Stolerman double helps MSFL team beat Turks

Two goals from Adam Stolerman plus one from Jonathan Ellis helped the JC MSFL Rep Team make a flying start in the London Inter-League Cup after beating highly-fancied Turkish Federation League A 3-1 at Brimsdown Rovers on Wednesday night.

The Maccabi boys made their intentions clear from kick-off, winning a corner inside the first 10 seconds. Their bold tactics paid dividends almost immediately as Stolerman latched on to a clever pass from Adam Levene to lob the keeper with the ball going in off the underside of the bar inside two minutes.

Nyman keeps London Lions in title contention

A Dean Nyman double helped London Lions boost their title hopes after beating Mill End Sports 2-1 in the Herts Senior County League Premier Division.

The Lions kept pressure on the top two by edging a tight contest to record their seventh away victory of the season. A tight contest in relation to the score but in truth Lions should have been out of sight with the chances created and not converted.

Hull City approach Avram Grant

Portsmouth manager Avram Grant has been approached to take over at Hull City, according to reports.

The Tigers are searching for a new manager after parting company with Phil Brown yesterday.

The Israeli has previously stated that he is committed to his role with the troubled South Coast club.

Last night, Portsmouth lost 4-1 against Liverpool but they are still in the FA Cup, awaiting the winner of the Fulham/Spurs replay.

Peer reaches round 4 at Indian Wells

Shahar Peer is through to the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells after beating ninth seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy 6-4, 6-7, 6-1.

The Israeli, seeded 17 in the competition will play world No. 9 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia late tonight for a place in the quarter-finals.

In the men’s doubles, Andy Ram and Michael Llodra are into the quarter finals after the Serbian duo of Viktor Troicki and Janko Tipsarevic withdrew from their second round match.

Winston named Team GB manager for EMG

Ben Winston will manage the Team GB Open football team at next year’s European Maccabi Games in Vienna.

Winston was assistant-manager to Jonathan Kestenbaum at last year’s Maccabiah Games, where the team took silver after losing to Argentina on penalties in the final.

Ben is the current assistant-manager at Wingate & Finchley. He was also part of the bronze-winning Open Football management team at the 2007 EMG in Rome.

Dudi Sela returns to form in Indian Wells

Dudi Sela returned to form with a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 victory over 14th seed Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic in the second round of the BNP Paribas Open Masters at Indian Wells.

The win set up a third round match against 18th seed Tommy Robredo of Argentina who the Israeli beat in the third round at Wimbledon last year.

In the first round in Indian Wells, Sela beat Jesse Levine 6-2, 6-2. This is easily Sela's best performance in 2010. The Israeli's slump in form prior to this week saw him slip down to 72 in the ATP rankings from a high of 29 last summer.

FC Team make it nine unbeaten

FC Team took their unbeaten run in all competitions to nine games with a solid Middlesex County League Division One win over Arsenal Deaf at the Walkers Ground in Southgate.

Coming off the back of a 2-2 draw with Wilberforce last week, Team were itching for another three points and the afternoon could not have got off to a better start after five minutes Kieran Allen Curry took a brilliant free kick from the left hand side of the box that was met with a firm header by midfielder Jon Breger to head home past the keeper.

Katz and Stokes steer Brighton to British League playoff

Brighton have won the British League Division One after beating nearest rivals Fusion by a single games average having finished level on points.

The champions now face a playoff in May with teams from the north of England to qualify for the Premiership.

Maccabiah medallist Dov Katz captained the side which included Maccabiah men’s singles quarter-finalist Ashley Stokes and former England international Cris Sladden.

Daniel Field wins Maccabi Sportsman of 2010

Daniel Field is the Pentland Senior Sportsperson of the Year.

The England international blind cricketer held off a top-class field including Oldham Athletic footballers Joe Jacobson and Dean Furman to lift the title in Finchley on Sunday night.

The wicket-keeper/batsman was a popular choice after hitting a century in the 5th one-day international against Australia.

Cross country prodigy Richard Goodman won the JC Young Sportsman of the Year.

The Team GB Over 45 Masters won UJIA Team of the Year.

MSFL's South Manx saved by ex-player

An eleventh-hour reprieve prevented the MSFL from losing another team after Premier Division South Manx were taken over by Craig Edwards.

Following an embarrassing 12-2 mauling by first division Oakwood in the JC Cyril Anekstein Cup, Manx manager John Nitka resigned and it appeared that the team would become the sixth to fold this season.

Developments took a twist overnight when former player Craig Edwards agreed to return to the club and take charge. Edwards said: “I will bring in some new players this week and we will stick it out for the last few games and rebuild.”
