Injured Solomon limps out

There was heartbreak for Australian sprinter Steve Solomon in Glasgow on Tuesday night as he limped out of the 400m semi-finals with what looked like a hamstring injury.

In only his second competitive race since recovering from a similar problem, the Stanford University student made a promising start in semi-final three, but he pulled up suddenly clutching his thigh.

Steve Solomon remains on course for Commonwealth Games gold after advancing to the second round of the Men's 400m in Glasgow.

The Australian national champion showed no signs of the injury which had hampered him in recent months, finishing his heat in 46:26 in his first serious competition since the national trials in April.

Siblings pass test of time

Sisters Maayan and Lia Radus were among the young Jewish athletes to improve their best performances in the Watford Open Graded Meeting series.

Maayan Radus, 10, recorded a 1,500m best of 5:33.88 to place third in the UK under-11 rankings, while Lia, 12, cut her respective 800m and 1,500m times to 2:31.10 and 5:10.98.

Davis raises bar at national schools meet

Eden Davis was one of four Jewish athletes to reach the finals of the English Schools Athletics Championships in Birmingham.

Representing Hertfordshire, Davis, 15, achieved the highest placing after battling a headwind to finish seventh in the Intermediate 100m in 11.11. His earlier two rounds had been faster, in more favourable wind conditions.

Lia Radus, 12, achieved a 1,500m season's best of 5:11.79 for victory in the Eastern Young Athletes League in Hendon, while her younger sister, Maayan, 10, recorded a PB of 5:42.39 over the distance at the same meeting.

Jessica Hurley, 16, set personal bests in both the 200m (27.98) and the 300m hurdles (50.48) in the Youth Development League in Eton.

Leinsky banned for six months

Olga Lenskiy has had her 100 meter record struck off the books and has been suspended for six months for failing to take a drugs test.

In April, Lenskiy ran 10om in 11.42 seconds clipping three hundreds of a second off the record set by Esther Roth in the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Bongart takes gold in Gateshead

James Bongart maintained top form with gold at the British Athletics League meeting in Gateshead.

Having recently taken the Essex under-20 title, Bongart, 17, showed that he is one of the country’s top young field event athletes with a personal best throw of 54.15m in the javelin.

The performance saw the Woodford Green and Essex competitor climb to 15th in the UK under-20 rankings.

Gold again for Edwards

Ellie Edwards, 17, showed sparkling form to take the Greater Manchester under-20 200m title in Macclesfield.

The Maccabiah Junior gold medallist broke the tape in a personal best time of 25.69.

A delighted Edwards said: "This is the best I have felt in three years in terms of my fitness. If I stay injury free I can have a great season."
