Liverpool inspired by three-goal Benayoun

Israel captain Yossi Benayoun has been reflecting on his first Premier League hat-trick for Liverpool which inspired the Reds to a 4-0 victory over Burnley at Anfield.

Benayoun, 29, bounced back from Israel's World Cup qualifying woes to score his third hat-trick in a Liverpool shirt.

The midfielder opened the scoring in the first half after cutting inside Graham Alexander and sliding a shot across keeper Brian Jensen.

He was involved in the second as well. Following a swift counter-attack, Benayoun's shot proved too hot for Jensen, allowing Dirk Kuyt to slotted in the loose ball.

A stunning last-minute penalty save from Redbridge keeper Richard Stern ensured the East Londoners made a winning start after a seven-goal thriller at South Oxhey.

Stern's full-length save rubber-stamped victory in a game the visitors led four times.

Having won their opening fixture against Red Sea the previous week, Montana went into the game in confident mood. That said, their hopes were not helped by the absence of Raymond Harrod, Simon Peterman, Adam Osper, Trevor Henen, Simon Wax, James Tarlton and Simon Hecker.

Israeli wins world windsurfing silver

Nimrod Mashiah won silver at the windsurfing World Championship in Weymouth.

Mashian, 21, is the fourth Israeli to win at medal at the championships, following in the footsteps of Amit Inbar, Gal Fridman and Shahar Zubari.

Competing on the same course that will be used for the 2012 Olympics, Mashian said: “It still hasn't sunk in.

Zubari, who was also competing finished 13th.

Ram loses in US Open semis

Andy Ram and Max Mirnyi missed out on a place in a grand slam final as they were beaten at the last four stage at Flushing Meadows.

Seeded five, the pair lost 6-4, 6-2 by third seeds Mark Knowles and Mahesh Bhupathi, in a match lasting 76 minutes.

Israel ousted at Eurobasket

Israel capped A disappointing EuroBasket campaign with a third straight defeat, going down 106-80 defeat to Greece in Poznan, Poland. This followed losses against Croatia and Macedonia.

The Greece result completed a disastrous three days in Poland and means that for the first time in 25 European Championship appearances, it has finished a tournament without a victory.

“I knew this would be a difficult championship, but I expected us to play better,” said coach Tzvika Sherf. “We should have beaten both Croatia and Macedonia, but we failed when it mattered most."

Israeli clubs ready to tackle Euro giants

Israeli fans are looking forward to a festival of European club football next week as Bayern Munich and Celtic visit the country.

Maccabi Haifa host the Germans at Ramat Gan on Tuesday in the first round of matches in Champions League Group A. Two days later, Celtic visit the Bloomfield Stadium to play Hapoel Tel Aviv in the inaugural game of the Europa Cup group stage.

The opening weekend of the Maccabi Masters Football League saw victories for Glenthorne United A, North London Raiders and Glenthorne United B.

Sid Shaw (2), Adam Lennard and Jason Levy earned Glenthorne A a 4-2 win over Faithfold in Division One. Joel Nathan (2) replied.

North London Raiders beat London Maccabi Lions A 3-2 courtesy of goals from Richard Sacks, Paul Herszaft and Spencer Steinberg. Roger Sugarman and Darren Dryer replied.

Neil Richards and Danny Sellar steered Glenthorne B to a 2-1 success over Temple Fortune. Phil Bloomberg replied.

Matt finish for Lions

A Matt Stock double and one from Daniel Levenfiche gave London Lions a 3-1 win over Hertford Heath to send them clear at the top of the Herts Senior County League Premier Division.

Stock opened the scoring after 16 seconds as Lions made it 16 from 18 points. He added the second with a neat finish from an Adam Stolerman assist.

Hertford pulled one back but Daniel Levenfiche clinched the points with a tap-in 15 minutes from time.

Gridiron stars show no sign of flagging

The Israeli American football teams take the field in Belfast this weekend, in an international tournament that will see the three top countries win through to the World championships in Canada in 2010.

Playing the non-contact version of the game, known as Flag football, the Israelis are serious contenders. The women’s side topped a major international tournament played outside Frankfort earlier this year.

Faithfold’s Zuriel Solomon tore into his troops after a disastrous start to the season against a rampant Hendon team.

The player-manager blasted his wasteful strikers, as they were swept aside by last season’s League Cup winners.

Bemoaning his side’s lack of cutting edge, Solomon said: “It was disappointing up front. We couldn’t hit a barn door with the way we finished out there.”
