 against Great Britain in overtime and their fate was sealed with a 80-76 defeat against Germany as they finished bottom of Group A.

Israel has made a poor start at Eurobasket 2013 - losing all three of their matches so far.

There was disappointment all round as Israel was beaten 75-71 by Great Britain in over-time. This was followed by a 74-67 defeat against Ukraine and then a 82-63 loss against France.

Mavericks in for Mekel

Gal Mekel is set to become only the second-ever Israeli to play in the NBA after reaching an agreement with the Dallas Mavericks.

The Maccabi Haifa point guard is said to have reached a verbal agreement with the Texan team and will sign a three-year contract worth $2.3 million on July 10 when the NBA equivalent of the transfer window opens.

Goodes in for GB’s Euro task

Guy Goodes has been appointed assistant-coach of the Great Britain basketball team.

His first task will be to prepare the squad for the Eurobasket 2013 European Championships in Slovenia, with Britain’s opening match against Israel on September 4.

Goodes has been working as assistant-coach at Maccabi Tel Aviv but says there are no split loyalties ahead of the game.
