Lions manager cautious about chances

Having lifted the Herts Senior County League Premier Division title, London Lions go into known territory when they travel to Bedford for their first ever match in the Spartan South Midlands League Division One tomorrow.

Unlike last season, preparations have not been hampered by the Maccabiah Games although manager Tony Gold remains cautious about their chances.

Having relocated to Broxbourne Borough V&E FC, it is clear that the Lions will have to up the ante. They lost only two games last season on their way to pipping Wormley Rovers at the post.

Man City interest in Barca's Assulin

Gai Assulin is reportedly having trials at Manchester City this week.

The 19-year-old Israeli was released by Barcelona last month after several years of poor form and injuries saw him fall out of favour at Camp Nou, where he failed to make the first team after becoming the youngest ever player to represent Israel at 16.

Assulin will have his work cut out to convince City boss Roberto Mancini to bring him to Eastlands. He recently failed to show up for a trial offered to him by Blackburn Rovers.

Sahar raises Hapoel's Champions League chance

Former Chelsea star Ben Sahar scored his first goal for Hapoel Tel Aviv at Bloomfield Stadium on Tuesday night as the Israelis beat Aktobe 3-1 (3-2 on aggregate) to move into the Champions League play-offs.

Seeded in the strong half of today's (Friday) draw, Hapoel have an excellent chance of reaching the Group Stage for the first time ever.

Hapoel striker Itay Shechter said, "I'm dreaming of the Champions League anthem and finding myself one-on-one against keepers like Casillas and Valdes."

Newlands & Northwood scare against Chigwell

Newlands & Northwood accumulated 194 from their 35 overs against Chigwell, including a fine 43 from Ben Wolpe.

They seemed set for a comprehensive victory as Chigwell slumped to 11-7, but were given a scare as Mike Myers and Kevin Sinclair put on a century partnership. However, Chigwell ended up 61 runs short.

Among other friendlies on Sunday, Belmont & Edgware 1sts (135-8) went down by three wickets to Olympians.

Strong start for Israel basketball

Israel's qualification campaign for Eurobasket 2011 got off to a strong start with a 79-71 away victory over group favourites Italy in Bari.

Yotam Halperin topscored with 16 points as the Israelis opened up a large lead by the second quarter.

The victory was all the more impressive because NBA star Omri Casspi failed to shine with only nine points to his name.

Lustigman named as Maccabi GB Futsal manager

Adam Lustigman has been named manager and Paul Shamplina player/coach of the Maccabi GB Futsal side for next summer's European Maccabi Games in Vienna.

Lustigman has coached and managed teams at Faithfold for 20 years, and set up the current Faithfold Masters team. He now coaches for Excel and London Lions.

"I'm very excited to be managing at my first Games,' he said. "We expect the competition for places to be very strong and hope to bring some medals home with us."

Lightning triumph at Manchester tournament

South Lightning beat a Barbarians side by 33 wickets to win the NJCL Super Sixes tournament in Manchester on Sunday.

The sides met in the final after finishing in the top two places of a league also featuring teams from Bury and Leeds.

The Barbarians, comprising players from several clubs, had no answer to the superb batting prowess of South's Jonny Lieberman, who was undefeated on 27, and captain Steve Glicher, who retired on 31 off just 12 balls.

Danielle’s jump start in Barcelona

Danielle Frenkel, 22, set a new women's high jump record for Israel in its debut at the European Athletics Championship in Barcelona

She cleared the bar at 1.92m in the qualifying round advancing her to the final where she managed to clear only 1.85m followed by three failed attempts at 1.89m, handing victory to Croatia's Blanka Vlasic, reaching 2.03m.

Frenkel remains optimistic and happy with her overall performance, despite not being victorious in the finals and finishing 12th and last place.

Europa League round-up

A first half strike from Vladimer Dvalishvili steered Maccabi Haifa past Dinamo Minsk in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

Maccabi Tel Aviv scored a crucial away goal in a 2-1 defeat against Olympiacos.

Haris Medunjanin gave the Israelis a shock 18th minute lead but the Greeks struck back with goals midway through the second half from Dennis Rommedahl and sub Jaouad Zairi turnings things around.

Both return legs are on August 5.

South land NJCL hat-trick

South Manchester Maccabi retained the NJCL crown for the third consecutive season after easing to a nine-wicket victory in the title-decider against Manchester Maccabi.

Fresh from their victory at the NJCL Twenty20 last week, South skipper Steven Glicher had no hesitation in putting Maccabi into bat.

The decision paid dividends as Maccabi had no answer to the pace of Akiva Lieberman (3-11) and the guile of David Glick (4-13).
