Maccabi win Vets Challenge Trophy

Manchester Maccabi triumph in first ever Vets Challenge winning over a valiant South Manchester Sports Club at Brooklands.

Captain Sheldon Lee received the Nat Bowman Trophy from local MP Ivan Lewis as Maccabi won 4-2.

Keith Herman opened the scoring for South with a superb 20-yard volley from a free kick after just five minutes.

Maccabi GB Open Futsal manager Johnny Cohen heralded the inaugural MIFT as a huge success.

The event, which was jointly sponsored by the Maccabi GB Open Age and Masters Futsal Teams competing at the EMG this summer, consisted of five teams.

LMV Under 17s outgunned

London Maccabi Vale Under 17s were beaten by their counterparts from Winchmore Hill by seven wickets.

LMV chose to bat first and right from the start were put under pressure by a very accurate bowling attack well supported in the field. Despite the best efforts of the more experienced players only Ben Lederman (23n.o.) and Mark Spanjar (16) managed to get into double figures.

So the season starts at an unbelievably warm Rowley Lane. The pitch looks very green but quite firm and the outfield is drier than LMV have ever seen at this time of the year.

Lions reserves in seventh heaven

London Lions Reserves rounded off their Spartans Midland Reserve League Division Two campaign in impressive style, with a 7-2 victory against Tring Corinthians.

A much-changed side saw Declan Green make a season's debut in goal, with starts given to the returning Craig Ellis in midfield and to Harry Franks, fresh from securing a scholarship to study/ply his soccer skills in the US.

Lions frustrated with a draw

London Lions ended the season as they had began it - with a draw. Playing Sun Postal Sports, the Lions were down to the bare bones on a hot day and playing on a rock solid pitch, both sides went for the win but nether could find that elusive goal.

Lions have adapted well to life in their new surroundings with the draw ensuring a top half finish a feat the club can be very proud of.

Salford suffer narrow defeat

Salford Jewish CC suffered a dramatic defeat in their first game of the season, and they only had themselves to blame.

Too many wides, dropped catches and some sloppy fielding cost them dear.

Wilmslow chose to bat and openers Rowe (66) and Metzalaar (22) made steady progress on the good backing track.
