Silver lining for Barnett

Anna Barnett, 13, of Blackheath and Bromley AC, placed second in the hammer throw and third in the discus, with distances of 23.98m and 17.58m respectively, at the under-15 Kent County Championships.

Shaftesbury Barnet Harrier Jessica Hurley, 12, recorded a personal best of 2:33.31 in placing second in the 800m at the under-13 Hertfordshire County Championships.

Jennifer Simmons, 21, and Ellie Edwards, 15, braved rainy and blustery conditions to secure clear victories at the Greater Manchester Championships in Warrington.

Edwards, representing Trafford AC, drove off hard in the under-17 300m final, maintaining an early lead to finish in a personal best of 42.4 seconds.

Goodman’s dream ticket

Richard Goodman has secured a coveted athletic scholarship at the University of Oregon, and will take it up on Monday.

Oregon University is recognised as a centre of athletic excellence, and its head coach Vin Lananna was also head coach for Team USA at last year’s World Athletics Championships.

American-born Israeli Jillian Schwartz placed 11th in the pole vault at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul, recording a height of 4.45.

Roger Bruck, 72, won gold medals in three events at the Southern Counties Veterans Championships at Lea Valley indoor stadium.

Runner Shindler-Glass wins Middlesex title

March 8, 2012

Sam Shindler-Glass, 15, mastered a gruelling 6km course to win the Middlesex Schools under-17 title in Harrow.

Shindler-Glass said: "Four or five other races had already taken place that day so the course was churned up and muddy. I got into a pack of three at the front of the field, and with 200m to go put in a final spurt. Fortunately nobody was able to respond to it."

Schwartz qualifies

Pole vaulter Jillian Schwartz has qualified for the London Olympics.

Schwartz, who emigrated to Israel from America two years ago, cleared 4.52m to win the US Open indoor meet at Madison Square Garden, New York.

Sam Shindler-Glass, 15, came 23rd in the Under 17 Southern Cross Country Championships in Brighton.

Goodman edged out at Euros

Richard Goodman achieved possibly his greatest triumph so far by winning the silver medal in the European Junior Cross Country Championships in Velenje, Slovenia.

Goodman, 18, finished the 6km race two seconds behind Russian winner Ilgizar Safiulin, and with his performance he led Britain to victory in the team competition.

Richard Goodman secured his place in the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team with a well executed second place in the European Cross Country Trials at Sefton Park in Liverpool.

Goodman was at the front of the field throughout the 6.7 km race before Jonathan Hay made a final burst to secure a narrow victory.

"I'm very pleased with my performance," said Goodman.

Lane happy with bronze

Nathaniel Lane finished third at the Commonwealth Trail Ultra Distance Championships.

Lane covered the very challenging five-lap 53.7km course in 3:38.09. His performance at Newborough Forest in Anglesey helped Wales take the team gold.

Leading throughout most of the last 1,500m, Goodman was overtaken in the last 200m by Jonathan Hay and Zak Seddon, respectively the country's top young middle-distance runner and steeplechaser.

Confident Goodman on the up

Richard Goodman, 18, trimmed his 1,500m PB to 3:45.66 in the qualifying round at the Aviva Senior World Trials in Birmingham.

His performance demonstrated his renewed confidence and raised him to fourth in the UK Under 20 rankings for the distance.
