Israel still in Davis Cup contention

Israel's Davis Cup chances are hanging by a thread after they went into the final day of their tie against Chile 2-1 down.

Having lost the first two singles rubbers, Andy Ram and Jonathan Erlich gave Israel a lifeline by earning a thrilling five-set victory.

They fought back for a 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (11-9), 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 victory over Jorge Aguilar and Paul Capdeville.

The final two games are later this afternoon.

Ram said: "The six years experience that Yoni and I have playing together allowed us to remain cool even when we looked like we weren't in the picture.


Maccabi Lions Under 15s victory

London Maccabi Lions Under 15s continued their climb up the Watford Friendly League table with a 3-1 victory over Northwood.

Lions forged ahead when Adam Arnold slotted home a penalty. Zak Skry doubled the lead early in the second half after rising to head home a Danny Berschader corner.

Northwood pulled one back but Jamie Nagioff clinched the points.

Striker Jack Miller provided a brace of well-taken goals as the Lions Under Nine's move three points clear at the top after thumping Hemel Hempstead in the West Herts League.

I recently read that the league is 'in crisis' due to the demise of several teams this season. Nothing could be further from the truth. The purpose of the league is to provide football for the community and are here to serve the teams. In short we are here for the benefit of the teams and not the other way round.


Golden boy Goodman wins his own grand national

Cross Country
Richard Goodman gained the country's most prestigious trophy for his age group when he won the under 17 National Cross Country title in Leeds.

The Maccabiah double gold medallist was always in control at the front and pulled steadily away from his main rival Tom Curr in the second half of the 6,000m race to finish 200m clear.

This was Goodman's third entry into the championships, having come fifth in the Under 15 race two years ago and finishing runner-up at Under 17 last year.


Immanuel girls are Maccabi GB champs

Immanuel College girls enjoyed further success on the Maccabi GB circuit after claiming victory in respective badminton and table tennis events.

Each participant from the school walked away with a medal with Jennifer Murad and Alexandra Dangoor earning special praise after recovering from an 8-1 defeat to steal the game from Hasmonean Girls School, 21-18.

Sophie Cohen, Chloe Gordon and Hanna Baderman were also awarded Players of the Tournament by the other competitors for their sporting behaviour.

Pupils from Yavneh College and Hasmonean also won a table tennis gold.


Nissany joins Muecke Motorsport team

Roy Nissany has joined leading German team Muecke Motorsport. The Israeli, 15, son of Formula 1 test driver Chanoch, will be involved in a series of tests with the team at leading tracks including Monza, Hockenheim and Magny Cours, in order to get him ready to line-up for next season's European Formula BMW championship for the best young drivers in Europe.


Glenthorne United A maintain lead

Goals from Jason Levy (2) and Elliot Mullish helped Glenthorne United A maintain a two-point lead in Division One after beating Lions A 3-2. Adam Brand and Tim Levene replied.

Brady Maccabi A kept up their title challenge with a 4-2 success over South Mancunians. Laurence Myers penalty and strikes from Mark Wagman and Scott Ansher (2) were the scorers. Richard Smith and Mark Powell replied.


Faithfold nine-goal thriller against North London Raiders

Faithfold 5-4 North London Raiders

Faithfold player-coach James Bloom insisted Daryl Phillips is still "among the best finishers in Jewish football" after his four goals won a nine-goal thriller against North London Raiders.

Running the show in this Maccabi Masters Division One contest alongside his MSFL colleagues Zuriel Solomon and David Garson, Phillips' speed over five yards and opportunism proved too much for a Raiders team who until recently still harboured title ambitions.


Mesler wins bobsleigh Olympic gold

Steve Mesler savoured Winter Olympics ecstasy as he celebrated winning the four-man bobsleigh gold at Vancouver's Whistler Park.

Lining up alongside fellow crewmen Steve Holcomb, Justin Olsen and Curtis Tomasevicz, the 31-year-old from Buffalo overcame the German 1 team by 0.38 seconds over four rounds to ensure USA's first four-man bobsleigh gold in 62 years in a total time of 3: 24:36.


Cole names JC MSFL Rep team against Turkey

Jamie Cole, manager of the JC MSFL Rep team, has named a 21-man squad for next week's London Inter-League Cup opener against the Turkish Federation League.

Ahead of next Thursday evening's match at Brimsdown Rovers FC in Enfield, Cole said: "We've never beaten this team in this competition so there's a massive incentive for players."

Daniel Stanton has been named captain. London Maccabi Lions defender Louis Basger missed out on a place as he is unavailable. Brady Maccabi striker Paul Hakim, who is the only player from outside the Premier Division is doubtful due to injury.
