JCC Games update

Having won an early gold in the boys team table tennis competition, Team GB have continued to take silverware in San Francisco.

There was success in the track and field with Zac Skry winning a gold in the Mixed Relay followed by silver in the Long Jump.

Simon Zeffertt won a silver medal for the Mixed Relay.

Israeli clubs progress in Europa Cup

Hapoel Tel Aviv and Bnei Yehuda reached the playoff stage of the Europa Cup after coming through respective third qualifying round ties on Thursday.

Leading 3-1 from the away leg against IFK Gothenberg, Hapoel drew 1-1 at the Bloomfield Stadium.

Israeli international Michael Zandberg put Hapoel ahead in the 14th minute. Hannes Stiller hauled the Swedes level on the night but the two-time Uefa Cup winners never threatened to overhaul Hapoel’s aggregate lead.

GB stars sparkle on world stage

It was not just the footballers, rugby team, track and field athletes and squash players who put in medal winning performances for Team GB at the Maccabiah Games.

Led by Robin Ashleigh, Britain’s table tennis delegation brought home two bronze medals in an event featuring several world ranked players.

Ashley Stokes, Dov Katz, Adam Laws and Keith Lesser came up trumps in the Open Team event while Adam Black and Ian Mablin finished third in the Masters Team competition.

Israel name squad for UK trip

Israel manager Dror Kashtan has named a 24-man squad for a summer training camp ahead of next week’s friendly international against Northern Ireland in Belfast.

Arriving in the UK on Friday, Hapoel Tel Aviv striker Itay Schechter, who was in the starting line-up for Israel's last game against Greece, has been omitted.

The squad includes Israel's Premier League stars, captain Yossi Benayoun, Tamir Cohen and Tal Ben Haim, who has returned to Man. City after a loan spell with Sunderland.

Under Mark Berman, manager Emeritus of the Men’s National Fastpitch Team and Chairman of Selectors, Great Britain has improved its world ranking to eight and become the top-ranked nation in Europe.

The team reached the playoffs at the 2009 ISF World Championships in Saskatoon, Canada last month, beating perennial power Japan on the way.

Lee plays them off the Park

Lee Park and Potters Bar added silverware to their trophy cabinets following two major competitions staged by the Association of Jewish Golf Clubs & Societies.

Liverpool-based Park won the main prize in the Provincial Trophy competition. The host club lifted the Gerry Tankel trophy for the best four out of six aggregate net scores. They finished on 287 with runners-up Bonnyton chasing them home with 290.

King of the swingers

Potters Bar member Paul Coburn completed a memorable month by following up his performance at the Glancy with another strong showing a the Junior National competition.

At the Glancy, Coburn obliterated the field to win both the individual trophies — the lowest gross score and the lowest net score — and helped his team to win its biggest haul of trophies since 1955.

His win had the organisers scrambling for the record books, and as far as anyone can establish, he is the youngest individual winner of the lowest gross score trophy and highest handicapped player ever to win it.

GB starlet Scott on the move

Team GB footballer Scott Shulton is joining Blue Square Premier Ebbsfleet United.

A star of the recently concluded Maccabiah Games, Shulton, 19, was set to sign a one-year contract yesterday, after being released by Wycombe Wanderers. He was at Wycombe for seven years following a two-year spell at Watford.

Shulton said: “I see it as a step across rather than down as I will have more of a chance to get regular first-team action. I wanted to stay in full-time football and want to keep improving every day.

A team featuring Daniel Cohen, Joshua Dobias and Yoni Smith won the boy’s table tennis event with Smith

following in the footsteps of his uncle, Maccabiah star Dov Katz, finishing first in their group.

Wingate two good for Hendon

Wingate & Finchley defeated neighbours Hendon 2-0 in a pre-season on Tuesday night.

Hendon dominated the early stages without actually creating any chances, but it was Wingate & Finchley who took the lead with a fantastic goal. Good work from Ola Williams allowed Leon Nelson to turn and shoot into the left corner.

Hendon's best chance came through a header from James Bent. Towards the end of the half they resorted to a few long range shots although they all failed to hit the target, the best effort coming from Kevin Maclaren.
