Maccabi prepares for new season

Manchester Maccabi are already planning for the new campaign with pre-season training starting on Sunday.

Former 2nd team managers Stuart Delmonte and Tony Rosenberg recently took charge of the club's first team and with the help of some former England, Manchester United, Manchester City and Blackburn Rovers players, they believe that they can help the club become the best in the community once more.

Having finished bottom of the Eccles League Premier Division last season, Delmonte and Rosenberg will lead Maccabi into the Thameside League Division One.

Shindler ready for new start at Fortune

Having helped North West Neasden A win a hat-trick of league and cup doubles, central defender Scott Shindler has moved to pasture new after dropping down two divisions to join Temple Fortune.

Shindler believes that his winning ethic can be a key factor and help Fortune bridge the gap after they finished sixth in Division Two.

Casspi NBA future uncertain

Jordan Farmar played what could be his last game for the Los Angeles Lakers as they took their second successive NBA title with a 83-79 win over the Boston Celtics.

Farmar scored 21 points in the thrilling seven-game series, which the Lakers won 4-3, playing an average 17 minutes a game. He scored two points in the final game.

Although the 23-year-old guard has completed his fourth season with the Lakers, Farmar still seems far short of being able to replace first choice guard Derek Fisher, who turns 36 in August and is close to retirement.

Saperstein lines up British title challenge

Laura Saperstein is targeting a crack at the British featherweight title after defeating Bulgarian Borislava Goranova at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

Saperstein had been frustrated after several opponents dropped out but she had no problems extending her unbeaten professional record to 10 after the six round contest.

"I started preparing for someone a lot taller and heavier followed by someone lighter and shorter," said Saperstein. "For once, I'd been struggling with my weight and in the end it became really stressful."

Feilhaber steers USA into round two

Benny Feilhaber helped the USA keep their World Cup dream alive after coming off the bench to steer them past Algeria and finish top of England’s qualifying group.

A strike from Jermaine Defoe looked to have sent England through as group winners, but playmaker Feilhaber, who came on at half time after replacing striker Herculez Gomezat the Loftus Versfeld Stadium, and played his part as a stoppage time strike from Landon Donovan took the USA through to the second round in South Africa.

Feilhaber said: "It’s unbelievable. We definitely never doubted it was possible.

Peer crashes out in round two

Shahar Peer suffered a shock second round elimination at the hands of Angelique Kerber on Wednesday afternoon.

Having accounted for former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic in the opening round, the 13th seed from Israel succumbed in straight sets against the German on Court 5.

Sela goes down fighting against 13th seed

Israel No. 1 Dudi Sela was unable to repeat his heroics of 2009 after going down in four sets against 13th seed Mikhail Youzhny on Court 8 on day two at Wimbledon.

Having reached round four and ousting former top 10 player Marat Safin last year, a resilient Sela gave the powerful Russian a run for his money.

He lost the first two sets before battling back to win the third. The baseliner failed to capitalise on two sets points in the fourth before eventually losing the tie-break, going down 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7 (2-7).

Hapoel drawn against Bosnians in Champions League

Hapoel Tel Aviv have been drawn against Bosnian champions FK Zeljeznicar in the second qualifying round of the Champions League.

The Israeli champions will host the Bosnians at Bloomfield Stadium on July 14 and travel to Sarajevo for the return a week later.

Itay Shechter, the Hapoel striker, said: “We do not really know the team but if they are champions of Bosnia they cannot be taken lightly."

LMV unstoppable

London Maccabi Vale 2nd returned to winning ways as they put Belmont & Edgware 1st to the sword, winning by six wickets in the Middlesex Sunday League Division Three.

BECC went into the game on the back of a defeat against MAL, and they were unable to stop LMV in their second tight finish in a week at the Met Police Ground in Bushey. BECC skipper Ashley Connick won the toss and elected to bat first. His side got off to a strong start with an opening partnership of 60 between Alex Goodman, who went on to make 63, and Dan Abrahams.

Peer eases into round two at Wimbledon

Shahar Peer's quest to reach the ATP top 10 gathered momentum as she beat former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic on Court 5 late on Monday evening on Day One at Wimbledon.

Seeded 13, Peer was forced to wait for a court but it did not affect her performance and she prevented Ivanovic from showing the form that took her to the semi-finals at SW19 in 2007.

The Israeli Peer capitalised with a solid if unspectacular performance that earned a 6-3 6-4 passage.
