Issy Bernstein in bid to buy Betar Jerusalem

A London-based property millionaire is in negotiations to buy Israeli champions Betar Jerusalem, the JC understands.

Issy Bernstein, 77, flew to Moscow last week to meet Betar owner Arkady Gaydamak and has since instructed his lawyers in Israel to conduct due diligence examination of the club’s books.

(Latics) Oldham Athletic cancel Israel trip

LEAGUE 1

Oldham Athletic have cancelled their pre-season trip to Israel, the JC can reveal.

As reported in October, the club had arranged friendlies against Maccabi Haifa, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Betar Jerusalem in July but the Israeli teams scuppered the trip as it would clash with the preliminary rounds of the Uefa Cup and training camps.

Oldham have been unable to arrange suitably meaningful matches as part of the programme and postponed the trip indefinitely.

Gold stars for Halter

Camden Swiss Cottage member Susan Halter beat two men en route to silverware at the Swim South East Masters Long Course competition.

Competing in the 80-84 year age category, Halter, the only 81-year-old at the event, beat a 76-year-old male in the 100 metres freestyle and an 80-year-old in the 20o metres backstroke mixed sex race.

Halter took gold in five events – the 50, 100 and 200 metres backstroke and 10 and 100 metres front crawl.

Wingate & Finchley manager Michael Stone was delighted with the character shown by his team as the blues maintained their playoff push with a hard-earned draw against fellow high-flyers East Thurrock United.

“I thought we had a great start and in the first 25 minutes caused East Thurrock all sorts of problems. We scored one during this period and if we had added another I really feel that it would have been difficult for them to come back.”

Yavneh and Hasmo fill their baskets with gold

Yavneh College and Hasmonean took the honours at Maccabi GB’s secondary girls school’s basketball tournament in Kenton, North West London.

Split into two age categories, the first Jewish schools tournament of 2009 featured teams from four schools.

Yavneh and Hasmonean were evenly matched in the years eight and nine competition with Hasmonean winning by virtue of scoring one extra basket. JFS finished third.

Perfect 10

HIS Hendon United Under 14s made it 10 out of 10 with a 4-2 win over Stonegrove Park. The league leaders saw off their nearest rivals courtesy of strikes from Daniel Goodman (2), Mordi Weiler and Joseph Gourgey. Adam Gold and Daniel Kuber netted for Stonegrove.

Alyth Belsize condemned Hendon Hawks to their eighth defeat in nine matches with a 5-3 victory.

Goals from Noah Bier and Dan Cohen helped AC Whetstone maintain their grip on third spot in the Under 12 Division with a 2-1 victory over Hendon Hawks.

Faithfold master the Lions in the cup

In the Henry Swerner Maccabi Masters League Cup, sponsored by Tux’n’Tails, the big shock was provided by Faithfold, who raced into an early 3-0 lead against London Maccabi Lions A, then found themselves 5-3 down by half-time. They eventually clawed it back to 5-5 by the end of normal time, and won 4-2 on penalties.

United win

Hendon Interschools Hendon United A (HISHU A) won the Maccabi Primary League indoor Under 11 five-a-side competition without conceding a goal.

They saw off the challenge of 10 other teams and clinched a place in the final with a 5-0 win over Hendon Hawks. They beat Alyth Belsize B in by the same scoreline in the final.

Hendon Hawks A Tigers beat Hendon Hawks Bears B in an Under Nine Division double-header where Joel Gottlieb was the star of the show.
