Finer wins

Israel's Hagar Shmoulefeld Finer successfully defended her Women's International Boxing Federation bantamweight title in France.

Shmoulefeld Finer, 26, from Tel Aviv took a split decision over Nadege Szikora at the Palais des sports Marcel Cerdan in Hauts-de-Seine.

After 10 closely contested rounds, two of the judges scored the fight 96-94 to Finer with the third favouring her opponent 96-95.

Finer's victory stretched her record to 22 wins, seven defeats and three draws from 32 fights since turning professional in 2002 at the age of 17.

Lucky 13 for Lions

London Maccabi Lions Under 13s came from two goals down to secure a place in the semi-finals of the Herts County Cup after running out 6-3 winners against Echoes Youth.

With Jason Grundman and Saul Kurer inspiring a comeback, it was Grundman who hauled them back into the tie with an excellent strike into the top corner.

Danny Schindler, the Lions manager, then made three changes bringing on Sam Belchak, Dylan Kaye and Kurer, all of whom had an immediate effect as Lions finished the half on top.

Harmen ease into last 16

A four-goal salvo from Ben Graham steered Southgate Harmen A into the last 16 of the Peter Morrison Trophy as they thumped FC Team B 8-2. Elliot Wallis (2), Grant Taylor and Adam Velleman completed the rout.

North West Neasden A came from behind to beat a depleted Redbridge Jewish Care C 3-2 in the JC Cyril Anekstein Cup. Lee Cash (2) and Rob Lerner saw them home.

Redbridge Jewish Care A remain three points clear at the top of the JC MSFL Premier Division following a 3-0 win over Neasden B. Steve Summers (2) and Lewis Walker registered.

Israel targets world tennis group

Israel will have high hopes of returning to the world group of the Federation Cup when many of the world's top ladies travel from the Australian Open to Eilat for the Europe/Africa Zone Group playoffs starting on Wednesday.

World number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark will lead a cast of 18 of the top 100 WTA players that includes Israel's Shahar Peer and Britain's Elena Baltacha.

Yossi Benayoun is on the mend

January 27, 2011

Carlo Ancelotti, the Chelsea boss, is confident that midfielder Yossi Benayoun will be back in action in March. The Israel captain is recovering from surgery on a torn Achilles.

Ancelotti said: "It's 14 weeks since Benayoun had surgery. I think he needs to have another six to eight weeks to fully recover. Everything is okay, he just needs more time."

Benayoun is looking to return in time for the Champions League quarter-finals, assuming Chelsea beats FC Copenhagen, and Israel's Euro 2012 qualifiers at the end of March.

David Pleat: I'm all for Spurs Olympic Stadium bid

David Pleat has backed Spurs in their bid to move to the Olympic Stadium in Stratford.

The former Tottenham boss commended the club for their "brave move" to challenge West Ham in the bidding process.

He believes the supporters are open to it, despite sporadic protests against the plans.

"If you did a straw poll of supporters you would be surprised. Most would not worry about going an extra five miles when they come from 20 to 30 miles away," he said.

Managers say total revamp is needed for MSFL

The Maccabi League is in need of a serious restructure, say some of its top managers who believe a complete overhaul is vital to make it more competitive and credible.

They have called for change after the Premier Division was cut to eight teams for the second consecutive season. This means that relegation from the top-flight appears unlikely and some teams are only four matches away from completing their league season.
